Cavendish Beach Music Festival 2016: Q&A with The Middle Coast

It’s been a while since we saw The Middle Coast perform at The Horseshoe Tavern and we were thrilled when we heard they’d be playing the Cavendish Beach Music Festival this year.

Not afraid to travel for a show, The Middle Coast will be on the Cavendish Farms Kitchen Stage on Sunday, July 10th. We caught up with the band via email and asked them a few questions about the festival and they were kind enough to answer.

The Middle Coast The Horseshoe 2016

Q. Is there one thing you’re most looking forward to about playing Cavendish Beach Music Festival?

The Middle Coast: We’ve heard great things about Cavendish through our many artist friends who’ve played it. Beautiful location, great music, East-coast hospitality, what’s not to love?

We were quite excited when we were booked for Cavendish – we’re not a Country act and we had never played out that way before, but we were definitely stoked. I believe I received word when I was playing a song live on the radio in Winnipeg, and it just popped up on my phone!

Q. If you were creating a summer playlist, what are the top three tunes?

The Middle Coast: This summer I’ve been digging the new Justin Timberlake, obviously Spirits by our home-grown Strumbellas, and I’ve been really into Paradise by Daniel Caesar.

Q. Who are you most excited to see at Cavendish?

The Middle Coast: On the main stage, probably Ricky Scaggs, on the Kitchen Stage we’re stoked to see River Town Saints!

Q. In 50 words or less, can you tell us and the fans what we can expect to see when you hit the stage at Cavendish?

The Middle Coast: You can expect some funky, hooky, harmonized jams played by three prairie boys who love to make people groove!

Trackside Music Festival: Day 1 Photo Review

There may have been some weather ups and downs but that didn’t dampen our spirits for the first edition of the Trackside Music Festival.

We pretty much kept to the main stage and watched some of our all time favourites, and some heavy hitters, knock it out of the park.

Check out our photos and stay tuned for Day 2!

Riot Fest Toronto 2015 Day 2: Photo Review

What a spectacular day of music! The sun was out, the mud from day 1 was cleared up, the music was loud and everyone was all in.

My biggest regret from Riot Fest Day 2… missing Andrew W.K

But, the rest of the day was awesome, and to prove it I’m going to let the pictures speak for themselves.

5 Reasons We’re Excited for TURF 2015

The start of TURF is just hours away. It’s our first time covering the festival and we’re pretty excited.

It’s going to be a packed 3 days at Historic Fort York, with 48 acts taking 3 stages (East, West, South) Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. AND there’s a kids stage with something to offer for the little ones in attendance as well!

With all of that action going on it’s hard to key in on just 5 things that we’re excited for this weekend. But we’re going to try!

Here are 5 reasons why we’re excited about TURF!

We’ve Got A New Photographer!

Glen ReichweinWe’ve got a new photographer shooting with us for TURF!

A big welcome to Glen Reichwein, a seasoned photographer who’s getting his feet wet on the festival circuit. Glen has been creating award winning ads for the past 25 years and he’s a master of lighting.

We’re hoping this becomes a regular thing and that means we get to cover more stages at festivals. Say hello if you’re around!

Wilco

WilcoThis might just be the reason we’ve been able to convince Glen to hang out at a festival all weekend (at least a portion of the weekend). Wilco is at the top of Glen’s list for coverage for many reasons. They’ll be playing songs from the new album Star Wars, which can you get here, and hopefully some of your favourites.

Shakey Graves

Shakey GravesWe’ve heard all kinds of amazing things about Shakey Graves. Everyone we talked to this summer let us know we HAD TO see this band.

The new LP, And the War Came showcases a mix of styles and does not disappoint.

We’re listening and we’ll be there!

Pixies

PixiesLegendary and influential, they paved the way for many of the late ’80’s bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Radiohead. We’re so happy they’re back together and we can’t wait to check out this set.

Here’s hoping they play all 5 of their Top 10 hits from the Modern Rock chart… Monkey Gone to Heaven, Here Comes Your Man, Velouria, Letter to Memphis and Head On.

Birds of Bellwoods

Birds of Bellwoods Cameron House NXNE 2015It’s no secret we’ve got a special place in our hearts for this band. We’ve been following them for a while and we were there when they were able to announce they’d be playing TURF this year.

If you haven’t already seen them performing at one of our favourite spots in Toronto, or in the Emerging Artist Showcase at Boots & Hearts this year, we can tell you this… They’re a great group of super talented guys and we think you should add them to your schedule. Trust us, you won’t regret it.

She’s With Me: High Valley at Boots & Hearts 2015!

High Valley Boots and Hearts 2015High Valley loves Boots & Hearts.

It’s the only possible explanation for their appearance 4 years in a row – and they pretty much told us as much when we sat down with them after their Friday set on the main stage.

Brad and Curtis Rempel gave a crowd all the energy they had as the evening audience made their way to the big stage, and they were repaid with fans who sang along with their hits, cheered with appreciation, and generally had just as good a time as the Alberta born brothers did.

High Valley gave the Boots & Hearts crowd a set that included favourites I Will Stand By You, Love You For A Long Time, On The Combine, and A Father’s Love (dedicated to their dad) – and they also gave us newer hits She’s With Me and County Line which have received a fantastic reaction from fans and country radio.

Gospel Brunch Jason McCoy The Lovelocks High Valley Boots and Hearts 2015Note: The brothers also joined Jason McCoy and The Lovelocks on Sunday morning as part of the Gospel Brunch and gave us some good God loving fun with tracks like Hallelujah, I’m Ready To Go.

In addition to their musical duties, High Valley once again handled some of the hosting responsibilities at Boots & Hearts… it’s become their gig, and while The Reklaws may have started to creep in on their turf, we have a feeling it’s theirs until, as Brad said, they retire some day.

The boys also announced during their set that a text came in from CMT on Friday telling them that the video for She’s With Me had reached #1, their second consecutive hit on the countdown. It’s a good time to be High Valley.

High Valley Boots and Hearts 2015And if you’re looking to see them on the road in the near future you can catch them in Ottawa and Oshawa at the start of October – and keep an eye on their website for more shows to be announced.

Before our sit down time was up we asked High Valley to describe Ricky Skaggs for us… and their first reaction was “Legendary”. They expanded on that by telling us that Skaggs is “somehow a super humble guy for someone who is such a legend.” and that he is always willing to play, to help, and most of all – talk about all things mandolin.

Check out some more pics of High Valley at Boots & Hearts 2015 and stay tuned for more.

Sun Drunk: The Reklaws at Boots & Hearts 2015!

For the third year in a row, Stuart and Jenna Walker were up on the Boots & Hearts stage doing their thing in front of the crowd. But this year was different.

The Reklaws Boots and Hearts 2015In 2013 The Reklaws won the Emerging Artist Showcase and in 2014 they returned to play for the crowd… but in 2015 they really showed us what they had, and did it in front of the biggest B&H audience they’d ever had.

The Republic Live team announced that there were 32,000 in the park on Thursday night, and many of those fans made their way to the Front Porch stage for the start of, and during, the set that started the Coors Banquet Kick Off Party – we talked to Jenna and Stuart later in the weekend and they told us that they would have played to 6 people if that’s who was out there, but it was pretty cool to play to significantly more than that.

The brother and sister duo also told us that they knew their job was to get people pumped up for the acts that were headlining the night – and they didn’t disappoint. Opening with their current single Sun Drunk was a surprising decision, but one that worked in showing who in the crowd has been listening to country radio and has heard the band’s newest offering.

The Reklaws Boots and Hearts 2015Capitalizing on the crowd’s natural energy was key for the young singers, and as their set continued with a string of higher tempo numbers, they did just that. Covers in the set included Boondocks (Little Big Town), 4 5 Seconds (Rihanna, Kanye West, Paul McCartney), and The South (The Cadillac Three), and they all earned cheers and prompted loud singing from the accumulated mass of country music lovers.

Note: The duo closed their set with an original song dedicated to the festival and aptly called Boots and Hearts. It was a nice touch, got the fans into the action and finished their time on a nice high.

The Reklaws Boots and Hearts 2015While we were sitting down Friday we also asked about new music and an album and when we can expect that to happen… The Reklaws told us that they have lots of music written and ready, but they don’t want to rush things. They’re actively looking for the right team to put their record together and when that comes together we’ll get a better answer.

Jenna and Stuart also took care of hosting duties Friday on the Main Stage and Sunday during the Emerging Artist Showcase on the Front Porch Stage showing us that they are becoming more and more comfortable not only putting on their show, but entertaining crowds however they need to, whenever they get the opportunity.

When we asked them if they’d be back if they were asked they were 100% into the idea… maybe we’ll be seeing them again in 2016.

Check out the set list, more pics and stay tuned for more coming soon…

Boys of Summer: Emerson Drive, Wes Mack, and Dylan Scott at Boots & Hearts 2015!

There’s no argument about the talent that showed up at Boots & Hearts 2015… and while we have put a lot of focus on the ladies leading up to, during, and following the festival, the men didn’t disappoint.

Between 2 stages and 2 days, Dylan Scott, Wes Mack, and Emerson Drive played their sets for the country music fans in Oro-Medonte – and none of them let us down.

Dylan Scott

Dylan Scott Boots and Hearts 2015 6Dylan Scott took the Front Porch Stage on Saturday in when he came out the young crowd under the tent let him hear a mighty cheer that put a smile on his face instantly.

Starting his set with Lay It On Me, Scott gave back all the energy the audience was feeding him, and blasted out the words as the fans sang them back in unison. It wasn’t lost on him, and after the song he told everyone how impressed he was with their noise level and told them if they kept it up, “We’re gonna have a party this afternoon. I promise you that.”

Dylan Scott is a star on the rise, and one we’ve had our eye on for a while. We can’t wait to see him again, hopefully really soon.

Wes Mack

Wes Mack Boots and Hearts 2015From Emerging Artist Showcase contestant to Main Stage love, Wes Mack is becoming more and more familiar with Boots & Hearts.

On Sunday afternoon Wes popped out onto the stage and gave it all he had for the fans that sat, stood, and danced in the bright sunshine. This Canadian isn’t new to big crowds, opening for Shania Twain will certainly get you used to seeing people in the audience – but he hasn’t taken it for granted either.

With a set that included The Way You Let Me Down, Before You Drive Me Crazy, a cover of Jason Aldean’s Take A Little Ride, and a great rendition of Duet with the help of Kira Isabella, Wes Mack showed that he belongs on stage just as much as he belongs on TV screens.

We’re excited for new music from Wes Mack and the release of Edge of the Storm on September 4th!

Emerson Drive

Emerson Drive Boots and Hearts 2015The boys of Emerson Drive saved the day when the helped fill the hole left by Little Big Town at Boots & Hearts. By taking Dallas Smith’s scheduled spot they gave us a full Sunday of music on the main stage – and they came ready.

The band has been together for a while (20 years now) and that time has supplied them with a great collection of songs to play live, the skills they need to put on a great show, and has not taken away their enjoyment of the whole thing.

Note: We know Emerson Drive put on a good show because we saw Republic Live co-founder Shannon McNevan singing along in the crowd.

Like Wes Mack, Emerson Drive also brought out a friend with Tebey joining the boys to sing their country-fied version of Avicii’s Wake Me Up. That was a nice surprise that we didn’t see coming!

Good Times: Trinity Bradshaw at Boots & Hearts 2015!

A year ago I sat on a bale of straw backstage with Trinity Bradshaw after she competed in the Emerging Artist Showcase… not long after that she was announced as a finalist, and the next day she won the whole damn thing.

Trinity Bradshaw Boots and HeartsFast forward 12 months and Trinity has a great single, performed on Canada AM, played 17 shows in 10 days at the venerable Calgary Stampede, opened for Shania Twain in PEI, and worked her ass off every step of the way.

On Sunday, Trinity added the Boots & Hearts main stage to her list of recent accomplishments.

With a big smile on her face, a boat load of energy, and an opportunity that she’d been waiting for, Trinity took her turn on the big stage and didn’t disappoint. There were shout outs to Summerside from the crowd, there were early day drinkers, there were singers, and there were cheers… well deserved.

Trinity Bradshaw Boots and HeartsWe love Trinity, she’s great on stage, but for the last year she’s also been great with us. We’ve chatted, she’s written with us here, and she is generally just a delightful person. So when we got to see her later in the afternoon and exchange big hugs and smiles and talk about how much we loved Eric Church’s set on Saturday, and how cool it was that she finally got to meet Dallas Smith in person, it felt like the cherry on top.

Trinity Bradshaw showed the Sunday Boots & Hearts crowd that she deserves to be there. We’re proud of her – and we know that we’re all going to be seeing a lot more of her soon and for a long time.

Check out Trinity’s set list from Sunday’s show, more pics and stay tuned for more coming soon.

Tangled Up: Thomas Rhett at Boots & Hearts 2015!

Thomas Rhett Boots and Hearts -3389With the sun still shining, the headline crowd rolling in, and a blue solo cup in his hand, Thomas Rhett took advantage of his time on the Boots & Hearts main stage by putting on a show that definitely made him some new fans.

After having seen Thomas play an acoustic show at Toronto’s Rock ‘n’ Horse Saloon a few months ago, we were excited to hear his music with the sound and energy of a full band – and we weren’t let down. From the start of the set with South Side, to the Crash And Burn finale, Thomas Rhett Akins, Jr. showed the Canadian crowd why he’s a rising star in country music.

Note: We loved the flowered shirt that Thomas wore on Sunday. This is new country. You don’t need a cowboy hat to play the game…

Thomas Rhett Boots and Hearts -3524

Thomas Rhett’s set also included 2 new songs from his upcoming Tangled Up album (available September 25, 2015) that we hadn’t heard before, but certainly have made us excited for the release. Be ready for T-Shirt and Die A Happy Man to hit radio, YouTube, and iTunes.

And while this show was a party, and there was singing and dancing (shaking your hips would surely be mandatory if Rhett had his way) – I also got unexpectedly choked up when he played an acoustic version of Beer With Jesus and thousands of people sang along with him.

Anything Goes: Florida Georgia Line at Boots & Hearts 2015!

On a Sunday night, after 4 days of country music and beer and dancing and sweat and fried food and new friends and old friends, Florida Georgia Line took over the Boots & Hearts main stage and brought the energy we expected…

Florida Georgia Line Boots and Hearts -3737There was perhaps more anticipation for the start of this set than any other after an unfortunate delay to the the start of it – and maybe the biggest release of energy and cheering and relief when Tyler and Brian started their show with Every Night, a heap of beach balls flying into the crowd, and a whole lot of singing from the 35,000+ in attendance.

We had never seen FGL before, and while we knew it was going to be a party, we didn’t know that we were going to be singing along with all of the radio hits, catching a case of the feels when the boys slowed it down for Dirt, and being really happy and impressed when they invoked our more classic country sensibilities by going to Alabama, Garth Brooks, and Alan Jackson.

Florida Georgia Line Boots and Hearts -3799Without a doubt, these boys like to have a good time. And they want for the people in the crowd to have a good time. Their banter is polished, their energy is infectious, and they aren’t scared to pander in all the right ways – telling the crowd they’d missed Canada with an exclamation of “it’s been too damn long”.

If we had to pick two highlight moments of the Florida Georgia Line set, we’d have to say…

  1. The sound of the crowd singing along to Round Here, the first song that they really got loud and proud to know the song and show the artists what they had to offer.
  2. The end of the show, the boys playing Cruise, and busting out the Nelly remix version – supplying the rap as needed.

Check out the set list from Sunday night, some more pics and stay tuned for more coming soon!Florida Georgia Line Boots and Hearts -3760

Canadian Takeover: Dallas Smith and Chad Brownlee at Boots & Hearts 2015!

Chad Brownlee Boots and Hearts -2542Saturday at Boots & Hearts we got a double shot of Canadian country music talent when Chad Brownlee and Dallas Smith took over the main stage back-to-back.

First up was Chad Brownlee, who we just saw at the Blue Jays pre-game – and who we are happy we saw again. This guy puts on a great show, and the fans knew it. There was a nice cheer to start off the show when the band took the stage, and the evening crowd kept filing in throughout the set to make it a pretty great group of people singing and dancing.

Chad Brownlee Boots and Hearts -2576With a selection of country radio hits to choose from, a 2015 nationwide tour under his belt, and a voice that was made to sing, this former Vancouver Canucks draft pick made people happy.

Chad is also incredibly handsome, which we saw people saying both in the crowd and on the side of the stage. It’s not news to anyone who has seen his face before, but it’s worth mentioning – just look at the pics.

But our favourite thing, and we’re pretty sure Chad loved it too, was looking over the crowd and seeing how many people knew the words and were singing along.

Dallas Smith Boots and Hearts -2747After a short turn over break, Dallas Smith came out to a great crowd reaction, which I’m sure felt good for a guy who wasn’t originally booked for that slot. In a great move, Dallas slid over from Sunday to fill in for Little Big Town, and it was the perfect decision. From the first song the Boots & Hearts crowd was jacked up and ready to party. And the rock and roll country sound was a great lead-in to headliner Eric Church.

Dallas isn’t new to the performing thing, he did with Default and now he does it country – and he’s not new to Boots & Hearts, we saw him in 2012 and 2014, and this was bigger and better and showed that this is a guy who just keeps putting in the work and keeps making new fans.

Dallas Smith Boots and Hearts -2682The 19 song set gave us a little bit of everything with a cover of Pontoon as a Get Well Soon tribute to LBT’s Jimi Westbrook, some Imagine Dragons’ Radioactive, a brand new song Kids With Cars, and all of the hits we were ready for and sing along to on the radio all the time.

Somewhere north of 25,000 people loved every minute of Dallas Smith’s set. And that includes us.
