Imagine Dragons

Whatever It Takes: Imagine Dragons at WayHome 2017

As the clock ticked closer to 9:30 pm on Saturday, the crowd at the WayHome 2017 main stage grew, and the excitement near the stage was electric and contagious. Thousands of sun soaked music lovers, who had bounced from stage to stage all day, were gathered in one place to see the headlining efforts of Imagine Dragons. And they were rewarded handsomely for their patience.

From the first notes of Imagine Dragons’ intro, the cheers from the crowd sounded like both an exclamation of excitement, and a release of energy that needed to be set free into the world. The cheers grew throughout the set, from song to song, stopping only when fans were singing along at the top of their lungs, or dancing and swaying in the crowd as the music washed over them.

The show opened with Thunder and It’s Time, setting the tone for what was to come over the next hour and a half of full energy performance from the Las Vegas rock and rollers. Beating drums, ringing guitar, and powerful vocals persisted as lead singer, Dan Reynolds held the crowd in the palm of his hand and took them where he wanted to go.

Reynolds also went where the crowd wanted him to go, climbing down from the main stage, and making his way to the railing of the first row, urging the assembled mass to sing along, and leaning in to reach for outstretched hands as he smiled from ear to ear and basked in the outpouring of love from the WayHome fans. It was a fantastic moment, with flashes of small club shows where the fans in front are sometimes nearly on the stage, and it turned the biggest crowd of WayHome (so far) into a more intimate feeling environment.

Early in the set he also stopped to talk to the crowd, offering “We live in a divided world… people try to divide us… by race, religion, sexual orientation… (but) music unites us all… Spread peace, spread love. I believe in humanity. Do you?” He asked again, and the crowd roared, sharing the sentiment that love and unity can prevail.

The music continued from the band, with a total of 17 songs in the set. And impressively, there was no dip in enthusiasm from the fans or Imagine Dragons throughout. Reynolds active effort to engage the crowd on a regular basis kept things at high levels, and the sing along opportunities resulted in the loudest efforts from the WayHome fans of the weekend to that point.

Watching the band perform, and engage, and share themselves, made it easy to see why they have enjoyed the success that they’ve found over the last five years. It truly seems that they’re still working for it, like they would have been before finding the headlining spotlight.

When it came time for the encore, Imagine Dragons pulled out their biggest hit, Radioactive, and added extended full band drum segments, extended choruses with crowd singing, and enough emotional energy to wrap up the show. And as it all happened, the crowd popped one more time, showing their appreciation for the music, the show, and the chance to unite for 90 minutes in a world that too often divides us.

WayHome 2017 Preview: The Darcys

With WayHome just days away, we’re getting geared up for a whole lot of live music and fun… and The Darcys are too.

We caught up with Wes on the phone to talk about festival highlights and tips – drinks – palm trees – flamingos – and more in the lead up to Oro-Medonte’s biggest multi-genre party of the summer season.

One listen to The Darcys’ newest release, Centerfold and it’s clear that there’s a new vibe, direction, and vision from Wes and Jason as they push forward with the band that they started together a decade ago. The art-pop-synth-neon-dancy-palm tree-party sound that peppers the album from front to back is a lot of fun, and they know it. They’ve also seen fans of the band turn the corner to party with the new music, and they’re excited about that result.

Wes told me that it’s exciting to see the fans more engaged than ever before at live shows. “So fun,” he says, and adds that there have been multiple sightings of inflatables in the crowd, including palm trees and parrots. And while parrots may be Jimmy Buffet’s thing, the guys are happy to steal it and see more of them at their shows in every city, every night. Every one of those cities and tour stops is also an opportunity for fans of The Darcys to pick up exclusive merch, and it’s flying off the shelves.

Wes talked about the merch changing from flat black shirts with the band’s’ name in a scripty font to the more colourful pink, seafoam pastels we’re seeing now… at first, fans weren’t sure about the new look and direction – and then, all of a sudden, the boys couldn’t keep the new gear in stock. In fact, there’s a rush merch order right now so WayHome will be fully stocked with brand new merch from The Darcys.

I asked Wes what his personal favourite pieces of merch is right now and he told me that the movie poster sits at the top of the list… but that the new merch that will drop later this summer is ready to take over that top spot.

We also talked a bunch about festival life, with Wes telling me that the Elora Riverfest and WayHome are his two favourites, with both affording him a chance to walk around and truly experience the music and feel of the event. He gave props to the fans who say hi, but are respectful of the fact that he’s there for a good time, just like they are.

I asked which acts he’s most looking forward to checking out at WayHome 2017 and he gave me an awesome list of talent that includes Frank Ocean, Tegan and Sara, Royal Blood, PUP, Justice, and Imagine Dragons among others. And with a list like that, there’s a strong chance we’re going to run into him from time to time on the festival grounds.

I also asked Wes which acts he’d buy tickets to see if he was given the chance, and learned that Beck still sits at the top of his list, with REM, U2, and Bruno Mars all taking spots on the list. His #1 criteria for live shows is: Entertainment… and we can’t argue with that.

Before we finished on the phone I asked Wes a few more questions, starting with some percentages/odds on a bunch of things, including:

• Chances we’ll see at least 1 palm tree on stage at WayHome – Wes says: 100%
• Chance there will be a Toronto show before the end of the year – Wes says: 90%
• Chance there will be a Christmas Cover in 2017 to follow up 2016’s All I Want For Christmas Is You – Wes says: 50%
• Chance the band is working on new stuff right now – Wes says: 100%
AND, I was told that there’s a strong chance we’ll see a rather large inflatable… stay tuned for more.

I also asked what drink he recommends when listening to The Darcys, and he gave two answers:

1) A cold Palm Bay, maybe something with coconut or pineapple.
2) A nice crisp, refreshing summer beer.

And finally, as we’ve been asking a lot of people this year, what is your #1 festival tip… and Wes offered this.

Drink plenty of water. Don’t be afraid to lay off the hooch a little bit. Know where your party comes from. Stick with your friends. Look out for each other.

Thanks again to Wes for the chat, we’re looking forward to seeing The Darcys hit the WayBright Stage at 3pm on Saturday afternoon at WayHome – and we invite you to be there too, because it should be awesome.

Stay tuned for more interviews, photos, reviews, and more – we’ve got it coming in hot!

Oh, and check out the new video for Arizona Hwy from The Darcy’s Centerfold. Right here, right now, just press play!

WayHome 2017 Weather Forecast!

WayHome is so close we can hear the music coming from the speakers. We’ve also started to pack… because we’ve been looking at the weather!

We’ve been told that there’s been an effort to create more shade at this year’s festival, which would be nice even with the more comfortable temperatures…

Squad WayHome Art and Music Festival

That’s right, the forecast is out for Oro-Medonte, and we’re over the freaking moon about it. Last year it felt like 10,000 degrees in the sun. But this year, we’re looking at 23° C all weekend long, and that would be amazing.

Keep track of the forecast as we get closer to the festival by clicking here!

WayHome 2017 Lineup Announcement!

We’ve been waiting, all of us, patiently (mostly) for this day – and now it’s here…

WayHome has released the lineup for the 2017 music and arts festival, and the time is now to get excited for July 28-30 at Burl’s Creek.

With the release of their photo clues last week, WayHome started a conversation full of guesses, predictions, rumours and more. But now the guessing is over, and the planning can start. If you’ve already got your tickets for the festival, you’re hoping that some of the names on the list aren’t performing on stages at the same time (there are always hard decisions), and if you don’t have your tickets yet – it’s time to grab them so you can see Imagine Dragons, Frank Ocean, and Flume headlining on the weekend.

The last two years at WayHome have been a lot of fun. We’ve seen some amazing performances. We’ve seen some awesome totems. And we’ve witnessed the awesomeness of people coming together to enjoy music and art. The people, you people, that come to the fields and stages and campgrounds make this whole thing pretty cool.

Check the list of 2017 WayHome performers so far, and leave a comment telling us who you’re most excited to see.

And stay tuned – because we’ll have previews, interviews, and maybe even some badass contests leading up to the end of July.

Canadian Takeover: Dallas Smith and Chad Brownlee at Boots & Hearts 2015!

Chad Brownlee Boots and Hearts -2542Saturday at Boots & Hearts we got a double shot of Canadian country music talent when Chad Brownlee and Dallas Smith took over the main stage back-to-back.

First up was Chad Brownlee, who we just saw at the Blue Jays pre-game – and who we are happy we saw again. This guy puts on a great show, and the fans knew it. There was a nice cheer to start off the show when the band took the stage, and the evening crowd kept filing in throughout the set to make it a pretty great group of people singing and dancing.

Chad Brownlee Boots and Hearts -2576With a selection of country radio hits to choose from, a 2015 nationwide tour under his belt, and a voice that was made to sing, this former Vancouver Canucks draft pick made people happy.

Chad is also incredibly handsome, which we saw people saying both in the crowd and on the side of the stage. It’s not news to anyone who has seen his face before, but it’s worth mentioning – just look at the pics.

But our favourite thing, and we’re pretty sure Chad loved it too, was looking over the crowd and seeing how many people knew the words and were singing along.

Dallas Smith Boots and Hearts -2747After a short turn over break, Dallas Smith came out to a great crowd reaction, which I’m sure felt good for a guy who wasn’t originally booked for that slot. In a great move, Dallas slid over from Sunday to fill in for Little Big Town, and it was the perfect decision. From the first song the Boots & Hearts crowd was jacked up and ready to party. And the rock and roll country sound was a great lead-in to headliner Eric Church.

Dallas isn’t new to the performing thing, he did with Default and now he does it country – and he’s not new to Boots & Hearts, we saw him in 2012 and 2014, and this was bigger and better and showed that this is a guy who just keeps putting in the work and keeps making new fans.

Dallas Smith Boots and Hearts -2682The 19 song set gave us a little bit of everything with a cover of Pontoon as a Get Well Soon tribute to LBT’s Jimi Westbrook, some Imagine Dragons’ Radioactive, a brand new song Kids With Cars, and all of the hits we were ready for and sing along to on the radio all the time.

Somewhere north of 25,000 people loved every minute of Dallas Smith’s set. And that includes us.

Imagine Dragons, Metric and Halsey – Smoke + Mirrors Tour

Tonight the Imagine Dragons Smoke + Mirrors Tour arrives in Toronto. They’re touring with one of my favourite Canadian bands, Metric, and newcomer, Halsey, who rounds out the line up. I couldn’t wait for the Toronto show, so I made my way to The First Niagara Center on June 24th. I’m really glad I did. It was so good I wish I was heading back tonight to cover it from the pit.

First up was Halsey. I’d never heard her before, but I instantly liked her. The American singer/songwriter has an honest feel to her. It was a nice way to get the show going. Have a listen.

Second on the bill was Metric and they did a great job turning up the energy level. They sounded great and they had a fantastic light show. They’ve got a new single out, “Shade” and the new album will be out September 18th. They’ve got a pretty cool pre-order happening which includes an EP – cassette, signed by the band in a choice of four colours.

My only complaint, I wish they could have played longer.

And then Imagine Dragons took the stage. They did it with a wonderful twist of mystery, and the crowd went crazy! This rarely happens but I’m almost at a loss for words. As I sit here writing, tears are welling up in my eyes. This show, this music, these guys, so much awesome.

The connection with the crowd was instant. Lead singer Dan Reynolds spoke to us with love and appreciation and we absolutely returned it. They’re playing tonight in Toronto and there are still a few tickets left. If you haven’t seen them and you’re wondering how they’d be live… stop wondering. They will take your breath away.

Non-stop memorable moments. I’m feeling like I should go buy a ticket for tonight.

That good.
