Country Music’s Sexiest Men, 2017

The internet is buzzing with rumours that Blake Shelton will be named People Magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive for 2017.

We aren’t here to tell you that they made the wrong choice, but we are here to put a spotlight on some of the other sexy men in country music.

In the last couple of years we’ve had the chance to see these men perform on stage, and as great as they are with the microphone in their hands, they elicit a whole lot of cheers for their look up there on stage.

Have a look at our list and pics of Blake Shelton and our 10 more sexy country music men, and leave a comment to tell us who you think is tops OR who you think we missed.

Blake Shelton

Blake Shelton-Country Thunder 2017 Blake Shelton is one of the biggest stars in the world today. Between his regular appearances at the top of the country music charts and his seat in the spinning chair on The Voice, he’s everywhere. And as the 41 year old Oklahoman adds more salt and pepper to his look, the sexier he seems to get.

Luke Bryan

City Turned Country: Chad Brownlee and Leaving Thomas at the 2017 CNE

Country took over the city for a couple of hours on Saturday night at the Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto as Chad Brownlee and Leaving Thomas took to the legendary bandshell stage. The MDM Recordings artists took their turns belting out country hits and entertaining the assembled crowd.

Chad Brownlee - CNE 2017

Leaving Thomas opened the show with Annika and Bryton taking another chance to introduce their live show to eager country music fans. The upstart duo didn’t waste their opportunity, charming the crowd with their banter and energy, and showing off the chops that have them on a lot of Canadian country music playlists and must watch lists.

Their eight song set included the duo’s first two radio singles, Waiting Kind Of Girl and Best Adventure, and also gave the Toronto crowd a listen to their upcoming single, Blame It On The Neon, coming to your local country radio station on September 8.

Leaving Thomas - CNE 2017

Country music fans will be hearing more and more from Leaving Thomas, y’all should be ready for it.

🎤 Best Adventure
🎤 Blame It On The Neon
🎤 Shame On Me
🎤 From This Valley (The Civil Wars)

🎤 Waiting Kind Of Girl

Chad Brownlee, one of Canadian country music’s biggest stars, headlined the night, playing a full 17 song set, and showing all of his leading man skills on the stage.

The B.C. native played songs from the start of his career through to his most recent release, Out Of The Blue, watching and listening as fans sang and danced along, and waved their arms in the air at his direction. He held them in his hands, and they welcomed it – and it was fantastic to see. And as improbable as it might seem, the cheers and singing got louder and louder as the night went on.

Chad Brownlee - CNE 2017

Things may have been loudest when it got quietest on stage. Brownlee stood front and centre, solo with his acoustic guitar, and strummed as he sang a mashup of Thinkin’ Out Loud and Happy Man, and the crowd sang along, and everyone loved it in one of those very special moments that live music provides.

Toronto may not yet be the hotbed of country music that Calgary or Nashville are, but shows like Saturday night with Chad Brownlee showing his ability to make fans sing along to radio hits they know and love, continue to foster the growing community of country fans in the city, and will bring more shows to us in the future.

Be ready to be there and be ready to love the heck out of it!

Out Of The Blue: Chad Brownlee at Boots & Hearts 2017

Chad Brownlee is a Canadian country music star, and on Saturday we got to catch up with him, and see him perform twice at Boots & Hearts 2017!

Country music fans had two chances to catch Chad Brownlee on Saturday as he took the main stage for his full set, and made an appearance on the SiriusXM stage earlier in the afternoon. And both times the fans in front of him sang and cheered for the B.C. boy as he showed them why he’s a legit nominee for the 2017 Canadian Country Music Association Fans’ Choice Award.

Boots and Hearts 2017 - Chad Brownlee

Early in the afternoon, before Brownlee started singing for the fans, we caught up with him for some photos and a chat. We learned that there’s new music coming soon, with songs written about his own life (both positive and the opposite of that), and a new album, his fifth, planned for an early 2018 release. But before that, the CCMA Awards weekend is coming up in Saskatoon, and that’s a big deal. We talked about the weekend, the parties, having the chance to catch up with industry friends that you may not have seen for the last year, and trying to find time for sleep – and trust us, all three of those things are important, but the last one often gets ignored.

On stage, Chad Brownlee looked anything but tired. Starting his main stage set with Hood Of My Car and rolling through 14 more after that, he owned the Boots & Hearts faithful. The singing was strong at every opportunity, we saw dancing from the front row to the back of the field, and the cheers rang loud for him.

This wasn’t Chad’s first Boots & Hearts experience, so he knew what to expect when he got out there. But we wanted to know about more shows this summer, so we asked for highlights, and he told us that Cavendish Beach Music Festival was great, and that it was awesome to be back at Nashville North and the Calgary Stampede for the fourth time. And if the crowds there were anything like the crowd he had on Saturday, we can see why they’d be highlights.

Boots and Hearts 2017 - Chad Brownlee

Note: We took Chad back a couple of years and asked him for the craziest thing that happened during pre-show floor hockey on the When The Lights Go Down Tour in 2015… and he told us a story about playing in Calgary and asking Bobby Wills for a one-time pass. Now, Chad told us that he was feeling pretty comfortable in his shot (which he should), and his ability to pick the corner on the small shinny net. However, his shot sailed on him and smashed an empty glass water pitcher. Now, we haven’t talked to Bobby about this, so we don’t want to blame his pass… but we’ll let you make your own judgements on the reason.

We’ll be seeing Chad Brownlee again soon as he takes the stage at the 2017 Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto on Saturday, August 26 with Leaving Thomas. If you’re going to be near Toronto that weekend, we’d highly recommend that you come down to the fair for that.

Boots and Hearts 2017 - Chad Brownlee

We know, that at that show, just like Saturday’s Boots & Hearts show, there will be singing along from the crowd when Brownlee plays his hits. When we brought that up he told us that it’s still surreal, and while he may be more experienced more than he once was, it still gives him butterflies to be up on stage. And he says that if those butterflies ever stop showing up, it’ll probably be time to hang ‘em up.

It makes sense to hear him say it, but we’re hoping that moment doesn’t come any time soon. And based on the show that he put on Saturday, and the reaction from the fans, they’re hoping to see a lot more of Chad Brownlee for a long time.

Laugh When You Lie: Dan Davidson, Live in Toronto

Dan Davidson may be becoming known for his wacky videos, but country radio and country music fans know that he’s the real deal, And he’s just getting started.

We met up with the former Tupelo Honey rocker at Parkdale’s Rod, Gun & Barbers during a stop in Toronto to talk about his music, DIY videos, dad life and more.

As Davidson’s current single Say We Did rolls through country radio, CMT, and streaming services across the country (and beyond) the singer/songwriter continues to put in work on new music and his live show.

We asked about an album and Dan told us that he’s be perfectly happy to be a singles guy. Writing, recording, releasing and playing a new song and then moving onto the next one… but he also understands the importance of an album, and told us that there will be an EP release this fall after the CCMA awards in Saskatoon.

With two nominations (Rising Star Award, Songwriter of the Year + Video Director of the Year: Travis Nesbitt for Davidson’s Found) at this year’s awards, Dan Davidson is quickly making sure his name has been added in the up and coming crop of country music talent in Canada. And with bangers like Found and Barn Burner leading the way, he is definitely making it easy to put his name in that group.

Dan Davidson - Rod, Gun and Barbers Parkdale

We would have been foolish not to ask Davidson about the video for Say We Did. The fan favourite features a DIY construction of the Starship Enterprise’s bridge in Dan’s garage… with costumes to complete the look. He told us that the build took about two days, and was a lot of fun. Added to his previous videos, the reputation as a dude who has fun with this part of the process is becoming more solidified – and he’s happy to be that guy, and not just another dude standing in a field or on a river bank to shoot a country video.

He also told us that his indie status allows him to come up with these kinda ridiculous ideas without worrying about anyone telling him that he can’t. And he loves that freedom.

When he’s not on the road, Dan Davidson is probably at home having tea parties or playing in the sprinkler with his little girls. It’s easy to tell when you talk to him that dad time is important to him and he truly loves it. And while he’s not sure his girls understand what dad does (it all seems like a lot of playing dress up and singing songs with his friends), we’re sure they’ll figure it out sooner than later.

As we hung out by the pool table at the back of Rod, Gun & Barbers, we hit the subject of the Canadian Country Music scene and Dan echoed what we hear so often, that it’s a good place to be. He told us about the supportive feel that flows from artist to artist. And he shouted out artists like Brett Kissel, Dallas Smith, and Chad Brownlee who he’s toured with and given him their time along the way.

Dan Davidson - Rod, Gun and Barbers Parkdale

We also talked about the country music fans, and how cool it’s been for him to see them cheering and singing along when he takes the stage all over Canada. We saw it in person this spring at Boots & Bourbon during Canadian Music Week, and the assembled mass of music lovers that night certainly got into it. They sang along, danced and whooped it up – showing Davidson that his tracks had travelled from the west to Ontario, and were working.

He told us about not being sure if anyone would know who he was while on tour with Chase Rice… and then being blown away by the fans in London as they popped for him and his songs. And with more music coming for those country fans, we’re betting that those reactions are going to continue – and his surprise at them should fade.

Dan Davidson - Rod, Gun and Barbers Parkdale

While we had Dan Davidson for photos and hangs, he pulled out his guitar and played a sad one for us… with haircuts in the background and Parkdale’s Queen Street West in the far background, we were pulled in.

Plugged in on stage, or on a stool next to a pool table, Dan Davidson is one to watch.

Stay tuned for new music, show announcements and more from Dan… it’s coming soon.

And press play now for a special live performance of Laugh When You Lie, recorded at Rod, Gun & Barbers on Queen Street West in Parkdale, Toronto.

Boots & Hearts 2017 Day-to-Day Lineup Announcement!

We’re closing in on 3 months away from Boots & Hearts 2017 at Burl’s Creek Event Park… and with seven new names added to the lineup this morning, it feels like we’re nearing the full list of performers.

And adding to that is the announcement of the day-to-day lineups for this year’s festival!

Yes, we now know who we’re going to see on which day. And yes, there are more details to come, telling us who will play on the main stage, who will be on the front porch stage, and what time we’ll be seeing everyone… but this is a huge start to the planning process, and amps up the excitement for each day of August 10 through 13.

Let’s start at the start, with the Thursday night Coors Banquet Kick Off Party, and go through the weekend!

And, for each day we’ll key in on a couple of names (headliners not included) that we think you should be ready to watch… and enjoy!

Ready?

Thursday, August 10 – Coors Banquet Kick Off Party

Doc Walker
Vanessa Marie Carter
and more…

This one is easy… both Doc Walker and Vanessa Marie Carter are going to be awesome. But after seeing 5 acts on stage last year during the kick off party, we’re waiting to see who else gets added here!

Friday, August 11

Keith Urban
Dan + Shay
Frankie Ballard
Kiefer Sutherland
Drake White & The Big Fire
Brooke Eden
Endless Summer
Jessica Mitchell
Andrew Hyatt
Leaving Thomas
Sykamore

Ugh, so this is not as easy… Drake White & The Big Fire are awesome, if you haven’t seen them before, you need to make your way to the stage for them. And if we’re going to pick more, which we have to do, we’re highlighting Jessica Mitchell, Andrew Hyatt, and upstart duo Leaving Thomas.

Saturday, August 12

Brantley Gilbert
Eli Young Band
Chad Brownlee
Tucker Beathard
Aubrie Sellers
Lindi Ortega
JJ Shiplett
The Abrams
Jesse Gold
Nice Horse

We all know how great Chad Brownlee is, so let’s skip him and move to JJ Shiplett and The Abrams. We’re looking forward to both of these sets, and can’t wait for more country music fans to hear their music.

Sunday, August 13

Luke Bryan
Brett Eldridge
Jess Moskaluke
Cold Creek County
Midland
Delta Rae
Dani Strong
Alee
Kelly Prescott
Colt Walker

Last day, and it’s still not easy. If you haven’t seen Alee yet, go listen to her brand new record and then get ready to see her on stage… and you are not going to want to miss Midland. Those Texas boys are good, and funny, and we’re willing to bet that they’re going to kill it on the big stage.

So there you go… this is who we’ll see each day at Boots & Hearts 2017. Now, get ready to be even more excited every day as we get closer.

And stay tuned for contests, interviews, previews and more!

Boots & Hearts 2017 Lineup Announcement: Chad Brownlee, Jess Moskaluke, Eli Young Band, and more!

Boots & Hearts is back with a big announcement today… with 20 new names added to the 2017 festival lineup.

Some of these artists we’ve seen a bunch, some we’ve never seen at all, and that makes us pretty freakin’ excited for August 10-13, 2017.

Get yourself ready, this is getting big.

Today’s Announcement Includes…

Chad Brownlee
We are happy campers to see this Canadian headliner added to the Boots & Hearts lineup. Chad isn’t new to the festival, but he has new music to share since the last time he hit the B&H stage.

We can’t wait to see Chad up there, with the entire crowd singing along to his radio hits!

Chad Brownlee Boots and Hearts 2015

Eli Young Band
If you were looking for a name you knew, this should be it! The Eli Young Band are sure to bring a bunch of energy, talent, and smooth sounding songs to the Boots & Hearts stage when they play their set.

We don’t know which day we’ll see them, but it really doesn’t matter. It’s gonna be good.

Frankie Ballard
Frankie’s back! Mr. Ballard played Boots & Hearts in 2015, and now he’s coming back to do it again. We expect the crowd to be bigger and louder, and we expect that Frankie Ballard will be ready for it.

Get ready to sing loud when he plays Cigarette and Sunshine & Whiskey.

Jess Moskaluke
YES! Ms. Moskaluke is still the top of the heap when it comes to Canadian women in country music. Her third consecutive CCMA win for Female Artist of the Year should tell you that.

Jess has been on the small stage twice in her Boots & Hearts career – the last time playing the kick-off party. This year we’re expecting to see her on the main stage, playing for some very excited country music fans.

Jess Moskaluke Trackside Fest 2016

Kiefer Sutherland
Yes, that Kiefer Sutherland. If you haven’t listened to Kiefer’s 2016 album, Down In A Hole, give it a listen now (click here to listen on Spotify) and get ready for his stage performance.

This isn’t the first Hollywood star to play the festival… year 1 attendees will remember Kevin Costner getting it done.

Tucker Beathard
We saw Tucker last year at a small showcase in Toronto… and after seeing him sit with his guitar and sing, we can’t wait to see the full show when he’s plugged in with the band.

His star is rising, you’ve probably heard Rock On, and you should go listen to Momma and Jesus to get yourself ready.

Tucker Beathard - The Rivoli

Drake White and the Big Fire
We saw Drake White last summer… and the dude is a lot of fun on stage. He sounds great and he brings a love for doing what he does when he’s up there. And he’s got a great hat.

This will be a sing and drink and dance along set.

CMT Music Fest - Drake White & The Big Fire

Brooke Eden
This Florida powerhouse has been on a ton of “ones to watch” lists in the last 2 years, and now we’re going to get to hear in person why she’s landed on all of them.

Boots & Hearts is bringing girl power to the stage. And we’re into it.

Cold Creek County
Canadian country fans already know these boys… but if you haven’t seen them yet, this is a great opportunity. They bring as much energy as anyone in the game when they step on stage. And they fill the stage with dudes and sound when they get to playing.

Be ready, this one is going to get loud.

Aubrie Sellers
They call her a Texas/Nashville hybrid… and we can get behind that. Sellers will be making her Boots & Hearts debut – which means a whole lot of fans to grab. And we’re sure she’ll be up to it.

Get ready for this 20something to show you what she’s got.

Lindi Ortega
Lindi Ortega is an underrated add to this list. With all kinds of critical acclaim, and fans who absolutely love her, Ortega is going to be great at Boots & Hearts.

Her signature sound and style are going to present some awesome “wow” moments for new fans this summer.

Endless Summer
Clint and Bob Moffat may never have been names that country fans thought they’d see on a festival lineup… but here they are. Endless Summer has been putting in work to show their country chops and build their fanbase. And, they’re super nice guys who can truly play and sing.

The boys announced online that they will be handling some hosting duties on the weekend as well – so be ready to see them on stage more than once.

CCMA Awards 2016 Strut Social House Endless Summer

Midland
They hype is legit when it comes to Midland. You may have seen other country artists talking about how much they’re into what these guys are bringing… and if you haven’t, we can tell you that we trust their judgement.

We don’t know where these new comers will land on the schedule, but we’ll be there to listen.

JJ Shiplett
We had a feeling that JJ would be making the trip to Boots & Hearts this summer to share the new music from Something To Believe In, and we’re very happy that he’s going to have that chance.

Be ready for a sing along and grab a beer, this is gonna be good.

The Abrams
The Abrams have been rising stars for the last little while… and their single, Champion, has been heard by a lot of people. The boys opened for Brett Kissel on the Ice, Snow & 30 Below tour – and got a shout out to us from Brett during Canadian Country Music Week 2016.

We’re expecting some energy with this one – to go along with a great sound.

Jessica Mitchell
Thank Goodness! We love this talented young woman, and the small taste of her that Boots & Hearts fans got on the SiriusXM stage just wasn’t enough. If you only know Workin’ On Whiskey, please go listen to her EP (click here to listen on Spotify) and get ready.

Prepare for jokes, songs, and feelings when Jessica Mitchell gets on stage at B&H.

Jessica Mitchell at The Horseshoe Toronto Jazz Festival 2016

Dani Strong
Dani is a hard working, talented country artist – and we’re happy that she’s going to get this chance to play at Boots & Hearts. We’ve had the chance to see her play on a couple of stages over the last 2 years, and we’re sure she’ll bring the same love to the stage this summer.

Be ready for a good time, it’s gonna happen.

Kelly Prescott
Kelly is on the rise. Featured as December 2016’s CMAO artist of the month, she’s been working hard, playing hard, and showing a whole lot of people that she’s got what it takes to play with the big kids.

We’re looking for energy, great songs, and Kelly Prescott working hard again to show new listeners that she’s one to watch.

Andrew Hyatt
We like Andrew a lot. Can’t lie. He’s a good dude who plays good music, builds all kinds of woodshop projects when he’s got the time – and sent us a hilarious Christmas wish to share last year.

You might not think you know Andrew Hyatt, but be ready to sing along to MGR (Me And A Girl And A Radio) when he plays it loud.

CMT Music Fest - Andrew Hyatt

Jesse Gold
Another up and comer, Jesse will be looking to show the country fans at Boots & Hearts that he belongs and that they should be listening. And we think he will. Be ready for all kinds of effort and passion for the music when he’s playing.

You won’t be disappointed.

and more…

Stay tuned for more from Boots & Hearts 2017 – we can’t wait to hear what the next news is going to be… but we know we’re going to have contests, fun info, and more to share.

Waiting Kind Of Girl: Introducing Leaving Thomas [Q&A]

In late November 2016, Leaving Thomas (Annika Odegard and Bryton Udy) took a big step towards their country music goals when they signed with MDM Recordings. In the month since their signing they’ve worked to release their debut single, Waiting Kind Of Girl, to Canadian country radio and film a music video to go along with it.

The duo have also been busy on an Alberta radio tour, they made a trip to Toronto to hang out with the rest of the MDM roster, and they took a little time for a Q&A with us!

Annika and Bryton have both been making music for years. But coming together to form Leaving Thomas has been the step that has brought them to where they are right now – and will take them on their next steps, wherever they may lead.

Congrats to Leaving Thomas on their new single, which you can request at your local country radio station now, and thank you from us for playing along with our questions.

Note: We’d also like to thank Leaving Thomas for sending us their Merry Christmas message that we were able to include in our Happy Holidays post!

Check out the Q&A and the video Annika and Bryton released to learn a little more about one of Canada’s newest country radio duos.

Q. There has to be a story behind your name, right? Is Thomas a guy that really needed to be left? Is Thomas a place? Tell us please!

Annika: Well, originally when Bryton and I started performing together, we discovered that people had a very difficult time pronouncing our names (Bryton and Annika) correctly! However, we really wanted to have our names be part of our band name so we found a way to incorporate our middle names!

Bryton: Yeah! When we were tossing around potential band names the one that stuck, obviously, was Leaving Thomas because my middle name is Thomas and Annika’s is Liv, pronounced “Leave”. So that’s pretty much the story, there was never a Thomas that either of us ever physically left like some people think!

Q. Can you tell us about the emotions and reactions you went through when you found out that you were officially joining the MDM Recordings family?

B: We were thrilled! It was almost surreal to the point that it didn’t really sink in until we spent a weekend in Toronto where we were hanging out with the rest of the artists and the team!

A: After our trip to Toronto in December, we are even more excited for what 2017 has in store with such a great team behind us!

Q. It’s not going to be easy, but can you pick the MDM artist that you would most like to record a song with?

A: This is a tough one! For me, I would say performing with Jess (Moskaluke) would be on the top of my list because she is such a vocal powerhouse. I think the three of us performing together would be EXPLOSIVE!!!

B: That really is tough… I think it would be really cool to write a hockey song with Chad (Brownlee) someday, seeing as we both played at a pretty high level! It would be fun to record a song with any of the MDM artists though! They are all amazing!

Q. The single, Waiting Kind Of Girl, being released to radio on Christmas day has got to be a pretty great present, yes? Best ever?

A: Well, we would say so! But we may be biased… I know there have been people that can’t wait to call in and request the song which has been very encouraging to hear. We see the release as a chance for people who haven’t heard our music to get a taste of who we are, and also a chance for fans to see us reach another level of exposure which is always exciting.

B: Absolutely, it is going to be really exciting to see the response from the single and I know I speak for both of us when I say that we cannot wait to record and release more music in 2017!

Q. When country fans listen to your music, or see a live show, what do you hope they feel and take away from it?

A: Bryton and I put a lot of thought into each live show, and we do our best to be our true, authentic selves on and off the stage. We also make sure that audiences get a sense of our passion and energy! If someone is coming to a live show, they are definitely going to leave feeling like they know us as friends!

B: We also try and create intimate moments in our shows. One of our favorite ways of doing that is by letting our band take a break and perform a few songs just Annika, myself and my guitar. It is always a special moment of the show and we love being able to perform our songs the way they were written.

Q. A lot of people are ready for 2017 to get here for a lot of reasons – in 50 words or less, can you tell us what excites you most for the new year?

A: When I look back on 2016, I was able to travel a lot and spend time with the people I love. I hope that 2017 brings more time with my family, new experiences (both in and out of Canada), and more opportunities to create, record, and perform with Bryton. Each year gets better and I hope 2017 is no exception!

B: I would have to say I am most excited to see where the next year takes Leaving Thomas! It has been a crazy couple of months, getting ready for the launch of our single, but I am excited for more craziness and the opportunities that lie ahead for Annika and I.
