2017 Country Music Association of Ontario Awards Winner Recap!

On a hot Sunday night in London, the Ontario country music community came together to recognize greatness in the genre over the last 12 months, and it was a party for everyone involved.

The Country Music Association of Ontario awards were handed out at Centennial Hall, with host Jason McCoy (The Road Hammers) keeping the audience entertained and the show moving forward as planned. And as it moved forward it became clear that the 2017 Awards were a coming out party for one small town Ontario singer in particular.

Bowmanville’s Meghan Patrick was the big winner of the evening, taking home trophies for Female Artist of the Year, Album of the Year, Rising Star, and Music Video of the Year. With hits and crowd favourites Bow Chicka Wow Wow, Grace & Grit, Still Loving You, and the new single, Be Country With Me, it should be no real surprise to see Patrick recognized to this degree by her peers and industry professionals. And while she may be living in Nashville right now, we know that Meghan Patrick still holds a soft spot and a lot of love for her Ontario hometown.

Other big winners on the night included Tim Hicks (Male Artist of the Year), whose Live album is definitely worth a listen if you haven’t checked that out yet, Cold Creek County (Group or Duo of the Year), who have a busy summer coming up, James Barker Band (Fans’ Choice), who are on fire right now after their tour with Dean Brody, and River Town Saints (Single of the Year), who have a brand new single, Woke Up Like This, and self titled album available now.

It’s a great thing to see the Ontario country music community come together with their peers and fans for a night like this, and it’s amazing to see the smiles and looks of love in the eyes of the winners, their families, and their devoted fans.

Check out the full list of artist award winners, as well as some of our favourite photos of the 2017 CMAO Award winners live in action over the last few years!

River Town Saints: Self Titled Album Review

Nobody has been waiting, or is more excited for the River Town Saints self-titled album than the River Town Saints.

The boys in the band have been working hard for the last three years to entertain, write, record, and make country music their lives… and they truly love it. We’ve seen with our own eyes just how much effort and passion these five dudes bring to the table, or stage rather, when they have the chance, and have no doubts about their ability to do it on a larger scale as we move forward.

Heck, they’ve already graduated from the Boots & Bourbon stage where we first saw them during Canadian Music Week 2015 (just months before they signed with Open Road Recordings), to an opening spot on Kip Moore’s tour this year.

And this new album, including previous singles, A Little Bit Goes A Long Way, Cherry Bomb, and the Top 10, Bonfire, will give RTS fans more music to sink their teeth into. Eight tracks fill out the record, and while we do wish that number was 12 or 13, we know that these new tracks… including the brand new single, Woke Up Like This, will surely connect with live audiences, streamers, and radio listeners from coast to coast – creating bigger, louder, longer sing alongs than the band has ever heard before!

We also know that the penchant for covers, medleys, and good times aren’t likely to go anywhere when River Town Saints play River Town Saints, live.

But for now, Chris, Chris, Jeremy, Jordan, and Dan should celebrate this new, debut, album release. It’s a great achievement that is worthy of pride. And, more importantly, it’s a good country record, it’s a fun listen, it sounds great, and it represents everything we’ve come to know and love about the band and its members. It’s fun loving, good timing, happy listening country music. There are no artificial colours or flavours, this is River Town Saints.

From Bonfire through to Hungover It, River Town Saints have recorded an album that is going to get a lot of play by a lot of people this summer. And it will deserve every single spin that it gets!

River Town Saints Tracklist

1. Bonfire
2. Cherry Bomb
3. Woke Up Like This
4. How I Got To You
5. A Little Bit Goes A Long Way
6. Friday Night
7. I Hope You’re Driving
8. Hungover It
9. A Little Bit Goes A Long Way – Acoustic

Get yourself ready to listen and love and share this album. And when you see River Town Saints live, give Chris LaBelle a fist bump. He’ll know why.

Shake These Walls/Hearts On Fire Tour Q&A: Chad Brownlee & Tim Hicks

If you’re a Canadian country music fan, you’re probably already aware that Chad Brownlee and Tim Hicks are hitting the road together in 2017 for co-headlining dates and a Hearts On Fire/Shake These Walls combo tour.

But what you might not know if how funny Chad and Tim are when they get in the same room together… or what toy Chad would wish for this Christmas, or Tim’s favourite classic Christmas carol to sing.

So to give you a little more insight into 2 of Canadian country’s biggest stars, we got the boys to ask each other a few questions so we could share them with you!

But before we get to that, let’s look at just how impressive these tour dates are going to be…

We’ve had the chance to see both Tim Hicks and Chad Brownlee on a few stages over the last few years, and if you’ve seen 1 or both of them as well, you know a few things.

1) They both like to play loud. This isn’t soft, slow country music all the time. Although some of that lives in their full sets. This is good timing, boot stomping, beer drinking music and it’s a lot of fun.

2) They both have hits to play for the crowd. In the last few years Tim and Chad have both released some awesome songs that have resonated with audiences. And if you’ve never had a chance to sing along live to Stronger Beer, When The Lights Go Down, Stompin’ Ground, or Hearts On Fire – you need to take that chance and enjoy it!

3) Chad and Tim are both solid dudes. Good guys that we have been privileged to meet and hangout with even a little bit. That’s always a nice bonus!

Now… dates and cities. Check them out and if you can see Tim or Chad, or if you’re lucky, both of them together, we highly suggest looking into tickets!

Cherry Bomb: River Town Saints at Boots & Hearts 2016!

“You can tell everyone that Timberlake is our favourite Justin.”

That’s just one of the tidbits that came from our hangout with River Town Saints after their Sunday set at Boots & Hearts 2016!

Earlier in the afternoon, in front of a raucous crowd of country music loving individuals, the boys went to work and put on a helluva show with the exclamation point coming during Cherry Bomb.

The crowd was 100% ready for the boys’ breakout hit, and when the time came, they sang louder than I think any of the 5 dudes on stage could have imagined or even hoped for. In fact, when we asked them about it later on they told us that it felt like it was the loudest of the summer circuit so far. They also told us that it was cool to look out and see people singing along to songs that haven’t even been released yet meaning that A) They’ve been to a lot of shows and have learned them, or B) They’re paying attention and picking them up as they go – and Chris, Chris, Dan, Jordan, and Jeremy seem to be cool with either of those options being the truth.

Note: It can be hard to stay on track in interviews, especially when it’s not the first time you’ve talked to someone. But this one was especially hard because we’d never done an official interview together, and these guys are way to funny to keep on a tight Q&A schedule!

River Town Saints BH5 Boots and Hearts 2016-

Between the talk about custom action figures, bobble heads, and Pez dispensers designed for the guys, we actually did find out some stuff we were looking for.

🍒 There’s an EP coming at the end of 2016!

🍒 There are plans for a full album early in 2017!

🍒 River Town Saints are working in the studio now to make those 2 things happen.

🍒 The band is super excited for their CCMA nomination for 2016 Rising Star Award…

🍒 and they’re excited to have real live passes to CCMA events this year so they don’t have to sneak in like they may or may not have done in 2015.

🍒 The guys are pumped for the 2016 One Horse Town concert in Truro, NS where they’ll open for Dean Brody and Chad Brownlee (we really wish we were going to be in Truro for that one.) on September 16.

🍒 They do a lot of driving between shows (like a lot!) and van rules dictate that the driver gets to pick the music. So we asked what’s been played lately and the list is so varied that it’s hard to know where to start. There’s Maren Morris (who we love), The 1975, Justin Timberlake’s newest record, Metal, 2000’s pop punk, and an assortment of other musical genres and artists that we couldn’t even try to keep track of.

Note: This question is what brought us to the “Justin” conversation and the statement from the top of the post.

The guys also told us to tell you to keep an eye on rivertownsaints.com and their social media channels (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) for details on what’s coming up, behind-the-scenes fun stuff, and more.

The first time we saw River Town Saints was Canadian Music Week 2015… they’ve done a lot of work and come a long way since then – including to Boots & Hearts. We’re willing to bet we’ll see them back again, and we’re hoping to see them before that too!

CMAO Awards 2016 Wrap and Photo Review!

Markham, ON – On a gorgeous Monday night, country music gathered to celebrate the Ontario artists and industry leaders that are making music so many of us are enjoying all across Canada at the Country Music Association of Ontario (CMAO) Awards!

CMAO Awards 2016 Jason McCoyFrom the red carpet to the award show, hosted by Jason McCoy (who was hilarious and engaging from start to finish, which was no surprise), it was a night of celebrations, surprises, amazing performances, and the chance to meet up with some of our favourite people in the country music world.

But most importantly it was a celebration… a chance for everyone to come together and celebrate just how great the country music in Ontario is. We are lucky to have great artists and producers and festivals and fans in this province, and this was a chance to recognize that.

We have a ton of photos from the CMAO awards, and we have the full list of winners for you too. But before that…

During the award pre-show, and throughout the night, we had a chance to talk to some of the artists in attendance, and we want to share some of the things we learned from them…

CMAO Awards 2016 Tebey★ Tebey was really excited to get up on stage and sing his new song, Old School, and thinks that it could turn into a real crowd favourite.

☆ Tebey also has big tour news coming for this fall… but it’s a secret right now, and we weren’t able to talk him into giving us any details. He’s sorry and we’re sorry – but we’re sure it will be exciting!

CMAO Awards 2016 Jason Blaine★ Jason Blaine is getting ready for the most exciting summer of his career with festival dates at Boots & Hearts, Pomeroy Guitars and Wagons, Lucknow Music in the Fields, and Smoke & Spurs + he’s playing with Rascal Flatts in Halifax, and more!

☆ Jason is also getting ready to golf with his 3rd annual charity golf classic coming up on June 14 at Pembrooke Golf Club. Click to learn more!

★ Runaway Angel had a great time on their radio tour for the release of their debut album No End In Sight.

CMAO Awards 2016 Runaway Angel☆ 2 of the 3 angels are all for fun stunt adventures… but 1 isn’t. We won’t tell you who, but if you have a guess we want to hear it!

★ Meghan Patrick has been rocking hard all over the country, and broke a guitar in Edmonton last week… but it will be fixed soon and ready for the summer.

CMAO Awards 2016 Meghan Patrick☆ Meghan will be at Boots & Hearts, Cavendish Beach Music Festival, CMT Music Fest, Ottawa Bluesfest, and she’ll be at the Calgary Stampede to open for Lady Antebellum. She’s excited and we’re excited for her.

★ Andrew Hyatt loves to work with his hands, and the wooden 6-pack holders he made last summer gave him a chance to marry his trades background with his 2015 EP, Never Back Down.

CMAO Awards 2016 Andrew Hyatt☆ If you want to hear more from Andrew call your local country station and request Me And A Girl And A Radio!

★ The Lovelocks have a packed summer that will take them to Havelock, Huntsville, Dauphin, Lucknow, and Tilsonburg… and they will also be at Roy Thompson Hall in Toronto as part of Jim Cuddy’s Fort McMurray fundraiser on June 27. Click for more info!

CMAO Awards 2016 Ali Rainey The Lovelocks☆ Ali and Zoe are also very happy to have released Time After Time to radio. It’s their 1st cover as a single, and they couldn’t be more pleased with the way it turned out. We saw it live back in March, and if you haven’t heard it yet, you need to go find it.

★ The Reklaws will be MCing at Boots & Hearts this summer… extending the relationship that they’ve built with the festival. AND they’ll be taking the stage, which is always a good time.

Now, let’s get to the big info from the night… the award winners. HUGE congratulations goes out to both Jason Blaine and Cold Creek County for taking home 3 trophies each. And we’re also very excited for Leah Daniels who won the 2015 Rising Star Award and is now the 2016 Female Artist of the Year.

2016 Country Music Association of Ontario Awards Preview: Performer Q&A

The Country Music Association of Ontario Awards are coming up quickly (Monday, May 30) and we’re pretty damn excited to see the artists show up, hang out, win some awards, and jump up on stage to perform for the crowd at the Flato Markham Theatre.

To get Ontario country fans ready we caught up with some of the artists that will be performing at the awards show to see who they’re listening to, who they’re looking forward to seeing, what the CMAO means to them… and what they will or won’t be playing on the 30th!

Big thanks and high fives to Tim Hicks, Meghan Patrick, River Town Saints, Mike Robins of Autumn Hill, and Runaway Angel for answering our questions – we can’t wait to see all of you in Markham!

Tim Hicks Performance CMAO Awards 2015-4158Q: How important do you think it is to have the Country Music Association of Ontario (CMAO) here to recognize homegrown excellence in Ontario?

Tim Hicks: So important. There is so much talent in Ontario when it comes to music, and Country music specifically, so having a night to recognize that is a must as far as I’m concerned. I’m really flattered that I can be a part of the CMAO celebration and proud of my home province and all the talent that resides there.

Meghan Patrick: I think it’s a great way to get to know and connect with your fellow Ontario musicians, and an excellent opportunity, especially for new and upcoming artists to be given the chance to perform and get recognition for all their hard work in a “local” setting.

River Town Saints: We think it’s super important. Having the CMAO provides an opportunity for a lot of up and coming artists/singers/song writers/musicians to be recognized in the industry, and to be supported locally. Be keeping it just in Ontario (as opposed to artists from the whole country) it allows for a smaller group to get together and celebrate each others accomplishments.

Autumn Hill: I think it’s absolutely imperative to have the CMAO recognizing homegrown talent, I think traditionally, Ontario is not the first place you think about when you think of Canadian country music. There is so much incredible talent and music coming from here, we need to nurture, promote and recognize all the amazing artists from Ontario. I think the CMAO do a superb job in that and it’s wonderful they are there to offer so much support.

Runaway Angel: We believe it is extremely important to recognize the talent we have here in Ontario and help that talent succeed within its own province and beyond. It’s wonderful that the CMAO plays that role for us.

Meghan Patrick The Phoenix CMW 2016Q: We’ve been told in the past that award shows are great because the serve as mini reunions, is there anyone you’re especially looking forward to seeing?

Meghan Patrick: Too many to name… We’ve got so many great people coming out of Ontario! I’m excited to see all my old friends and to meet some new ones.

Tim Hicks: Yeah it really is like a reunion! That is the main reason I get excited about nights like the CMAOs, it’s a chance to connect or re-connect with other artists and just talk about our experiences. I’m looking forward to seeing everyone!

RTS: We love all our fellow bands in the infamous 401 club. It’ll be fun to see the girls from Runaway Angel and Leah Daniels again – we haven’t seen them since last summer and we had a great time doing some festivals and fairs together.

Autumn Hill: Awards shows are great for reunions, that’s absolutely true. I love the CMAOs for that its always a great time backstage, seeing friends that you don’t get to see all the time. I am looking forward to seeing, the Small Town Pistols, Jason Blaine, Tebey; really the whole gang. It will be great to see everyone. It’s always a blast.

Runaway Angel: We love seeing the emerging artists that keep coming back, and improving every year. It really does feel like a family, and it’s amazing to see that everyone genuinely supports each other.

River-Town-Saints-CMW-18Q: Is there anyone whose performance you’re especially looking forward to?

RTS: Tim Hicks is always a blast live, so are the Road Hammers. Having them together seems like it should be pretty wild.

Tim Hicks: I always like watching the up-and-comers perform. It’s a bit like looking into the future of Canadian Country Music.

Meghan Patrick: Super stoked to see Jason McCoy and The Road Hammers collaborate with Tim Hicks. A few of my favorite guys! And always love hearing my girl Jessica Mitchell sing.

Autumn Hill: I am a huge Jason McCoy fan, of course of his music but also as the host of the show. I think him hosting, really brings the show to another level, he is so on, and always hilarious. So of course, I can’t wait to see The Road Hammers. I’m also really excited to see Meghan Patrick, I’m loving her new album and she is going to rock it.

Runaway Angel: Honestly it’s impossible for us to choose. There is so much new talent slated to play this year, and we’re just excited to see the high quality performances we know everyone will bring.

Autumn Hill at the 2015 CMAO Awards.

Q: We know it’s a little bit of a long shot, but will you tell us what song you’re playing at the show?

Autumn Hill: Well I can tell you that it’s a song I’m super excited about, it also might happen to be our brand new single. It’s one of my absolute favourites to play and I can’t wait. It’s about a great night, which the CMAO’s always are.

Tim Hicks: Not a chance. Good try though 😉

Meghan Patrick: Hmm… I might have to “bow” out of this question and keep it a surprise.

RTS: We haven’t decided yet. Might just wing it.

Runaway Angel: Of course! We’ll be playing our newest single June! Can’t wait to share it.

Runaway Angel Runaway Angel CD Release Boots and BourbonQ: If we snagged your phone right now, what three artists would we find at the top of your playlist?

Runaway Angel: Cadence: James Bay, Jessica Mitchell, Justin Bieber
Ann: Just love listening to the radio, it’s impossible for me to choose.
Stacey: Dixie Chicks, Meghan Patrick & Lindi Ortega

Tim Hicks: Right now I’m listening to a lot of Chris Stapleton, Merle, and Led Zeppelin. I tend to reach backward when I’m looking for new stuff to listen to. I like to understand where everyone came from musically, so I tend to lean towards classic in both Rock and Country. That being said, I had to see what all the hype was about with “Traveller” and let me say I totally get it.

Meghan Patrick: John & Jacob, Sturgill Simpson and Colter Wall

RTS: Chris Labelle: Kira Isabella, Leah Daniels, Petric
Jordan: Dean Brody, Thousand Foot Krutch, The Cult
Dan: Red, Killswitch Engage, Paper Tongues
Chris McComb: Maren Morris, Katy Perry, The 1975
Jeremy: The 1975, Brothers Osborne, Kim Mitchell

Autumn Hill: Keith Urban, Sam Hunt and Chris Stapleton, I am a huge fan of these artists. I love listening to whole albums and really taking them in. I am loving Ripcord, Keith’s brand new album, it’s so different and just really cool.

CMW 2016: Country Music Friday with Cold Creek County, Chris Lane, River Town Saints, Petric & Domino

If you judge a party by how hot and sweaty and packed and fun… then Friday night at Boots & Bourbon was a banger.

If you judge a concert by a talented lineup and tight musicianship and engagement and great music… then Friday night at Boots & Bourbon was top notch.

As Canadian Music Week 2016 moved into the weekend we headed to Queen Street East for a country music showcase that featured some sweet tunes from Canadian artists + a special performance by an up and coming American that the crowd was certainly happy to see up on the stage.

We were there, in the hot, sweaty, awesome, party… so let’s get to it!

Boots & Bourbon CMW 2016 Lineup, Friday May, 6

✮ Petric
✮ Domino
✮ River Town Saints
✮ Chris Lane
✮ Cold Creek County

Let’s start at the start… Petric had the “open the show and start the party” slot on Friday, and they didn’t shy away from it. The brothers from Winnipeg were playing their first true Toronto show, and they invited the crowd to come up and enjoy it right from the front of the stage.

With an extra guitar playing with them, Petric treated the early party goers to an acoustic set that included Band of Brothers, It Girl, Let The World Roll By, Payphone (Maroon 5), If I Was Your Man, Somebody Somewhere (Dallas Smith), and Here Goes Everything… and more.

The set was a great way to start the night, and as a quick point – the way Jason and Tom Petric sing together is enough to make anyone think maybe they should sing more with their siblings… until we remember that we don’t sound that good at all.

Check out It Girl from Friday night and more photos at the bottom of the post.

2nd on the Boots & Bourbon stage was Domino, the 2015 Alberta Country Music Association’s Group of the Year and Fan’s Choice Award Winners.

The quartet started their set with a pretty awesome rendition of Alabama’s Mountain Music, and that was all the crowd needed to get up to the stage and into the show. Domino continued their set with sweet harmonies, tight play, and some really good country music. It’s easy to see why they’re so loved back home!

Tracks like One More Kiss, We Were Right (at country radio now), Big Blue Sky, and even a cover of Little Big Town’s Day Drinkin’ were a fantastic way to keep the party going as the sun went down outside on a Friday night in Toronto.

Well done y’all!

Domino Boots and Bourbon CMW 2016

The middle slot in the night went to a Boots & Bourbon CMW repeat performer. We saw River Town Saints play B&B last May with Kira Isabella, and we were pretty darn happy to see them back again this year.

The 5 dudes from RTS took the stage and brought the crowd even closer to the stage (this is when it started to get real hot and sweaty and amped up) for their set. They kicked things off with huge energy for Don’t Stop and didn’t let down for a minute til they left the stage.

Note: Our new photographer Ray Williams sent me a text confirming that this was the best set he’s ever seen River Town Saints play.

The rest of the set was a ton of fun with performances of I Like It Like That, Cherry Bomb (new single at radio now), A Little Bit Goes A Long Way, Hungover It, a cover of Eric Church’s Drink In My Hand, and a killer medley that included Dust On The Bottle, Sun Daze, The Lazy Song, Party Up (Up In Here), Thrift Shop, and Pour Some Sugar On Me… it was awesome, got a HUGE pop from the crowd, and they deserved it.

Atta be boys!

River-Town-Saints-CMW-18

In the 11pm slot, all the way from Kernsville, North Carolina was Chris Lane!

The American singer took the stage to a great crowd response and dove into a set that kept the party turned all the way up, and the temperature rising. Things started with Broken Windshield View and was on fire from there…

The band brought a ton of sound to the room, and had feet moving, heads nodding, voices screaming, and the energy level all the way to the top!

Lane also gave us a sweet medley that included Use Your Love, Locked Out Of Heaven, Don’t Stop Believin’, Rock and Roll All Nite, Firework & Wrecking Ball… and then added his own tracks like Her Own Kind Of Beautiful, Let Me Love You, For Her, and his track currently featured in Toronto Blue Jays TV ads, Fix.

This is a dude with a big future ahead of him, and in my opinion, he’s a guy that would look good on a tour with Thomas Rhett.

Keep an eye on Chris Lane!
Chris Lane CMW 2016 Boots and Bourbon

Last in our night of awesome country music for Canadian Music Week at Boots & Bourbon was Cold Creek County!

It was easy to see that a lot of fans were in the building for the breakthrough group of small town Ontario boys, and it was even easier to see that their goal from the very start of the set was to give them everything they had to give.

Cold Creek County fills the stage with musicians, and fills the venue with sound, and nobody complains when they do it. With tracks like Our Town, Till The Wheels Come Off, and summer anthem (book it, you’re going to hear this one a lot) Beer Weather… plus a sweet cover of Fat Bottomed Girls and more, these 6 dudes came to party, and that mission was accomplished.

Not a fan in front of the stage was dry or standing still as CCC worked through their set and showed everyone why they won Best New Country Group or Solo Act at the Canadian Radio Music Awards earlier in the day.

Congratulations boys, you earned it!

2016 CMAO Performer Announcement & Contest!

Exciting news for Ontario country music fans dropped this morning when the County Music Association of Ontario announced the live performers at this year’s awards show.

Earlier in April we found out who’s been nominated for the awards, with Tebey, Jason Blaine, and Leah Daniels leading the way… and on May 30 in Markham, we’ll find out who the winners are in all 14 categories, and get to see live performances from some of our favourite starts, and artists in the middle of breaking out right now.

Let’s get to that now actually. The performers for the CMAO Awards at the Flato Markham Theatre are all good choices that will make for a really entertaining show… we can’t wait!

2016 Canadian National Exhibition CNE Bandshell Concert Schedule

Updated with new acts added since original publishing date (June 21, 2016)

Yes, we know that Toronto is still waiting for Spring to really start (enough with the cold and the snow already), and we know that the CNE signals the end of Summer every year… and we’re not trying to get ahead of ourselves or anything, but we just couldn’t resist sharing this news.

CNE 2013 day 4 ferris wheel night-6580The Canadian National Exhibition has released 30 acts for 16 dates on the legendary bandshell stage in 2016… and we know there are more names, and maybe more dates to come.

As always, the CNE will feature a healthy mix of established acts, vintage returns, and young talent – all in town to entertain the crowd and enjoy the fair atmosphere in the city. Acts like Randy Bachman and Alan Frew will excite rock and roll fans of the past, and we guarantee that Juno nominated Scott Helman is going to draw a young crowd that will include some screaming teenage fans.

We’re also excited to see back-to-back-to-back country days on the schedule with George Canyon, Dean Brody, High Valley, and Jess Moskaluke already announced for a Friday through Sunday, weekend run. The question now needs to focus on the openers for Canyon on Friday and Brody on Saturday… we dont’ have any info at all, but we wouldn’t be surprised to have a River Town Saints sighting on one of those nights.

After looking at the calendar there seem to be more dates to be added, but for now we can tell you about these 10… mark them on your calendar!
