Something To Believe In: JJ Shiplett at Boots & Hearts 2017

Saturday was a busy day for JJ Shiplett, with 2 performances at Boots & Hearts, and a hang out with us before the music began.

If you aren’t familiar with JJ, now is the time for you to start listening to his well toned, gravely voiced redhead. On both the main stage and the SiriusXM popup in the VIP, JJ showed the Boots & Hearts fans what he brings to the party.

On the main stage, early in the afternoon with the sun high in the sky, JJ came out with the band and rolled through some of our favourite tracks from his Something To Believe In album. And as the songs played we saw fans singing and dancing – and JJ was happy to shout out the people in the crowd that he saw wearing JJ Shiplett t-shirts.

While we were hanging out before the show we asked for an update since our last chat back in November… and there’s been a bunch going on for JJ.

1) He got married (so congrats again to him on that).
2) His honeymoon starts Sunday.
3) He’s played shows in Toronto, Cavendish Beach, Calgary Stampede, and more.
4) He’s been writing songs for a second album, with special attention being paid to creating tracks that come together to make the best album he has in him, and that are fun to play on stage for him and the band and the fans.

Boots and Hearts 2017 - JJ Shiplett

We’ve had the opportunity to see JJ Shiplett perform in small clubs and the big stage, and we’ve talked to him about connecting with the fans that show up. He thrives off of that vibe, and loves the way a small room can feel when the music is hitting everyone – and he’s looking forward to feeling that in his bones at big festival shows at Boots & Hearts. And while we didn’t talk to him after the show, we did see people connecting with JJ’s music on Saturday. And we saw the singing along that we love to see, and that he’s still sometimes amazed by.

With the band killing it behind him, JJ had the opportunity to truly show off what he has created with his first album. The voice, the style, and everything that makes him unique in the current country music climate were on display – and we’re happy for him that he got that chance.

Shiplett told us that he knows nothing is guaranteed to him or anyone else in this business, so he’s happy to work hard and strike while the iron is hot. With that in mind, don’t be surprised if you see more shows and tour dates and album planning announced after JJ and his wife celebrate their well deserved honeymoon!

Calgary Stampede 2017: Jess Moskaluke Photo Review

Jess Moskaluke is a Canadian country superstar. With three consecutive Female Artist of the Year wins at the Canadian Country Music Association Awards, she’s proved it. And on Tuesday, July 11, she hit the Nashville North Stage at the Calgary Stampede to show it in person.

I remember seeing her years ago in a small theatre in Ottawa, Ontario – and seeing how much she’s grown and achieved since then is insane!

105 Years Strong: 2017 Calgary Stampede Preview

Words cannot explain how excited I am to be a part of the Calgary Stampede again this year! And if you’ve been following the weather forecast, like myself, you already know it’s going to be a lot better than last year! But don’t worry about the 30+ temperatures the next two weeks, there’s tons of amazing food trucks with cold treats that will keep you cool throughout your stay!

I don’t even know where to start with all the jaw dropping, mouthwatering flavours that the midway has to offer. I am most excited to try the Double Bacon Mac N’ Cheese Dog, Clam Chowder Poutine, Deep Fried Jell-O, Maple Walnut Cotton Candy, Unicorn White Hot Chocolate and The Chili Lime Popcorn Shrimp Perogies! It’s a good thing there’s so much to do at The Stampede because I’m going to have to walk off all the taste testing i’ll be doing.

Since its Canada’s 150th birthday this year The Stampede has added even more musical acts to the powerful lineup! The Coca Cola stage, I believe, will be the biggest crowd pleaser of them all. Over 30 insanely talented bands/solo artists will be taking over the stage through the two weeks.

My top ten acts who I can’t wait to see are…

Ria Mae
Nelly Furtado
Marianas Trench
Alessia Cara
July Talk
Michela Sheedy
Jonathan Roy
Theory of a Deadman
Sabrina Carpenter

All of these performs are so different one another, their style, sound and stage presence, I cannot wait to capture it.

Another stage that I absolutely loved last year was The Nashville North Tent. This tent is full of cold drinks and two stepping until the early morning! Over 40 entertaining acts will keep you dancing the night away, such as; The Dungarees, The Cadillac Three, Endless Summer, Cam, Doc Walker, Jess Moskaluke, The Dead South, Cold Creek County, Tristan Horncastle, Jojo Mason, Chris Buck Band and Meaghan Patrick just to name a few. One act I am particularly excited to see is Cam, I remember hearing her first song on the radio Burning House and automatically falling in love with her soft effortless voice, since then I have become a huge fan! And have you seen her hair? She has to have the most beautiful hair in all of country music.

JoJo Mason BH5 Boots and Hearts 2016Meghan Patrick BH5 Boots and Hearts 2016

One thing I love so much about the lineup this year is the diverse music varieties. Whether you like rock, pop, alternative, folk, country, soul, acoustic or EDM, there is something for everyone.

I have to say this year after viewing The Saddledome’s lineup I might have screamed like a little girl. After scrolling through the lineup list my heart dropped into my stomach when I saw Usher was coming as one of the main headliners. I couldn’t believe it! I remember forcing my poor father to constantly play his cds in the car when I was younger and now I finally get to see him live and singing every song… sadly dad won’t be joining. I can’t wait to see what Usher brings to the stage, I truly believe he’s going to put on a show that we won’t forget.

A couple of other events I am extremely excited to see this year are the chuckwagon races, bull riding and the incredible Transalta Grandstand show that ends the evening with fireworks lighting up the whole sky! If you enjoy fireworks, you need to make sure this is on your “must do” list because I have never seen such a spectacular light show in my life. I am filled with so much excitement and adrenaline I don’t know if i’ll be able to sleep before the kick off Stampede parade. I encourage those looking for a new experience or wanting a fun adventure to remember forever, to come on down to Calgary and experience these lifetime memories The Stampede has to offer! This city is incredible and I can’t wait to show everyone all the photographs and memories we make this year!

5 Reasons to See Meghan Patrick Live, Summer 2016!

Meghan Patrick is one of the brightest rising stars in Canadian country music. If you’ve seen any of the coverage we’ve had of Meghan over the last two years, you know how we feel about that… spoiler: we think it’s great.

Meghan Patrick The Phoenix CMW 2016Meghan’s debut album, Grace & Grit is available now on CD and on iTunes & Google Play, and if you don’t have it yet, we recommend picking it up because that’s going to make seeing her live a lot more fun.

Ms. Patrick will be all over the place this summer, appearing at CMT Music Fest, Boots & Hearts, the Calgary Stampede, Cavendish Beach Music Festival, Ottawa’s RBC Bluesfest, Peterborough MusicFest, Murillo Country Fest, and more… which means you have a lot of chances to catch her up on stage, which we highly recommend.

In fact, we recommend it so much that we have 5 reasons to break down for you right now!

5 Reasons to See Meghan Patrick Live, Summer 2016!

1. The Music

Meghan Patrick Grace and Grit Album ArtIf you haven’t taken the chance to sit down and listen to Grace & Grit yet, it’s time for you to get on that!

The debut single, Bow Chicka Wow Wow, is already a favourite with live crowds and Canadian radio – and the title track is poised to do the same thing for fans across the country with more play and the new video (check it out at the bottom of this post).

Plus, if you’re lucky, Meghan will play her cover of Dolly Parton’s Jolene, and you can enjoy the hell out of that too!

2. She’s a Cherry Bomb

To borrow a line from our pals the River Town Saints, she ain’t a fire cracker, she’s a cherry bomb!

Meghan’s voice, song writing, and performances will make her a star… but her look on stage is going to make a lot of people take notice too. Is that more important than her talent? Heck no! But it doesn’t hurt 😉

3. IT

the-stone-sparrows-meghan-boots-and-hearts-2013We’d love to tell that we knew Meghan had “it” the 1st time we saw her at Boots & Hearts in 2013, but that might be over the top. What we can tell you is that she showed us her chops on the mic, guitar, and stage when she fronted Stone Sparrows then… and she continues to do that now as a breakout solo artist.

If you haven’t seen her live yet, you’ll see “it” this summer when you do!

4. The Band

Meghan is a solo artist, but she isn’t up on stage alone. Her entire band is talented and help to put on a hell of a show for every crowd they play for.

We especially have a soft spot for Ollie on the fiddle/guitar/everything he plays, that dates back to his days with Meghan as part of the Stone Sparrows.

5. Bow Chicka Wow Wow

Meghan Patrick Boots and Hearts KX Hot Shots Showcase CMW 2016 Photo Credit Ray Williams - @APerfectPixelWe started with music, and we’ll end with it as well.

Bow Chicka Wow Wow has become a party anthem that the ladies love (the men do too). And when the ladies in the crowd are singing, dancing, and stomping along to the music, you know you’re in for a great show!

Check out Meghan’s website for all of her your dates and locations this summer and beyond.
