2017 Canadian National Exhibition Northern Comfort Saloon Lineup and Schedule

If you like cold drink and hot country music, the Northern Comfort Saloon at the Canadian National Exhibition should be on your to do list this summer!

We’ve been checking out the Northern Comfort Saloon since year one in 2014, and every year there’s a pretty fantastic selection of country music to sing, drink, and dance to. In fact, just last year The Washboard Union took their turn for six days, and then won Rising Star and Roots Artist of the Year at the 2016 Canadian Country Music Awards… so ya, these are talented artists.

The 2017 lineup has some of our favourite up-and-coming artists, including Northern Comfort Saloon returnees, Cory Marquardt, Kelly Prescott, and Buck Twenty – and artists with new releases in 2017 including Johnson Crook and Andrew Hyatt.

We’ve put together the full schedule with dates and times, so you know which days to come see some of your emerging country music favourites on stage, playing originals, covers, and having a party.

Mark your calendar, and then use the poll and/or leave a comment to tell us who you’re most excited to see at this year’s CNE country bar stage!

5 Quick Questions with Robyn & Ryleigh

While we were in London, ON for Canadian Country Music Week we had a chance to sit down with Robyn Gillespie of Robyn & Ryleigh for a little hang out. Unfortunately Ryleigh wasn’t able to make the trip after a car accident at home in BC, but Robyn brought her in “photo on a stick” form, and we know everyone was sending healing thoughts back to her.

Since we had Robyn though, we hit her with 5 quick questions… and here they are!

Q1: If you’re on a long road trip and can only have 1 album in the car, what CD are you choosing?

Robyn: Anything by Miranda Lambert

We know that she didn’t give us a specific album, but we’re willing to accept this answer since Miranda doesn’t have a greatest hits offering, and each of her album brings a bunch of great songs to the table.

Q2: What is the 1st song you remember knowing all the words to?

Robyn: Long Time Gone by the Dixie Chicks

It’s crazy to think that the song is almost 15 years old now… but it’s true, and it’s still a fun track to sing along with!

Q3: What is your #1 hobby when you’re not working on music?

Robyn: Playing guitar

So Robyn kind of failed on this question, but she answered so honestly that we found it hard to hold it against her and make her go again.

Q4: What is the one thing you need to have with you when you walk into a writing session?

Robyn: A Cool Lime Refresher from Starbucks

She was very specific about the flavour of her drink, making sure that we wrote it down correctly… which makes us wonder if Robyn would write with us as long as we showed up with a drink, maybe.

Q5: What artist do you think people should be paying more attention to than they are right now?

Robyn: Chris Buck Band

We met with Chris on the weekend, and we’ve heard some of the band’s music, so we aren’t going to argue. Robyn also added that people should be looking out for and supporting their local musicians as well… and we are all in on that advice too!

5 Quick Questions with Chris Buck Band!

We had a chance to hang out for a few minutes with Chris Buck of the Chris Buck Band while we were in London, ON for Canadian Country Music Week – and while we had him we popped him with 5 quick questions.

#5 has the ballsiest answer… so stick around til you get to it!

ccma-2016-chris-buck-1260Q1: Let’s say you’re on a long road trip and you could only listen to 1 CD over and over… what album do you choose?

Chris: Blue Rodeo by 5 Days in July

We have zero argument against getting in the car and listening to this album on repeat. In fact, I think I’ve done it.

Q2: What is the 1st song you can remember knowing all the words to so you could sing along?

Chris: Chattahoochee by Alan Jackson

We didn’t ask Chris to sing the song… but if he ever shouts out for requests at a show and we’re there, you can bet that’s what we’ll be yelling for!

Q3: What is your #1 hobby that you can dive into during your downtime?

Chris: Hockey!

Really, that was his answer. We got him to drill down a little more and found out that he still likes to play with his buddies ay home when he gets a chance – but he’s not a huge fan of playing in the beer league.

Q4: What is “the” thing that you need to have when you walk into a writing session?

Chris: A melody or a song title

We know it’s not a “thing”, but it makes sense. Chris said he needs to walk in feeling like he’s got something to start from, which sounds pretty reasonable.

Q5: Can you give us a prediction for the 2016-17 NHL season?

Chris: The Toronto Maple Leafs make the playoffs

He did add that it would be in the 8 seed in the Eastern Conference… but the playoffs is the playoffs, and there are a lot of fans hoping he’s right.

5 Quick Questions with Lisa Nicole!

Castlegar, B.C native, Lisa Nicole took a few minutes to sit and hang out with us during Canadian Country Music Week in London, ON – and we took the opportunity to ask her 5 quick questions.

Lisa is in the middle of a cross Canada tour, with stops coming up in Halifax, Charlottetown, West Kelowna, and more as she supports her newest release Come Find Me. Check her out online to learn more!

And now, 5 quick questions with Lisa Nicole…

Q1: If you could only listen to 1 album on repeat in the car on a long drive, what CD would you choose?

Lisa: Any Miranda Lambert album

It’s hard to argue. As an example of a strong female country singer, Miranda is a perfect fit. And as a fan of her music, it’s easy to agree to listening to any of her records over and over again.

Q2: What is the 1st song you remember knowing all the words to?

Lisa: My Baby Loves Me (Just The Way That I Am) by Martina McBride

It was really tempting to start singing the song when she said the title… I had forgotten how great it a song it is.

Q3: When you’re not working on music, what is your favourite hobby?

Lisa: Being in the gym or cooking

Lisa told us that she brought her steamer and some homegrown veggies on the road with her so she can keep her healthy diet in check during the tour… only someone who loves to make her own food would do that.

Q4: What is the 1 thing you need to bring with you or have in the room when you are at a writing session?

Lisa: Laptop

It makes sense. You can do anything on a laptop. Record, research, check Facebook – we aren’t going to argue with this answer.

Q5: What artist should we be listening to more than we are right now?

Lisa: Robyn & Ryleigh and Chris Buck Band

We know a little bit about both of these acts – and like what we’ve heard. So if we’re getting a recommendation to listen to more, we’re willing to second that!

Big thanks to Lisa Nicole for the hang outs. See you soon!
