Out Of The Blue: Chad Brownlee at Boots & Hearts 2017

Chad Brownlee is a Canadian country music star, and on Saturday we got to catch up with him, and see him perform twice at Boots & Hearts 2017!

Country music fans had two chances to catch Chad Brownlee on Saturday as he took the main stage for his full set, and made an appearance on the SiriusXM stage earlier in the afternoon. And both times the fans in front of him sang and cheered for the B.C. boy as he showed them why he’s a legit nominee for the 2017 Canadian Country Music Association Fans’ Choice Award.

Boots and Hearts 2017 - Chad Brownlee

Early in the afternoon, before Brownlee started singing for the fans, we caught up with him for some photos and a chat. We learned that there’s new music coming soon, with songs written about his own life (both positive and the opposite of that), and a new album, his fifth, planned for an early 2018 release. But before that, the CCMA Awards weekend is coming up in Saskatoon, and that’s a big deal. We talked about the weekend, the parties, having the chance to catch up with industry friends that you may not have seen for the last year, and trying to find time for sleep – and trust us, all three of those things are important, but the last one often gets ignored.

On stage, Chad Brownlee looked anything but tired. Starting his main stage set with Hood Of My Car and rolling through 14 more after that, he owned the Boots & Hearts faithful. The singing was strong at every opportunity, we saw dancing from the front row to the back of the field, and the cheers rang loud for him.

This wasn’t Chad’s first Boots & Hearts experience, so he knew what to expect when he got out there. But we wanted to know about more shows this summer, so we asked for highlights, and he told us that Cavendish Beach Music Festival was great, and that it was awesome to be back at Nashville North and the Calgary Stampede for the fourth time. And if the crowds there were anything like the crowd he had on Saturday, we can see why they’d be highlights.

Boots and Hearts 2017 - Chad Brownlee

Note: We took Chad back a couple of years and asked him for the craziest thing that happened during pre-show floor hockey on the When The Lights Go Down Tour in 2015… and he told us a story about playing in Calgary and asking Bobby Wills for a one-time pass. Now, Chad told us that he was feeling pretty comfortable in his shot (which he should), and his ability to pick the corner on the small shinny net. However, his shot sailed on him and smashed an empty glass water pitcher. Now, we haven’t talked to Bobby about this, so we don’t want to blame his pass… but we’ll let you make your own judgements on the reason.

We’ll be seeing Chad Brownlee again soon as he takes the stage at the 2017 Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto on Saturday, August 26 with Leaving Thomas. If you’re going to be near Toronto that weekend, we’d highly recommend that you come down to the fair for that.

Boots and Hearts 2017 - Chad Brownlee

We know, that at that show, just like Saturday’s Boots & Hearts show, there will be singing along from the crowd when Brownlee plays his hits. When we brought that up he told us that it’s still surreal, and while he may be more experienced more than he once was, it still gives him butterflies to be up on stage. And he says that if those butterflies ever stop showing up, it’ll probably be time to hang ‘em up.

It makes sense to hear him say it, but we’re hoping that moment doesn’t come any time soon. And based on the show that he put on Saturday, and the reaction from the fans, they’re hoping to see a lot more of Chad Brownlee for a long time.

Please Welcome to the Stage… Boots & Hearts 2017 Predictions!

We’re just under 9 months away from Boots & Hearts 2017 at Burl’s Creek in Oro, ON – but it really doesn’t feel like that long at all!

In fact, we’ve already been thinking about B&H a lot, and while we can’t give you many details yet, we can tell you that we’re going to have some very, very exciting things coming up between now and festival season next year.

But for now we want to talk about the potential lineup for the 6th annual country music extravaganza… we don’t have any info that you don’t have. We haven’t talked to the Republic Live team for any tips or rumours. But I have come up with a list of 10 country artists that I think have a legit chance to play at Boots & Hearts next August.

This isn’t an old fashioned wish list, which is why you won’t see names like Garth Brooks, Shania, Reba, or Brooks & Dunn… although it would be really cool if any of those artists headlined. This list is made up of talent that we’ve either seen in the past and believe are a good fit for a return next year, or that we haven’t seen yet, and have a good reason to play such a sweet gig.

This wasn’t an easy list of 10 to make, which is why there are a few names at the bottom that could also be at B&H in 2017. And, I want you list too, so leave a comment!

In no particular order, here we go…

Doc Walker

With the release of Echo Road (their greatest hits record) and an upcoming album of new music in March 2017, Doc Walker are the perfect fit for B&H 2017. Whether they play the main stage, or the front porch, there’s no doubt that their collection of hits, and whatever new tunes they release will make for an entertaining set.

Bobby Wills

When The Lights Go Down Toronto Bobby Wills-8043CCMA nominations, top 10 singles, hot videos, and a growing legion of fans all point to Bobby Wills making his Boots & Hearts debut in 2017.

We’ve seen Bobby play some stages over the last few years, and we know that he has what it takes to pull a crowd in, have them singing along, and enjoying the party.

Little Big Town

In 2015 LBT had to pull out of the Boots & Hearts lineup… and we’re still waiting for them to come back and give us a show that we’ll be talking about long after they leave the stage.

We’ve seen them before and we can’t wait to see them again. Hopefully up on the main stage in front of 40,000 people.

Maren Morris

maren-morris-hero-albumMorris is on top of the world with the recognition that’s coming from singles like 80’s Mercedes and My Church. And if you haven’t heard the rest of Hero, you’re doing yourself a disservice.

We haven’t seen Morris live, but I have a feeling that a few thousand of our best friends singing along to My Church could be a highlight of the weekend.

Kelsea Ballerini

Love Me Like You Mean It, Dibs, and Peter Pan have been a strong start to Ballerini’s career. And after her performance at the 2016 Canadian Country Music Awards (where Boots & Hearts won for Country Festival, Fair or Exhibition of the Year) we know that a Canuck crowd can get behind she when she sings.

With another single sure to come soon, there’s no doubting Kelsi’s talent or popularity, or that she belongs at B&H 2017.

James Barker Band

James Barker Band SiriusXM Fan Stage BH5 Boots and Hearts 2016After winning the Emerging Artist Showcase in 2015 and performing on the main stage in 2016 the James Barker Band has certainly earned the love of the B&H crowd. And with the success of Lawn Chair Lazy and the release of Just Sayin’ – plus an EP coming in the (we hope) near future, we know that country fans are ready to cheer and sing and dance with James, Taylor, Bobby and Connor again at Boots & Hearts 2017!

Chris Stapleton

I know from talking to executive members of the Republic Live team that Chris Stapleton is just as adored internally as he is by the rest of the world. And after the success of Traveller, it’s impossible to think that the Boots & Hearts crowd wouldn’t go wild for the country crooner.

Stapleton played the main stage in 2014 – and he’d be welcome to do it again in 2017 we’re sure!

Brett Kissel

Brett Kissel CNE 2015Also a 2014 B&H alum, Kissel played the Coors Banquet Kick Off Party on the front porch stage… but he’s never been on the main stage.

In 2017, after winning the Fans’ Choice, Male Artist, and Interactive Artist of the Year awards at the CCMA’s this year, we know that thousands (tens of thousands) of Canadian country fans would be okay with the chance to sing along to Started With A Song, Airwaves, Come Pick Me Up, and 3, 2, 1. Bring it on Brett!

Runaway Angel

The first time we saw Runaway Angel they were on the Boots & Hearts stage in the Emerging Artist Showcase. And now, after having seen them grow and become more and more entertaining – we’re ready to see them back on the B&H stage.

Take a listen to No End In Sight (the debut album from Runaway Angel), close your eyes and imagine the songs coming from the stage.

Jessica Mitchell

Jessica Mitchell BH5 Boots and Hearts 2016-Jessica Mitchell stole a lot of hearts in the last year… mine included. Workin’ On Whiskey is the kind of song that gets stuck in your soul. And songs like That Record Saved My Life and Grown Up Things prove that she’s not just a one trick pony.

After opening for Kiefer Sutherland on his 2016 tour, playing a short set of her own on the Sirius XM stage at #BH5, and taking the stage as a special guest with Lindsay Ell, we know that Jessica is ready for an full sized audience of her own at Boots & Hearts in 2017.

BONUS: Keith Urban

keith-urban-ripcord-albumIf you’ve ever seen Urban live, you know he’s killer with a big crowd. And if you haven’t seen Keith Urban live, he should be on your bucket list!

Coming into the sixth year of the festival, it makes sense to try and lock up this guitar wizard for a headlining slot. If you’ve been at any other Boots & Hearts festival over the years you can expect the exact same kind of pandemonium for this set. Plus, there’s Ripcord (March 2016) to sing along to!

Also on my list, but just outside the top 10…

Darius Rucker, Lady Antebellum, Dallas Smith, Shae Dupuy, Terri Clark, Endless Summer, and Johnson Crook.

Who do you think we’ll see at Boots & Hearts 2017? Leave a comment telling us and we might just have some swag to send our favourite answers!

Tougher Than Love: Bobby Wills EP Review and Q&A

Bobby Wills is back!

Not that he ever left really, but every time an artist releases new music it feels like we’re getting them back after they’ve gone away for a little while.

Bobby Wills When The Lights Go Down Toronto-8020For the Calgary country singer it’s been nearly 2 years since his last album, Crazy Enough was released to the world, and now the follow-up EP, Tougher Than Love, is ready to come to fans and stick some songs in people’s heads.

The 6 track set of songs is a great showing of what Bobby offers to country music, a mix of uptempo tracks that you can sing along and stomp your feet and clap your hands to… and some slowed down moments that will drag you deep into a story and put your feelings at risk of being twisted in a knot.

Across all of the songs it’s easy to see that Bobby Wills is still in love with what he does. His voice is true, not trying to be something that he isn’t or hasn’t shown us that he can be in the past – but not sitting back on his past successes either.

Do you follow?

Lead single Won’t You Be Mine is already a Top 10 hit in Canada, and there’s a strong chance that 2 or more other songs on the EP make that kind of statement on the charts.

Bobby Wills Tougher Than Love Track List

1. 30,000 Feet
2. Down By The River
3. Won’t You Be Mine
4. Tougher Than Love
5. If It Ain’t Broke
6. You Lost Me There

If we’re playing a guessing game for the next single to come from Tougher Than Love we’re stuck between the choice of the title track and 30,000 Feet. Both songs are top quality, but are very different. If you’re holding our feet to the fire, we’d pick Tougher Than Love… and we’d be okay with that.

In the middle of all the work he’s been doing to promote the new EP, and being a dad and a Calgary Flames fan, Bobby took a few minutes to play along in a brand new Q&A about the new EP, the fan response to Won’t You Be Mine, and more for us. Check it out!

Q. A year ago you were crossing Canada on the When The Lights Go Down Tour (with Chad Brownlee and Jess Moskaluke), and this year you get to release new music to country fans, how busy has that year in between been for you?

A. It’s been a whirlwind! 2015 was an incredible year, and 2016, with the release of my new album Tougher Than Love, promises to be even crazier!!

Q. How happy are you with the 6 tracks that you’re releasing with Tougher Than Love?

A. I am very excited to share these songs with my fans! With each new project I like to mix it up a bit, integrating my sound with a little something new. On this album we experimented with various sounds and incorporated varied instrumentation; it was an incredible experience to create and record this album!

Bobby Wills Tougher Than Love EP ArtQ. The album art for the EP is different than a lot of what we see these days (you face isn’t on the cover!), and we dig it (not that we don’t love your face)… were you in on the design?

A. Geoffrey Hanson designed the album. He is an incredible talent!! He’s done work for Kings Of Leon, Robert Plant and Ryan Bingham (just to name a few). Honestly, I can’t claim any credit for design, the only instruction was to do something different than what we normally see. He crushed it!!

Q. Won’t You Be Mine is already a fan favourite, and people haven’t even heard the rest of the music yet… how great is to get that response to kick off a project?

A. It’s very cool! We performed it for the first time last summer during festival season. We were pretty confident it was going to work based on the fan reaction, it was wild!

Q. There’s a lot of great new music on the country scene right now, is there anyone that you’re listening to and loving?

A. The diversity that is country music right now is so great! I am listening to the new Lovelocks record a ton these days, along with Chris Stapleton. The Maren Morris record is killer as well.

Q. In 50 words or so, can you tell us what you hope country fans take away from Tougher Than Love?

A. The making of this album was fun, with a capital F, and I hope my fans enjoy it just as much! Mixing a little something for everyone, for me this album is a happiness-fuelled musical experience, exploring classic country sound with a modern edge. The tracks resonate with me, not only as an artist, but as a music lover as well. This album is about simply enjoying the music and sharing that joy with my amazing fans!

Country Music All-Star Hockey Fantasy Draft

With the NHL All-Star Game coming up in Nashville on January 31, we decided to have a little fun with some hockey loving country music stars and hold a fantasy draft of our own.

2016 NHL All Star Game LogoThere are 14 players on the board, 12 skaters and 2 goalies… all picked because of their experience on the ice and/or love of the game.

There are a couple rules… and then we’ll get to the draft!

How It Works…

1. Trish and I will take turns making our picks from the list of country artists below until we each have a team of 7 players.

2. Each team must consist of 1 goalie and 1 woman skater.

3. All other players are up for grabs in any order.

4. Jason & Tom Petric and Brad & Curtis Rempel may be picked individually or as a combo, but if drafted as a pair the next drafter’s turn will have 2 picks to even things up.

The Players

Alan Doyle (Juno Cup goalie)
Brett Kissel (Family Tournament goalie, 2015)
Carrie Underwood (wife of NHL player Mike Fisher, Predators fan)
Jess Moskaluke (Floor Hockey Experience on tour with Chad Brownlee)
Chad Brownlee (former Vancouver Canucks Draft Pick)
Theo Fleury(Former NHL player)
 Cory Marquardt (Former Junior player)
Bobby Wills (floor hockey experience on tour with Chad Brownlee)
 Tom Petric (High School player)
Jason Petric (High School player)
Brad Rempel (Juno Cup player)
Curtis Rempel (Juno Cup player)
Jim Cuddy (Juno Cup captain)
Dierks Bentley (Nashville Rec. League player)

Trish won a coin toss, so she’s got the 1st pick… here we go!

Round 1

Chad Brownlee Boots and Hearts 2015Trish: Chad Brownlee
Not a big surprise to my readers that Chad was my first choice. I watched him work his magic at The Mod Club and I have faith. His NHL career was cut short by injury but I think. at 6’2” in this field, he’s my star defenceman.

Josh: Theo Fleury
Theo Fleury spent a bunch years playing NHL hockey, played in 7 All-Star games, and won a gold medal with Team Canada in 2002… and he’s got a country album that he released in fall 2015. I’m happy with this pick!

Round 2

dierks-bentley-at-boots-and-hearts-2013Trish: Dierks Bentley
Dierks’ spends his spare time playing with the Nashville IceHoles and from what I’ve heard, he can’t get enough hockey. He carries his hockey gear with him while on tour just in case he can get in some ice time. That’s the kind of dedication I want on my team!

Josh: Cory Marquardt
The former junior player has a lot of high energy, and I’m betting his hands are just soft enough on the ice to make some plays.

Round 3

Brett Kissel CNE 2015Trish: Tom Petric
I’ll be counting on Tom as a forward and I’m thinking I’ll put him on a line with his brother.

Josh: Brett Kissel
Brett’s a big hockey fan who strapped on the pads last Christmas to play back home. We’re playing 3 on 3, so I’m not hoping for miracles here, just someone to stop some pucks.

Round 4

Petric 2015Trish: Jason Petric (picked in combo with Tom)
Jason may have spent a little time in the penalty box  during his hockey career. I’m happy to have him as muscle on my team.

Josh: Jim Cuddy
Cuddy’s a vet who knows what he’s doing on the ice. I need a captain, and his experience being the man in charge at the Juno Cup works for me!

Round 5

Jess Moskaluke Bright Lights Big City Toronto The PhoenixTrish: Carrie Underwood
Married to Mike Fisher, Carrie knows hockey. Can she shoot and skate? I hope she’s been practicing since the Oprah video in 2012. She brings a great energy and I’m glad to have her.

Josh: Jess Moskaluke
Jess is a sweetheart, but we’ve seen her amp up the energy on stage, and she spent the When The Lights Go Down tour with a floor hockey stick in her hands. Sign her up!

Round 6

High Valley Boots and Hearts 2015Trish: Curtis Rempel
Curtis grew up playing hockey and with a Juno Cup under his belt I’m sure he’ll be an asset to my team.

Josh: Brad Rempel
I’ll take the other half of High Valley, if nothing else we should create a little healthy rivalry between the brothers Rempel!

Round 7

Bobby Wills When The Lights Go Down Toronto-8020Trish: Alan Doyle
The most mature member of my team, and a lifetime lover of the game, Alan’s proven his worth in the net.

Josh: Bobby Wills
Bobby is another When The Lights Go Down alumni, and I’ll take him to skate with Jess, there’s got to be some chemistry there!

1: Chad Brownlee, Tom Petric, Jason Petric
2: Dierks Bentley, Curtis Rempel, Carrie Underwood
Goalie: Alan Doyle

1: Theo Fleury, Cory Marquardt, Brad Rempel
2: Jess Moskaluke, Bobby Wills, Jim Cuddy
Goalie: Brett Kissel

Results and Evaluation!

Trish: I’m happy with my picks and can’t help but think how awesome their team photo would look. Now if only we could make this game happen!

Josh: Trish has a great team, but I’m pretty happy with my 7 players… and I’d be happy to send ‘em out on the ice for a Country Music All-Star Hockey game any day of the week!

Now tell us whose team you think would win by voting in the poll!

Christmas Q&A with Bobby Wills, The Lovelocks, and Tim Chaisson!

Christmas is so close we can taste the turkey!

Sure, there’s no snow on the ground here, but we’re in the spirit. And we’re not alone! Are you ready?

This year we’re celebrating with some Q&A fun thanks to some of our favourites in Canadian country music. We tried it last year and had a ton of fun with Tim Hicks, Kira Isabella, Runaway Angel, Meghan Patrick, and Riki Knox… and in part 1 of this year’s Q&A we talked to High Valley, Cory Marquardt, and Livy Jeanne!

So, here’s part 2 of our Canadian Country Music Christmas Q&A with Bobby Wills, Ali & Zoe of The Lovelocks, and Tim Chaisson!

Let’s start with an easy one… do you have a favourite Christmas Carol or hymn?
When The Lights Go Down Toronto Bobby Wills-8043Bobby: Silent Night. The lyric and melody are the perfect match, it is a powerful song.

Ali: I do love that Mariah Carey “All I Want For Christmas” song, which seems to officially kick off the Christmas season for me every year. I also love some of the older gems, who drum up a little more nostalgia from my childhood Christmases, like Bing Crosby.

Zoe: It’s honestly impossible to pick just one! I am still in love with Jewel’s whole Christmas album!  Nothing compares!

Tim: I always loved O Holy Night, especially when there’s some nice 3 part harmonies going on in that chorus.

Food is a big part of the holiday process, will you tell us what your favourite part of Christmas dinner is?
Tim Chaisson February 2015Tim: My mother’s stuffing! It’s to die for.

Bobby: We have a weird tradition of doing Lasagna on Christmas Eve, not sure exactly how or when it got started….

Ali: I gotta go with the classic turkey, stuffing and cranberry sauce. But I also love forcing everyone to wear their tacky paper crowns and taking embarrassing photos. 😉

Zoe: Dessert. For sure.

Let’s take it back a little with this one. What was your #1 present when you were a kid?
The Lovelocks Boots and Hearts 2015Zoe: I remember getting a pogo ball. Best. Gift. Ever.

Tim: The GT! We went bonkers for those every year.

Bobby: I have a strong memory of a remote control motorcycle with a Jump….

Ali: We were surprised with a trip to Disney World one year. That was super memorable, and such a dream come true for a kid!

Maybe this one will take us back too… do you have a favourite Christmas movie or TV special?
The Lovelocks Boots and Hearts 2015Ali: It’s either “The Holiday” or “Home Alone”. Both just put me in such a festive mood!

Zoe: White Christmas – I watch it every Christmas Eve!

Tim: The Grinch was something we always watched as kids, but Elf is a more recent tradition. Quickly becoming a classic!

Bobby: Christmas Vacation – gets funnier every year!

Last one, and we think we’ve saved the best. What is your favourite celebratory drink when you’re celebrating during the holiday season?
EggnogBobby: I don’t really have a favourite. My kids all LOVE Eggnog but I can’t even be in the same room with it…

Ali: I don’t like egg nog either. Bring on the mulled wine! 😉

Zoe: Definitely not egg nog. Definitely spiked hot chocolate 🙂

Tim: Spiced Rum and Egg Nog! Yum.

Big thank you to Bobby, Ali, Zoe, and Tim for playing along… we wish them all a Merry Christmas.

Merry Christmas to you. Be Awesome!

2015-16 NHL Canadian Country Music Season Preview

The NHL season starts this week with Montreal in Toronto, Vancouver in Calgary, New York in Chicago, and San Jose in Los Angeles… and to get us all ready for hockey we recruited 10 of our own Canadian Country Music All-Stars to give us their preview!

We asked each artist 3 questions (Favourite Team, Why/How Long Have You Loved Them, What Do You Expect This Season) and got some awesome answers.

HUGE thanks are going out to Chad Brownlee, Brett Kissel, Bobby Wills, Lindsay Broughton, Tim Chaisson, David Roberts, Cory Marquardt, Tim Hicks, Petric, and Yoan for playing along with our brand new idea this season. We love that there is so much love for puck in the country music community.

So, have a look and see which singer shares the same NHL team love affair as you – and leave a comment to tell us your favourite team, the story of you loving them, and what you expect from them this season!

2015-16 NHL Preview!

Chad Brownlee

Chad Brownlee NHL Preview 2015What is your favourite NHL team?
Vancouver Canucks

Why / How long have you loved them?
Since I can remember. Growing up in BC with my Dad being a huge Canucks fan made it pretty easy to decide which team to cheer for!

What do you expect from them this season?
I think the changes they made last season was the beginning of something great. This year is simply going to add to the success that I see growing in years to come!

Brett Kissel

Brett Kissel CNE 2015What is your favourite NHL team?

Why / How long have you loved them?
“I’ve literally loved the Oilers since I was born. Interesting story, I was born the day the Oilers won their last Stanley Cup in 1990. My brother thinks I’m a curse to the team, because as long as I’ve been alive, they haven’t won the cup since…”

What do you expect from them this season?
“I truly believe that the Oilers will make the playoffs this year. With all that young star power, I mean, they’ve got to! If Calgary got into the playoffs this past season, then the Oilers NEED to!”

Note: On September 3, 2015 at the CNE in Toronto, Brett gave the crowd a guarantee that the Maple Leafs would make the playoffs this season. Remember that 😉

Bobby Wills

When The Lights Go Down Toronto Bobby Wills-8043What is your favourite NHL team?
Calgary Flames

Why / How long have you loved them?
My favourite team as a little guy was the Bruins as we have Massachusetts roots, but the battle of Alberta pulled me in.

What do you expect from them this season?
A playoff spot, hard to say from there. The west is so competitive it is going to be a dog fight!!

Lindsay Broughton

Lindsay Broughton at the 2015 CMAO Awards.

What is your favourite NHL team?
The Detroit Red Wings

Why / How long have you loved them?
HA! Weeell this isn’t awkward at all! To be quite honest I’m fairly new on the Detroit bandwagon! I was a long time lover, supporter and most often defender of the Leafs (stop laughing!) However I was forced to change my ways, burn the blue clothes, convert and become the enemy when I started dating a player in the Detroit organization about a year and a half ago. Yep, I am the ultimate traitor but if it’s any consolation sometimes I still secretly cheer for the Leafs… shhh..

What do you expect from them this season?
Uhmm a cup? haha..kidding. It’s going to be interesting to see what happens without Babcock being there but obviously I’m excited about the season and have faith that the new changes are going to bring big things. 🙂

Tim Chaisson

Tim Chaisson Lost in the Light Release Party ShowWhat is your favourite NHL team?
Montreal Canadiens!

Why / How long have you loved them?
Well, my father pretty much brainwashed my brothers and I since we were born to love the Habs, so as long as I can remember I guess!

What do you expect from them this season?
I’d love to see a strong play-off season myself! I also think it’s pretty cool that P.K. Subban is giving so much back to the community.

David Roberts of The Washboard Union

David Robertson The Washboard UnionWhat is your favourite NHL team?
Toronto Maple Leafs

Why / How long have you loved them?
Since I was a kid of 6, we had seasons tickets at Maple Leaf Gardens, up in the Blues, Section 29

What do you expect from them this season?
Here are my 2015/2016 predictions:
a) In a Wed Oct 7th press release it will be revealed that The Leafs will work a deal with season ticket holders who will now only pay for winning games.
b) It’s a rebuild year, or decade or whatever the term is for the 49 odd years they have been waiting to win the cup back….
c) Record Producer and world’s biggest Leaf fan GGGarth Richardson will be hired as the new head coach and will guide the team to victory and win the 2015/2016 Stanley Cup aka La Coupe Stanley
d) The Leafs will continue to sell out night after night…Go Leafs Go

My Dad is from Toronto and my grandpa was a big fan. I still picture them in 94-96 Potvin, Clark, Gilmore, Tie Domi and the list goes on

What do you expect from them this season?
They made some pretty big changes and I’m sure they’ll be making more. Not sure what to expect but I see them winning a cup in 20**…

Tim Hicks

Tim Hicks -7769What is your favourite NHL team?
I’m a Leafs guy

Why / How long have you loved them?
It’s sort of ingrained in the culture where I grew up that you must be a Leafs fan or face the consequences lol! Geographically, they’re the closest Canadian team and I always root for home.

What do you expect from them this season?
I’m expecting them to finally throw us a bone! Come on boys!!

Petric Live in StudioWhat is your favourite NHL team?
We’re both huge Jets fans! Toms also has a love for the Detroit Red Wings

Why / How long have you loved them?
We’ve been proud jets fans, even the years they didn’t exist in the league. Those were the years the Red Wings jersey got worn a lot. The year we both started playing hockey the Red Wings won the Stanley Cup, and Stevie Yzerman was Toms all time favourite player.

What do you expect from them this season?
The Jets have a lot of young blood, which may bring some growing pains, but should also bring a lot of exciting hockey. GO JETS GO!

Yoan CNE 2015What is your favourite NHL team?
The Montreal Canadians.

Why / How long have you loved them?
I think Hockey is a part of our culture and heritage and so are the Montreal Canadians. I played hockey for 5 years and my dad has always been a really big fan of the team so we used to watch the games together when I was growing up. The last two years have been so busy for me that I don’t have as much time to follow hockey religiously as I did before but I try to support the team every time I can.

What do you expect from them this season?
I wish them the best and hopefully the Stanley Cup!

When The Lights Go Down Tour Review: Toronto

On Tuesday we hit the Virgin Mobile Mod Club in Toronto to check out Bobby Wills, Jess Moskaluke, and headliner Chad Brownlee on the When The Lights Go Down Tour.

From start to finish everyone had a great time… but it wasn’t just a 2 hour concert, the tour offered a lot more than that for the fans who wanted it!

The When The Lights Go Down Tour VIP Upgrade offers fans a chance to come check out soundcheck, meet & greet with the artists, get some swag and pictures and autographs, and it was a lot of fun to be there with them as it all went down. Chad, Jess and Bobby were all great with the fans, and even put on a little acoustic set together for the small group in the Mod Club.

Highlight of the VIP Experience: Bobby Wills’ cover of Garth Brooks’ classic, The River.

And now, onto the show.

Bobby Wills When The Lights Go Down Toronto-8068Bobby Wills took the stage first, and he did a great job of bringing the crowd into the night and starting the St. Patrick’s Day party.

Wills played a fun set with a big smile on his face. It’s easy to see that he loves what he’s doing up there. And the crowd loved it too. The set included recent singles like Crazy Enough and Never Didn’t Love You from his Crazy Enough album, and threw in a little throwback to his 2012 single, Show Some Respect.

And then he wrapped things up with his most recent release, Undressed, with the help of the night’s next performer, Jess Moskaluke.

Note: After the meet & greet we had a chance to chat with all of the artists and Bobby was quick to mention that he’d love to play Boots & Hearts. Here’s hoping that we see him there in 2016.

When The Lights Go Down Toronto Jess-8074After her duet with Bobby Wills, Saskatchewan’s Jess Moskaluke took over the When The Lights Go Down Tour stage.

Her energy level was fantastic right from the start, and I was a happy guy hearing Good Lovin’ to kick things off. It’s a really fun song that some of Jess’s new fans may not know since it’s not on the Light Up The Night album.

Speaking of the album, Moskaluke did treat the fans to a number of songs from the disc, and they showed her that they’d been listening, singing along en masse to Used, Night We Won’t Forget, Cheap Wine and Cigarettes and the title track, Light Up The Night.

The first time we interviewed Jess none of us knew how huge her 2014 was going to be… and now that we’ve been in touch a few times and seen how crowds respond to her, we won’t be surprised to watch her have more years just like it and bigger.

Unexpected Highlight: Jess threw a cover mash-up in with her set, giving us an awesome showing of Big and Rich’s Fake ID & Meghan Trainor’s Lips are Movin’. We had no idea it was coming, and she knocked it clean out of the park!

Before we get to the headliner, we need to take a second to shout out the band. The 5 dudes up on stage come from all across Canada (Newfoundland to BC) and they did a fantastic job. These same talented men stayed on stage all night, playing and singing backing vocals for all 3 acts – and they never dropped their energy a single inch. Well done boys.

When The Lights Go Down Toronto Chad-8357Last up, headlining his first Canada-wide tour, and totally ready to do so, was Chad Brownlee.

Let’s start at the start… before Brownlee ever took the stage my jaw dropped. While some artists have music to bring them to the stage (Miranda coming out to Beyonce’s Run the World was memorable) Brownlee went a different route. The former Canuck’s draft pick was intro’d by Hockey Night in Canada’s Jim Hughson calling a mix of play-by-play action featuring Chad’s name. It was 100% Canadian, and I loved it.

Also, let’s deal with this too… Chad Brownlee is aggressively handsome. It’s not a hard conclusion to come to, but we did it while he stood on stage, playing for a crowd that was totally into him.

We got a lot of music out of Brownlee’s time on stage. There wasn’t a minute wasted in his set… and in case you were wondering – this is what the set looked like.

  • Smoke In The Rain
  • Sitting On The Hood Of My Car
  • Matches
  • Listen
  • The Fighters
  • Fallin’ Over You.
  • Ed Sheeran Cover: Thinking Out Loud
  • Stay/ Sitting On The Dock Of The Bay
  • Carried Away
  • Where The Party At
  • Just Because
  • Love Me Or Leave Me
  • When The Lights Go Down

And then it was time for the encore… and it was awesome.

I’ll be honest, it took me a minute to recognize the first  track, but as he got closer and closer to the chorus, it clicked… we were treated to a 6 dude rendition of Katy Perry’s Roar… and they nailed it.

But as cool as that was, it wasn’t quite as boss as what came next, and ended the show. The band started to play a few notes, Brownlee started singing and we got a funked up country version of Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars’ smash hit, Uptown Funk. Bobby Wills and Jess Moskaluke came back out to sing and dance along with the final song of the night and the entire Mod Club joined in on the ‘Hot Damn’s and Uptown ‘Funk You Up’s.

Final Verdict: The When The Lights Go Down Tour was a lot of fun and Bobby Wills, Jess Moskaluke and Chad Brownlee put on a great show with the added bonus of the VIP upgrade in the afternoon.

If you’re west of Toronto and you like any of these 3 artists you need to check the Tour’s website to find a tour date near you.

You won’t regret it!

When The Lights Go Down Tour Preview: Chad Brownlee [Interview]

Chad Brownlee GuitarChad Brownlee began his professional life with a stick in his hands and skates on his feet. That was then, this is now.

Brownlee won the 2011 Rising Star Award at the Canadian Country Music Awards, was nominated for Country Album of the Year at the 2013 Juno Awards. And now, Chad Brownlee is headlining his first tour to support his 3rd studio album, The Fighters.

The When The Lights Go Down Tour comes through Toronto next week with a stop at The Mod Club. Brownlee will be joined by Jess Moskaluke and Bobby Wills, in what is we are sure is going to be a fun show. In fact, we’ve been watching the tweets roll in from the first tour stops on the east coast and everyone looks like they’re having a whole lot of fun.

But before the tour rolls into Toronto next week we had a chance to catch up with Chad by email for a little Q&A session to see what’s going on with him, what he’s listening to and what fans can expect when he takes the stage.

And don’t forget, Chad will be performing at Boots & Hearts this summer too! It’s going to be awesome!

Chad Brownlee Boots and Hearts 2013Q. The last time we were able to catch you live was at Boots & Hearts 2013, can you give us a quick recap of what’s been awesome for you since then?

A. Well, I released my 3rd album “The Fighters” in June of 2014, which has gotten a great response from the fans! And a lot of focus and preparation was been put into my “When The Lights Go Down Tour” which is my first headlining experience. I’m pretty fortunate to be at this point in my career so quickly!

Q. And to follow-up on that… how excited are you to be coming back to Boots & Hearts in 2015 at the new venue and with acts like Brad Paisley, Little Big Town and Eric Church on the bill?

A. Extremely excited! Boots has become one of Canada’s biggest festivals in a very short amount of time. When I heard it had to be moved to a bigger venue I wasn’t surprised at all. Everyone involved in this event has done an incredible job. Can’t wait to hit the stage with some of those amazing country artists!

Chad Brownlee The FightersQ. The Fighters is your 3rd full length album release, is there anything you love more about this one than the first 2, or that you’re more proud of? (ex. process, writing, songs, personal involvement, etc) I feel like it shows an evolution of who I am as a writer and artist.

A. There is a fine line between sticking with what works and bringing something new, and I think we found that balance with this record. It’s also got a lot of colour as far as the different emotions and concepts of each song. I wanted to take the listener on a bit of a journey!

Q. Can you give us a hint about the next single coming from the record?

A. “Like wheels on a train I just keep rollin….”

Q. You’re a BC boy and were a Vancouver Canucks draft pick… is there anyone you want to pop a little hockey trash talk out to… Me and my Habs, Tim Hicks and his Maple Leafs, Brett Kissel’s Oilers, everyone who’s loving The Predators in Smashville?

Chad Brownlee Vancouver Canucks ProfileA. I’ve got no beef with the Preds. Whenever I’m down in Nashville I usually like to catch a game and find myself quietly cheering for them (If they aren’t playing the Canucks of course). And you can see my opinion of Brett Kissel if you type “No Silver Cup” into YouTube. It’s my response to his “fairly sarcastic” song he wrote about the Canucks after the 2011 Stanley Cup run. As for Tim Hicks; he is on fire! Unlike his Leafs… I kid (sort of), but in all honesty I cheer for both Brett and Tim… when our teams aren’t playing each other of course…

Q. If we got our hands on your playlist, who would we find in your Top 3 most played artists?

A. I just went and looked…It’s 1. Jack Johnson 2. John Mayer and 3. Holly Williams. I’m a pretty chill guy behind the scenes.

Q. In 50 words or less, what can fans expect when you take the stage for them on the When The Lights Go Down Tour?

Chad Brownlee On Stage 2013A. I feel like this tour has been 6 years in the making. And the 3 months leading up to it felt like the fastest 3 months of my life. My team and I spent a lot of time preparing for this tour because we wanted to bring the fans something a little different; some new covers, unique moments, and a side of me they haven’t seen. So they can expect all of those things and hopefully leave wanting more. If there is one lesson I learned from hockey, it’s to leave it all out on the ice. I have the same mentality now, but instead I pour it all out on the stage. My fans deserve the very best of me.

Big thanks to Chad for playing along. We can’t wait to see him on stage at the Mod Club next week.

When The Lights Go Down Tour Preview: Jess Moskaluke [Interview]

Jess Moskaluke Light Up The NightJess Moskaluke is on fire!

The Saskatchewan songstress had an amazing 2014 and is gearing up for a HUGE 2015. After taking home the Canadian Country Music Association Award for Female Vocalist of the Year in September, Moskaluke has added 2 Juno nominations for Country Album of the Year and Breakthrough Artist of the Year.

She also debuted a new video this week, with Night We Won’t Forget currently sitting exclusively on – and on March 4th she’ll kick off the When The Lights Go Down tour with Bobby Wills and Chad Brownlee. It’s going to be a busy month with a pile of shows from PEI to BC, and we bet they’re going to be a blast.

Before Jess hits the road, we caught up with her for a little Q&A catch-up that looks back and forward. Have a look!

Jess Moskaluke 2015Q. We had our first interview with you last March – a lot has happened since then. On a scale of 1 to 10, how wild has the ride been, and have you had a chance to really step back and take it all in?

A. I would have to say it’s been about a 16!! I have learned and experienced so much more than I ever thought possible. And it’s so surreal that I don’t know if I ever will fully be able to take it all in. It probably will never feel real!

Q. 2014 was a good year for women in country music, especially in Canada. Do you feel like we’re turning a corner away from bro country saturation and into more balance on country radio?

A. I do think we are turning a corner. I have to say, I’m so proud of Canadian radio and its listeners for allowing this change to happen. There are too many talented women out there that work their tails off to breakthrough. We need to hear more of them.. And it’s only just getting better!

Jess Moskaluke CCMA 2014Q. It’s been 5 months since your name was called as Female Vocalist of the Year at the Canadian Country Music Association Awards… can you tell us what that felt like, and how great it was to have your family and boyfriend there with you?

A. Oh man. I always dreamed of the day that my name might be called.. Somehow it never plays out anything like you dreamed (thank God… I always thought I would be a blubbering mess!). I was so elated my family was there to experience it all with me. There’s just no way I could have recreated that excitement if I had to tell them about it after! I remember watching the news the next day with my mom and they had some clips of me walking the green carpet and at the awards show looking all fancy. And I sat there with her in my housecoat with my hair in a messy bun and she looked at me and said, “Are we sure thats really the same girl that’s sitting here right now?” Haha so they definitely got to see a different side of my world during awards weekend!

Jess Moskaluke Night We Won't Forget Video Behind The ScenesQ. The video for Night We Won’t Forget just hit screens and when we chatted right after the shoot you said it was a lot of fun. Can you give us any hints about which song might be getting the next official video?

A. Oh man, yes! It was so much fun! As for hints, I would love to. But it’s too soon to know! 🙂

Q. We love to ask this one, if we could sneak a peek at your playlist, who would we find in your Top 3 most played artists?

A. Hmmm… That’s a great question. I’m actually really digging Taylor’s new record lately. I also got a sneak peak of some of Tim Hicks’ stuff he’s working on and it’s amazing! I’ve also got tons of Dallas Smith on my phone.

Jess Moskaluke On StageQ. In 50 words or less, what can fans expect when you take the stage on the When The Lights Go Down Tour?

A. Energy. Surprises. Collabs. And lots of jokes at Bobby’s expense (heehee!).

Big thanks to Jess for playing along. We can’t wait to catch up again on March 17th in Toronto at Adelaide Hall.

If you want to catch Ms. Moskaluke, Bobby Wills and Chad Brownlee on the When The Lights Go Down Tour, check the dates and get your tickets!

When The Lights Go Down Tour Preview: Bobby Wills [Interview]

Bobby Wills Bobby Wills is a hard working, hard playing, Canadian country boy in a cowboy hat – and he’s ready to hit the road!

Wills, the 2013 Canadian Country Music Association’s Rising Star winner, and 2-time Male Vocalist of the Year nominee, is part of the 3-headed When The Lights Go Down tour with Jess Moskaluke and headliner, Chad Brownlee. It’s going to be a crazy time, with 26 dates between March 4th and April 4th… including an awesome 8 day in a row stretch that makes us really appreciate the hard work that these musicians are putting in.

Bobby Wills will likely be showcasing songs from his most recent album, 2014’s Crazy Enough – but if you’ve got favourites from 2010’s Man With No Past and 2012’s If It Was That Easy, there’s a chance that you’re going to hear them too. We have a feeling that Mr. Wills is going to put on a helluva set to get the crowd into the show.

Big thanks to Bobby for catching up with us before the tour – we can’t wait to see him in Toronto on March 17th at Adelaide Hall. Enjoy the Q&A…

Bobby Wills CCMA AwardsQ. Music has been a big journey in your life. Where do you feel you’re at in your journey now, and what do you think is coming next?

A. Journey is such a good word for it!! The journey to date has been a dream come true, I am hopeful that it continues to grow. Lots of work to do, but getting to play music is all I have ever wanted to do!

Q. Crazy Enough is your 3rd album release since 2010, that’s a helluva pace. Can we expect another album in 2016, or are you going to take some time to tour, write, and take things a little slower this time?

A. I am always writing and working on new stuff, so I would expect you will see new music from us soon. We are busy touring from now until fall all over North America, but we will carve out time to make new music. It’s why I love my job!

Bobby Wills GuitarQ. This is also your first album and nationwide tour with MDM, how has it been working with the new label and artists like Chad Brownlee and Jess Moskaluke?

A. MDM has been such a good fit for us, we are fortunate to be part of what going on there. Getting to tour with Chad and Jess and the whole MDM “Road Fam” is such a great opportunity! I can’t wait.

Q. If we caught a look at your current playlist, who would we find in your top 3 most played artists.

A. Garth Brooks, Keith Whitley and George Strait – as of today (it would probably be different in a week)

Bobby Wells On StageQ. In 50 words or less, tell the fans what they can expect from your set when they check out the When The Lights Go Down Tour?

A. High Energy – come prepared to dance and sing along!!! It’s going to be an absolute BLAST!!!
