10 Awesome Country Covers: Tom Petty Edition

It’s a well documented and quoted fact that the late Tom Petty had some issues with modern country music – but there is no denying the love that modern country artists have for him and the impact he made on them. If you need proof, have a listen to this list of Tom Petty country covers.

Solo stars, groups, men, women, legends and upstarts are all here. Every one of them inspired by the songs that Petty wrote, sang, and gave to the world.

There are more out there, with varying video quality, and some songs, like Free Fallin’, just have too many versions to fall in love with.

If you know of a country cover of a Tom Petty song that you think we should hear, please leave a comment with a link.

And if you have a favourite from this list, let us know which it is.

Rest in peace Mr. Petty. Thank you for the music.

Ripcord: Keith Urban at Boots & Hearts 2017

After weather threatened the headlining entertainment on Friday night at Boots & Hearts 2017, the lightning cleared and Keith Urban took over the main stage, and he killed it!

The guitar slinging Aussie didn’t waste a minute in his set, revving up the energy with Long Hot Summer to start the show, and pushing forward through a series of hits, fan favourites, and guest appearances. And while the thunder and lightning did clear, the crowd, and Urban himself fought through two rain showers during the show… but it didn’t slow anyone down.

He was soaked by the end of his Boots & Hearts debut, but it didn’t matter and it didn’t look like he cared. In the rain and in the clear, Keith Urban showed off his guitar chops, lead call and answer games, invited us all to sing along with him and for him, and entertained the hell out of the tens of thousands of country music fans that rushed back to the stage after their evacuation had been lifted.

“Rain ain’t nothing but a thang” – Keith Urban, Boots & Hearts 2017

Keith Urban was the star of the show on Friday night, but credit should be given to (and was given by the star) to the fans who waited out an evacuation of more than an hour, and stood in the rain during his set – but still sang along as loud as they could, cheered at the top of their lungs, and loved the hell out of the man on stage.

As music fans ourselves, this show and this night were special. The energy level was as high as we’ve ever felt it, and the appreciation for the music when there was a feeling that it may not happen at all, was at an all time high.

Big love has to also go out to Keith Urban’s band who pushed through the weather conditions – and to Dan + Shay and Brooke Eden who did great jobs in their guest spots on stage. There were no slips in the performance, sound, or talent in this show. It was tight, top notch, and everything that we could have hoped for… regardless of the weather.

Keith Urban was worth the wait, and the wetness. He was charming, emotional, energetic, and willing to do everything he could to entertain his fans. He gave away a guitar, put on a shirt and hat that were thrown to him from the crowd, and stood on stage in the rain to play, just like his fans stood in the rain to see him play.

If you love live music, if you love country music, if you love Keith Urban’s music – go see a live show. Even if it’s raining.

Boots & Hearts 2017 Weather Forecast!

With Boots & Hearts 2017 coming up this week… it’s time to seriously get started on the planning and packing. And if you’re going to start doing those things without checking the weather – you’re asking for trouble.

So, before you start deciding what to wear to Boots & Hearts, we suggest checking the forecast for Oro-Medonte and what it might be doing when Doc Walker, Keith Urban, Brantley Gilbert, and Luke Bryan headline Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights.

Sadly, it looks like rain may be in the cards – which we should probably have expected since it’s darn near a B&H tradition. But, that doesn’t mean we can’t have a lot of fun. With temperatures that will still hit the 20s, and humidity part of the equation, shorts and tanks and tees will still be the order of the day. With rubber boots, ponchos, and hoodies a smart addition to any wardrobe.

Stay up to date on the Boots & Hearts/ Oro-Medonte weather forecast as we get closer to the festival by Clicking Here as Thursday approaches.

Boots & Hearts is coming, and it’s easy to tell you it’s one of our favourite weekends of the summer. It’s also easy to tell you that we’re excited to see Alee and Andrew Hyatt hit the stage to sing their songs.

These two Wax Records artists are coming to B&H to show the country music crowd what they have to offer… and if you haven’t seen them before, you’re in for a treat. And, if you have seen them, you know why you want to be there at the front of the stage to see each of their sets.

To get us all ready, we hooked up with Alee and Andrew for a little pre-festival Q&A action. We’d like to thank them both for their honesty, humour and use of emojis.

Q: What three words would you use to describe the feeling of getting up on a big stage in front of a bunch of rowdy country music fans?

Alee: Adrenaline-rush
Exhilarating
Wing-ding

Andrew: Hot and Heavy 🙂

Alee: Been a huge Eli Young Band since I was in junior high… so excited to finally see them live!!… but I mean, also, Brett Eldredge… 😍

Andrew: Keith Urban is definitely always a great show. Definitely looking forward to seeing as many of the acts as possible!

Q: How has the reception of your new music been with crowds so far in 2017?

Alee: Honestly, could not ask for more love from the fans! It has been pretty amazing to see social media posts with lyrics, or little messages about what certain songs mean to them… and it’s always magical to see them singing along at shows! I’m pretty blessed!

Andrew: It’s been amazing to see such a positive response to the current single and the record! It’s what drives me to keep going!

Kris Barclay and More at the 2017 Brooklin Spring Fair

The summer season in a lot of small town starts when the fair rolls through town, and last weekend we got things kicked off for ourselves in Brooklin.

The Brooklin Spring Fair had everything you’d expect to see, carnival rides that were trucked in and set up on the midway, kids laughing and screaming and lined up for their turn on the scrambler and the ferris wheel and more.

We saw dudes trying to win prizes for their dates, and we saw women winning prizes for themselves, and we saw a whole lot of people losing money…

And we saw Kris Barclay on stage doing his thing and facilitating a summer country music party outside of the beer tent!

Barclay, the recently announced host of the 2017 Havelock Country Jamboree, had to wait for the noise to die down after the nearby demolition derby before he and his band could turn on the sound – and when the wait was over, the music started.

The crowd assembled in waves as some folks came from the beer line with their hands newly full of cold ones, some people came from the midway after having their stomachs turned enough on the rides, and some came from the metal bleachers that had stared at the smashing cars in the hours before.

Barclay and the boys wasted no time getting the party going with a super strong half dozen covers…

☆ Anywhere With You – Jake Owen
☆ Springsteen – Eric Church
☆ Beer In Mexico – Kenny Chesney
☆ Buy Me A Boat – Chris Janson
☆ Who Wouldn’t Wanna Be Me – Keith Urban
☆ Boot Scootin’ Boogie – Brooks & Dunn

And the band played on from there as people sang along, danced in the grass and dirt, and drank their Saturday night, spring-turning-into-summer beers, and let the night wash over them.

And because we were at the fair, and the small town in us loves the show, check out some pics from the Demolition Derby – including an adorable shot of some little ones being ferocious but safe in their big wheels.

Please Welcome to the Stage… Boots & Hearts 2017 Predictions!

We’re just under 9 months away from Boots & Hearts 2017 at Burl’s Creek in Oro, ON – but it really doesn’t feel like that long at all!

In fact, we’ve already been thinking about B&H a lot, and while we can’t give you many details yet, we can tell you that we’re going to have some very, very exciting things coming up between now and festival season next year.

But for now we want to talk about the potential lineup for the 6th annual country music extravaganza… we don’t have any info that you don’t have. We haven’t talked to the Republic Live team for any tips or rumours. But I have come up with a list of 10 country artists that I think have a legit chance to play at Boots & Hearts next August.

This isn’t an old fashioned wish list, which is why you won’t see names like Garth Brooks, Shania, Reba, or Brooks & Dunn… although it would be really cool if any of those artists headlined. This list is made up of talent that we’ve either seen in the past and believe are a good fit for a return next year, or that we haven’t seen yet, and have a good reason to play such a sweet gig.

This wasn’t an easy list of 10 to make, which is why there are a few names at the bottom that could also be at B&H in 2017. And, I want you list too, so leave a comment!

In no particular order, here we go…

Doc Walker

With the release of Echo Road (their greatest hits record) and an upcoming album of new music in March 2017, Doc Walker are the perfect fit for B&H 2017. Whether they play the main stage, or the front porch, there’s no doubt that their collection of hits, and whatever new tunes they release will make for an entertaining set.

Bobby Wills

When The Lights Go Down Toronto Bobby Wills-8043CCMA nominations, top 10 singles, hot videos, and a growing legion of fans all point to Bobby Wills making his Boots & Hearts debut in 2017.

We’ve seen Bobby play some stages over the last few years, and we know that he has what it takes to pull a crowd in, have them singing along, and enjoying the party.

Little Big Town

In 2015 LBT had to pull out of the Boots & Hearts lineup… and we’re still waiting for them to come back and give us a show that we’ll be talking about long after they leave the stage.

We’ve seen them before and we can’t wait to see them again. Hopefully up on the main stage in front of 40,000 people.

Maren Morris

maren-morris-hero-albumMorris is on top of the world with the recognition that’s coming from singles like 80’s Mercedes and My Church. And if you haven’t heard the rest of Hero, you’re doing yourself a disservice.

We haven’t seen Morris live, but I have a feeling that a few thousand of our best friends singing along to My Church could be a highlight of the weekend.

Kelsea Ballerini

Love Me Like You Mean It, Dibs, and Peter Pan have been a strong start to Ballerini’s career. And after her performance at the 2016 Canadian Country Music Awards (where Boots & Hearts won for Country Festival, Fair or Exhibition of the Year) we know that a Canuck crowd can get behind she when she sings.

With another single sure to come soon, there’s no doubting Kelsi’s talent or popularity, or that she belongs at B&H 2017.

James Barker Band

James Barker Band SiriusXM Fan Stage BH5 Boots and Hearts 2016After winning the Emerging Artist Showcase in 2015 and performing on the main stage in 2016 the James Barker Band has certainly earned the love of the B&H crowd. And with the success of Lawn Chair Lazy and the release of Just Sayin’ – plus an EP coming in the (we hope) near future, we know that country fans are ready to cheer and sing and dance with James, Taylor, Bobby and Connor again at Boots & Hearts 2017!

Chris Stapleton

I know from talking to executive members of the Republic Live team that Chris Stapleton is just as adored internally as he is by the rest of the world. And after the success of Traveller, it’s impossible to think that the Boots & Hearts crowd wouldn’t go wild for the country crooner.

Stapleton played the main stage in 2014 – and he’d be welcome to do it again in 2017 we’re sure!

Brett Kissel

Brett Kissel CNE 2015Also a 2014 B&H alum, Kissel played the Coors Banquet Kick Off Party on the front porch stage… but he’s never been on the main stage.

In 2017, after winning the Fans’ Choice, Male Artist, and Interactive Artist of the Year awards at the CCMA’s this year, we know that thousands (tens of thousands) of Canadian country fans would be okay with the chance to sing along to Started With A Song, Airwaves, Come Pick Me Up, and 3, 2, 1. Bring it on Brett!

Runaway Angel

The first time we saw Runaway Angel they were on the Boots & Hearts stage in the Emerging Artist Showcase. And now, after having seen them grow and become more and more entertaining – we’re ready to see them back on the B&H stage.

Take a listen to No End In Sight (the debut album from Runaway Angel), close your eyes and imagine the songs coming from the stage.

Jessica Mitchell

Jessica Mitchell BH5 Boots and Hearts 2016-Jessica Mitchell stole a lot of hearts in the last year… mine included. Workin’ On Whiskey is the kind of song that gets stuck in your soul. And songs like That Record Saved My Life and Grown Up Things prove that she’s not just a one trick pony.

After opening for Kiefer Sutherland on his 2016 tour, playing a short set of her own on the Sirius XM stage at #BH5, and taking the stage as a special guest with Lindsay Ell, we know that Jessica is ready for an full sized audience of her own at Boots & Hearts in 2017.

BONUS: Keith Urban

keith-urban-ripcord-albumIf you’ve ever seen Urban live, you know he’s killer with a big crowd. And if you haven’t seen Keith Urban live, he should be on your bucket list!

Coming into the sixth year of the festival, it makes sense to try and lock up this guitar wizard for a headlining slot. If you’ve been at any other Boots & Hearts festival over the years you can expect the exact same kind of pandemonium for this set. Plus, there’s Ripcord (March 2016) to sing along to!

Also on my list, but just outside the top 10…

Darius Rucker, Lady Antebellum, Dallas Smith, Shae Dupuy, Terri Clark, Endless Summer, and Johnson Crook.

Who do you think we’ll see at Boots & Hearts 2017? Leave a comment telling us and we might just have some swag to send our favourite answers!

By The Way: Lindsay Ell at Boots & Hearts 2016!

There were a lot of great musicians on stage at Boots & Hearts over the weekend. But you would be hard pressed to find someone shredding and strutting and singing the way that Canada’s own, Lindsay Ell did on the main stage!

Country music fans love to talk about how talented Keith Urban and Brad Paisley are with their guitars. It’s a point of pride for the genre. Well, hear this: If you’re going to talk about those two men because they sing and play guitar at a level above the norm, you need to add Lindsay Ell to your list.

And hear this too: Do not let us catch you saying that Lindsay Ell plays well for a girl. You listen to her play and then you show some damn respect.

The Boots & Hearts crowd braved the hot Sunday sun to find Lindsay on the main stage, and they were rewarded. Because as amazing as her guitar skills are, she equals them with her songwriting and singing – and all of that makes for a really entertaining set, no matter what the weather conditions are!

With a selection of her own songs including, What Does You Good, All Alright, Trippin’ On Love, Shut Me Up, and By The Way and covers like Landslide, Love Yourself, and a Bad Blood/ Thinking Out Loud/ Say What You Need To Say medley, Lindsay had the crowd singing and dancing and waving hands and grooving along.

One of our highlights came when Lindsay covered Chris Stapleton’s Tennessee Whiskey with the help of the very talented Jessica Mitchell who we had talked to just a few minutes earlier.

Lindsay Ell has been killing it in Nashville for the last couple years, playing the Opry and touring with superstars, but we’ve seen her come home for the CCMA and CMAO Awards, and by her own admission, she loves the feeling of coming back across the border into Canada. And on this day, as she played and sang and worked the crowd, she wasn’t the only one happy that she came north to us, even just for the day!
