Doc Walker

Weathervane: Doc Walker at Boots & Hearts 2017!

Doc Walker hit the Boots & Hearts main stage on Thursday night in the headlining slot… and they showed the assembled country fans that they’ve still got after more than two decades on the job!

With a setlist full of hits and sing alongs, the boys made sure to keep the Coors Banquet Kick Off Party going after the sun went down and the moon peeked through the clouds over Oro-Medonte. The energy level of Chris, Dave, and the band was matched by the thousands of fans in the field in front of the stage. We saw dancing, singing, cheering, girls on shoulders, and a whole lot of happy faces.

This was a good time, from every angle, no matter where we looked. And it was fantastic to see at the start of one of our favourite weekends of the summer.

In looking at Doc Walker’s achievements over the years (CCMA and Juno Awards wins) it seems silly to say this… but in my opinion, Doc Walker are underrated. They played song after song that connected with the crowd, and there were very few that didn’t have fans singing along nearly word for word. Heck, they just released a greatest hits album last year that had 20 tracks on it. And yet, I just don’t think they get enough credit for their career in many country fans’ eyes. These guys deserve your praise and love!

The sound from the stage was great from Sicka Whiskey, through to Rocket Girl, Heaven On Dirt, and the rest of their Thursday night set. It may have taken six years for the band to land on the Boots & Hearts lineup, but it was well worth the wait.

And the next time you have the chance to see Doc Walker live on a stage near you – take it.

Boots & Hearts 2017 Weather Forecast!

With Boots & Hearts 2017 coming up this week… it’s time to seriously get started on the planning and packing. And if you’re going to start doing those things without checking the weather – you’re asking for trouble.

So, before you start deciding what to wear to Boots & Hearts, we suggest checking the forecast for Oro-Medonte and what it might be doing when Doc Walker, Keith Urban, Brantley Gilbert, and Luke Bryan headline Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights.

Sadly, it looks like rain may be in the cards – which we should probably have expected since it’s darn near a B&H tradition. But, that doesn’t mean we can’t have a lot of fun. With temperatures that will still hit the 20s, and humidity part of the equation, shorts and tanks and tees will still be the order of the day. With rubber boots, ponchos, and hoodies a smart addition to any wardrobe.

Stay up to date on the Boots & Hearts/ Oro-Medonte weather forecast as we get closer to the festival by Clicking Here as Thursday approaches.

Boots & Hearts 2017 Day-to-Day Lineup Announcement!

We’re closing in on 3 months away from Boots & Hearts 2017 at Burl’s Creek Event Park… and with seven new names added to the lineup this morning, it feels like we’re nearing the full list of performers.

And adding to that is the announcement of the day-to-day lineups for this year’s festival!

Yes, we now know who we’re going to see on which day. And yes, there are more details to come, telling us who will play on the main stage, who will be on the front porch stage, and what time we’ll be seeing everyone… but this is a huge start to the planning process, and amps up the excitement for each day of August 10 through 13.

Let’s start at the start, with the Thursday night Coors Banquet Kick Off Party, and go through the weekend!

And, for each day we’ll key in on a couple of names (headliners not included) that we think you should be ready to watch… and enjoy!

Ready?

Thursday, August 10 – Coors Banquet Kick Off Party

Doc Walker
Vanessa Marie Carter
and more…

This one is easy… both Doc Walker and Vanessa Marie Carter are going to be awesome. But after seeing 5 acts on stage last year during the kick off party, we’re waiting to see who else gets added here!

Friday, August 11

Keith Urban
Dan + Shay
Frankie Ballard
Kiefer Sutherland
Drake White & The Big Fire
Brooke Eden
Endless Summer
Jessica Mitchell
Andrew Hyatt
Leaving Thomas
Sykamore

Ugh, so this is not as easy… Drake White & The Big Fire are awesome, if you haven’t seen them before, you need to make your way to the stage for them. And if we’re going to pick more, which we have to do, we’re highlighting Jessica Mitchell, Andrew Hyatt, and upstart duo Leaving Thomas.

Saturday, August 12

Brantley Gilbert
Eli Young Band
Chad Brownlee
Tucker Beathard
Aubrie Sellers
Lindi Ortega
JJ Shiplett
The Abrams
Jesse Gold
Nice Horse

We all know how great Chad Brownlee is, so let’s skip him and move to JJ Shiplett and The Abrams. We’re looking forward to both of these sets, and can’t wait for more country music fans to hear their music.

Sunday, August 13

Luke Bryan
Brett Eldridge
Jess Moskaluke
Cold Creek County
Midland
Delta Rae
Dani Strong
Alee
Kelly Prescott
Colt Walker

Last day, and it’s still not easy. If you haven’t seen Alee yet, go listen to her brand new record and then get ready to see her on stage… and you are not going to want to miss Midland. Those Texas boys are good, and funny, and we’re willing to bet that they’re going to kill it on the big stage.

So there you go… this is who we’ll see each day at Boots & Hearts 2017. Now, get ready to be even more excited every day as we get closer.

And stay tuned for contests, interviews, previews and more!

We have been super happy to have Doc Walker back on the Canadian country scene, and this is just another chance to celebrate.

Just as happy as that makes us though, seeing the young talent added to the festival is awesome. AND we LOVE the fact that we’re adding more women to the stages with Alee, Delta Rae, Vanessa Marie Carter, Leaving Thomas, and Nice Horse bringing amazing female talent to the B&H crowds.

Now, to change gears for a minute, we want to fill you in on some things we learned about the 2017 Boots & Hearts festival during a chat with Ryan Howes…

★ There are changes coming to the stages – with brand new stages coming to the grounds for both the main and front porch performances.

★ And, the front porch stage will be moving, closer to the main stage, in an awesome wooded area that we’ve hung out in during WayHome. It’s going to be awesome for daytime and late night partying.

★ We’re getting a beach. Yup. A beach.

★ VIP ticket holders will experience more cool features and bonuses in 2017.

★ The camping experience is getting an update and upgrade. Look for new layouts, a 24 hour general store, and upgraded market area that will offer all kinds of awesome stuff.

★ And while it’s not new, we have been told that Buzz Brainard will be back with SiriusXM on a new stage, in a new spot, and with awesome programming.

All in all, Boots & Hearts 2017 is shaping up to be a pretty fantastic time. Headliners Keith Urban, Luke Bryan, and Brantley Gilbert will put on kick ass shows. Canadian stars like Chad Brownlee, Jess Moskaluke, and Cold Creek County will shine and make us proud. And there is so much emerging talent that you are going to fall in love with, if you haven’t already.

Please Welcome to the Stage… Boots & Hearts 2017 Predictions!

We’re just under 9 months away from Boots & Hearts 2017 at Burl’s Creek in Oro, ON – but it really doesn’t feel like that long at all!

In fact, we’ve already been thinking about B&H a lot, and while we can’t give you many details yet, we can tell you that we’re going to have some very, very exciting things coming up between now and festival season next year.

But for now we want to talk about the potential lineup for the 6th annual country music extravaganza… we don’t have any info that you don’t have. We haven’t talked to the Republic Live team for any tips or rumours. But I have come up with a list of 10 country artists that I think have a legit chance to play at Boots & Hearts next August.

This isn’t an old fashioned wish list, which is why you won’t see names like Garth Brooks, Shania, Reba, or Brooks & Dunn… although it would be really cool if any of those artists headlined. This list is made up of talent that we’ve either seen in the past and believe are a good fit for a return next year, or that we haven’t seen yet, and have a good reason to play such a sweet gig.

This wasn’t an easy list of 10 to make, which is why there are a few names at the bottom that could also be at B&H in 2017. And, I want you list too, so leave a comment!

In no particular order, here we go…

Doc Walker

With the release of Echo Road (their greatest hits record) and an upcoming album of new music in March 2017, Doc Walker are the perfect fit for B&H 2017. Whether they play the main stage, or the front porch, there’s no doubt that their collection of hits, and whatever new tunes they release will make for an entertaining set.

Bobby Wills

When The Lights Go Down Toronto Bobby Wills-8043CCMA nominations, top 10 singles, hot videos, and a growing legion of fans all point to Bobby Wills making his Boots & Hearts debut in 2017.

We’ve seen Bobby play some stages over the last few years, and we know that he has what it takes to pull a crowd in, have them singing along, and enjoying the party.

Little Big Town

In 2015 LBT had to pull out of the Boots & Hearts lineup… and we’re still waiting for them to come back and give us a show that we’ll be talking about long after they leave the stage.

We’ve seen them before and we can’t wait to see them again. Hopefully up on the main stage in front of 40,000 people.

Maren Morris

maren-morris-hero-albumMorris is on top of the world with the recognition that’s coming from singles like 80’s Mercedes and My Church. And if you haven’t heard the rest of Hero, you’re doing yourself a disservice.

We haven’t seen Morris live, but I have a feeling that a few thousand of our best friends singing along to My Church could be a highlight of the weekend.

Kelsea Ballerini

Love Me Like You Mean It, Dibs, and Peter Pan have been a strong start to Ballerini’s career. And after her performance at the 2016 Canadian Country Music Awards (where Boots & Hearts won for Country Festival, Fair or Exhibition of the Year) we know that a Canuck crowd can get behind she when she sings.

With another single sure to come soon, there’s no doubting Kelsi’s talent or popularity, or that she belongs at B&H 2017.

James Barker Band

James Barker Band SiriusXM Fan Stage BH5 Boots and Hearts 2016After winning the Emerging Artist Showcase in 2015 and performing on the main stage in 2016 the James Barker Band has certainly earned the love of the B&H crowd. And with the success of Lawn Chair Lazy and the release of Just Sayin’ – plus an EP coming in the (we hope) near future, we know that country fans are ready to cheer and sing and dance with James, Taylor, Bobby and Connor again at Boots & Hearts 2017!

Chris Stapleton

I know from talking to executive members of the Republic Live team that Chris Stapleton is just as adored internally as he is by the rest of the world. And after the success of Traveller, it’s impossible to think that the Boots & Hearts crowd wouldn’t go wild for the country crooner.

Stapleton played the main stage in 2014 – and he’d be welcome to do it again in 2017 we’re sure!

Brett Kissel

Brett Kissel CNE 2015Also a 2014 B&H alum, Kissel played the Coors Banquet Kick Off Party on the front porch stage… but he’s never been on the main stage.

In 2017, after winning the Fans’ Choice, Male Artist, and Interactive Artist of the Year awards at the CCMA’s this year, we know that thousands (tens of thousands) of Canadian country fans would be okay with the chance to sing along to Started With A Song, Airwaves, Come Pick Me Up, and 3, 2, 1. Bring it on Brett!

Runaway Angel

The first time we saw Runaway Angel they were on the Boots & Hearts stage in the Emerging Artist Showcase. And now, after having seen them grow and become more and more entertaining – we’re ready to see them back on the B&H stage.

Take a listen to No End In Sight (the debut album from Runaway Angel), close your eyes and imagine the songs coming from the stage.

Jessica Mitchell

Jessica Mitchell BH5 Boots and Hearts 2016-Jessica Mitchell stole a lot of hearts in the last year… mine included. Workin’ On Whiskey is the kind of song that gets stuck in your soul. And songs like That Record Saved My Life and Grown Up Things prove that she’s not just a one trick pony.

After opening for Kiefer Sutherland on his 2016 tour, playing a short set of her own on the Sirius XM stage at #BH5, and taking the stage as a special guest with Lindsay Ell, we know that Jessica is ready for an full sized audience of her own at Boots & Hearts in 2017.

BONUS: Keith Urban

keith-urban-ripcord-albumIf you’ve ever seen Urban live, you know he’s killer with a big crowd. And if you haven’t seen Keith Urban live, he should be on your bucket list!

Coming into the sixth year of the festival, it makes sense to try and lock up this guitar wizard for a headlining slot. If you’ve been at any other Boots & Hearts festival over the years you can expect the exact same kind of pandemonium for this set. Plus, there’s Ripcord (March 2016) to sing along to!

Also on my list, but just outside the top 10…

Darius Rucker, Lady Antebellum, Dallas Smith, Shae Dupuy, Terri Clark, Endless Summer, and Johnson Crook.

Who do you think we’ll see at Boots & Hearts 2017? Leave a comment telling us and we might just have some swag to send our favourite answers!

Echo Road: Doc Walker Q&A!

It’s been a beautiful life for Doc Walker. A career that has seen 20 years pass since the release of their first single, and now sees them sitting at the top of the Canadian country charts on iTunes with a greatest hits release nobody can complain about.

Okay, not nobody, with a 20 year career to sift through somebody’s favourite song is going to get left off of the 20 track album. But don’t think the band wasn’t trying to satisfy everyone. They really, really were!

echoroad-500pxI spoke with Dave Wasyliw on the phone near the end of a second consecutive day full of media and press in and around Toronto, and we talked about the makeup of Echo Road, the hits, new music, the band’s live show, small towns, influences and more.

Echo Road is a greatest hits album, this you know. But it isn’t the regular, 12 top hits release that you’re used to. This is a 20 song album that includes 16 of the band’s biggest hits, 2 songs that the band loves and felt needed to included, and 2 brand new tracks (including the new single, Heaven On Dirt) to round it out. It’s a massive release that nearly maxes out what a single CD hold with a total runtime of 74 minutes.

And going back to the wanting to satisfy everyone, Dave told me that there were about 12 other songs that could have made this record but didn’t end up making the final cut. It really wasn’t easy for the band.

What is easy for Doc Walker is hitting the road and playing these songs. Dave and I talked about touring, and went back to last winter’s CP Holiday Train and the small town spring tour that followed. We talked about how cool it is to roll into a small town and be part of an event, something that you can tell people are going to enjoy and remember like we had in our small towns when we were young. Dave said his goal is to put on a big city show for a small town crowd and to make everyone in attendance feel like something awesome happened.

Note: For Dave that small town memory is April Wine coming to Portage La Prairie, Manitoba and for me it’s Kim Mitchell coming to Port Hope, Ontario.

doc-walker-street

Dave told me that the live show on the current tour (click here to see dates and get tickets) is a journey from the beginning of their career through the middle and to where the band is now. They’ll be playing all 20 songs from the Echo Road album in their set… so there will be plenty of opportunities for singing along.

And I wholly encourage you to sing. I told Dave that my favourite part of live shows was the crowd singing along with the band, and because of that I wanted to ask him for memorable moments from over the years. First he told me that hearing a crowd sing Rocket Girl to the band was a really cool thing. It was the first big single that fan’s really grabbed hold of and ran with, and hearing them sing along was a treat. But his second example takes the cake…

While on tour in Australia the band was getting a lot of love for Beautiful Life, but it was when they played If I Fall that they really had their moment. 10,000 strong picked up every word and roared through the chorus, and Dave told me that it was almost hard to keep going. The boys were as far away from home as they could get and the crowd was as loud as anything they had ever heard.

During our call we also touched on the response to Heaven On Dirt, with Dave telling me that AM radio in small towns across the country have given Doc Walker the strongest reception of their career.

doc-walker-head-shotsWe also talked about Phil Collins and Genesis going back to the band’s 2008 cover of That’s All. It turns out Dave and I both grew up in homes that played a lot of Genesis, and Dave told me that he was sold immediately when the idea of covering the song was presented to him. However, Chris was a little skeptical going into the process because he didn’t have the same Genesis background. But in just a few takes in the studio the song came together and sounded exactly like you hear it on Beautiful Life and Echo Road.

Dave also told me that Doc Walker will be back on the Holiday Train this year, and then in the studio to work on the rest of the new material that will make up an album of new music in March 2017. There are already 4 songs done, so now the boys just need to get in there and finish things up with a few more.

But for now I have to recommend that you pick up a copy of Echo Road. With 20 songs and for only $10, this is a hell of a record for a great price, and if you’ve ever counted yourself as a fan of Doc Walker in their 20 year career, I’m sure you’ll find yourself singing along to more songs than you expected.

I know I have been.

We talk an awful lot about how proud we are to see country music making an impact in Ontario… but let’s not forget just how HUGE county has been in Alberta for a long, long time!

Part of that country music tradition is the Big Valley Jamboree in Camrose, Alberta for more than 20 freaking years. It’s an impressive stretch that has seen some of the biggest and best in country music make the trip out to entertain fans over a full weekend every summer.
