Joshua’s 10 Most Listened to Albums of 2017!

As we get ready to put a wrap in 2017, it’s time to look back at some of the music that we loved most from the year. And while this post isn’t a ranking of best albums and likely won’t match your most played records of the year… it is a list of my 10 most listened to albums of 2017!

Like years past, these 10 albums aren’t listed in any order. I don’t have the spin numbers to rank them 1 to 10, and all of them deserve to be played over and over, so it’s honestly too hard for me to put them in order just for the sake of doing so.

Unlike years past, all of the albums on this list were released in 2017… in other years I’ve listed holdovers and classics, but this year I’m keeping it current.

It’s exciting for me to note that this list includes 6 debut full-length albums, 4 albums by Canadian arists, and breaks down in a 7/2/1 split for country/rock/pop.

The truth is that this list could have been way deeper, with more and more albums listed and shared and showed off… so at the bottom of the post you’ll find the honourable mention section. It might be cheating, but those albums deserve a listen too!

The truth as well is that this list could have been way deeper, with more and more albums listed and shared and showed off… so at the bottom of the post you’ll find the honourable mention section. It might be cheating, but those albums deserve a listen too!

Ready? Here we go!

Joshua’s 10 Most Listened to Albums of 2017!

 Taylor Swift: Reputation (2017)

Most played track: Don’t Blame Me

From the moment I woke up on release day, Reputation has been in high rotation. Taylor Swift showed everyone that she’s still capable of swinging for the fences, and connecting – just like she did on 1989.

Yes, she’s a divisive artist and personality – but I’ve been team T.Swift since day 1, and if she insists on releasing bangers like these, I’m not going anywhere.

Carly Pearce: Every Little Thing (2017)

Most played track: Every Little Thing

The breakout female country star of 2017 is Carly Pearce. And on her debut album, Pearce showed that Every Little Thing is just the start of what she’s going to bring to the country music world. Her follow up single, Hide The Wine is catchy as hell, and tracks like If My Name Was Whiskey get stuck in my head on a regular basis.

Midland: On The Rocks (2017)

Most played track: Drinkin’ Problem

I saw Midland live twice in 2017, and when they played songs from their debut album, my ears were happy.

These three dudes did good work breaking into the Nashville scene, and they’ve earned a Canadian following too, with Drinkin’ Problem going to #1 north of the border before it did in the US. Listen to songs like This Old Heart and Check Cashin’ Country for that semi-throwback vibe that I can’t get enough of.

Foo Fighters: Concrete & Gold (2017)

Most played track: Run

When I shared my review of Concrete & Gold earlier this year a friend replied that it could have been summed up in one word, “awesome”.

While I’m happy to have written a little more than that, he was right. With the release of this record, Foo Fighters showed that they’ve still got it. And while we highly encourage the growth of young rock and roll acts, it’s fantastic to have these guys still ripping things up in the studio and on the road.

Foo Fighters Concrete & Gold

Little Big Town: The Breaker (2017)

Most played track: Better Man

I’ve been a fan of Little Big Town since the beginning. I can tell you where I was when they followed me on Twitter. So when an album as good as The Breaker is available to me from a band I love, you can’t be surprised that I played the hell out of it.

With the song of the year (Better Man) included, this album served as a reminder that Little Big Town are major country music stars, belonging in the upper tier of acts when we talk about Nashville.

Little Big Town The Breaker album cover

Andrew Hyatt: Iron & Ashes (2017)

Most played track: She Ain’t You

Andrew Hyatt had a hell of a year in Canadian country music. In the spring we watched him play two shows in Toronto during Canadian music week, and nearer the end of the year we caught up with him on tour with Dallas Smith.

The Iron & Ashes album is packed with tracks that Hyatt needed to share with the world and country music fans. And with a little grungy rock and a little country sweetness mixed together in his heart, Andrew Hyatt showed everyone that listened that he’s got what it takes to hang.

The Beaches: Late Show (2017)

Most played track: Money

That thing we said about encouraging the growth of young rock and rollers – The Beaches embody all of it. These women from Toronto have been ripping it up on stage, and now fans have a chance to rock along at home while listening to Late Show.

With the release of the album, radio support for their single, Money – and a US/Canada tour opening for Death From Above, The Beaches introduced themselves to a lot of new fans this year… and if I had to bet, I’d say there are more fans to be made in 2018.

The Beaches Late Show Album Cover

Thomas Rhett: Life Changes (2017)

Most played track: Life Changes

This record earned its spins from me with catchy songs, great lyrics, and Thomas Rhett’s continued ability to capture my attention. It also became a memory that I’ll never forget when it attached itself to the story I tell about learning I’m going to be a dad in 2018.

I reviewed the Life Changes album for its September release, talked to friends, family, and industry folks about songs like Life Changes and Rhett’s journey of fatherhood – and then, a week later I found out that I’m going to be a first time dad.

I’ve listened to the album a bunch more since then, and when I do, I think of that.

JJ Shiplett: Something To Believe In (2017)

Most played track: Higher Ground

JJ Shiplett’s debut album didn’t surprise me, because we’d had the chance to see him play the songs live on a few occasions before the release – but wanting to hear them again on the record and playing them a bunch is a testament to their quality and how much I like them.

Shiplett’s voice is unique, his fans are all in, and Something To Believe In album serves as an introduction to what should be a career full of music and stories from one of our favourite redheads.

Johnson Crook : The Album (2017)

Most played track: Call Me Home

Johnson Crook may not be a household name, but they’re making people take notice playing shows in Toronto, across Canada at festivals, and by teaming up with the legendary Tom Cochrane on Mr. Nobody. Songs like Call Me Home and their debut single, Minnedosa, will get you moving… you’ll dig ’em.

We’ve been covering Johnson Crook for the last few years, and have watched as they’ve developed their live show, and the songs on their album. And with four part harmonies, a roots based sound, and a touch of rock and roll thrown in when it fits best, The Album is exactly what we hoped to get from the boys on their debut record.

Johnson Crook The Album cover

And now, as promised, the list of albums that I listened to a whole bunch, but not quite enough to crack the top 10…

Honourable mentions

Shania Twain: Now, Jess Moskaluke: Past The Past, Lady Antebellum: Heart Break, The Katherines: To Bring You My Heart, Joey Landreth: Whiskey, Lindsay Ell: The Project, Jojo Mason: Both Sides Of The Bar, River Town Saints: River Town Saints, The Cadillac Three: Legacy, James Barker Band: Game On, Arkells: Morning Report (Deluxe)

15 Boots & Hearts 2018 Artist Predictions

With the dates for Boots & Hearts 2018 released and our recovery from the 2017 festival complete, it’s time to look at our predictions for BH7 next August.

As always, the names listed below have been picked because we fully believe there is a chance that they could play the festival. Yes, we’d love to see Garth and Reba, but the odds are very, very, very long on that happening. So, we’ve put together this list of 15 country artists that we’re predicting for Boots & Hearts 2018.

When you’re done reading, please leave a comment telling us who you think we got right, and who you think will be at Burl’s Creek next summer.

Note: All artist names have been listed in alphabetical order… not in order of preference or how certain we are with the prediction.

Boots and Hearts 2018 Headliners

Chris Young

Chris Young Trackside Fest 2016

The newest invitee of the Grand Ole Opry is on quite a run. With 5 studio albums (plus a Christmas record) on his resume, there’s no shortage of material for Young to bust out in a 90 minute headlining set. And with songs that are guaranteed to get people singing along at the top of their lungs… this would work.

Kenny Chesney

Kenny Chesney may be the biggest gamble here. The four-time CMA Entertainer of the Year winner has a reputation for putting on a great show, and with 14 studio albums worth of material, we know that he could have 40,000+ country music fans singing along from start to finish.

Little Big Town

Little Big Town was on the original schedule for Boots & Hearts 2015, but had to cancel due to medical issues. We’ve been hoping and waiting ever since for them to be added back to the list. In these last couple of years the quartet has elevated themselves to legitimate headlining status, and we truly hope that the Canadian fans that love B&H get to see them sing.

Zac Brown Band

CMT Music Fest - Zac Brown Band

We’ve seen the Zac Brown Band headline for at CMT Music Fest in 2016… and we’d gladly do it all over again at Boots & Hearts 2018. With a long list of hits and fan favourites, and a reputation for playing amazing covers of songs people love, ZBB could headline any night of the festival.

We’re good with all four of these options. None of them have played Boots & Hearts in the first six years of the festival, making them exciting options for year seven, and all of them come with hits, fan favourites, and star power.

Supporting Talent

Andrew Hyatt
Andrew Hyatt - Northern Comfort Saloon - CNE 2017With his first Top 20 single on the books, upcoming tour dates with Dallas Smith that will earn him new attention and fans, and the kind of energy that delivers a great show – Andrew Hyatt should make his main stage debut at Boots & Hearts 2018.

Brett Kissel
Brett Kissel - CNE 2017We’ve been waiting for a Canadian opener since Boots & Hearts year 1, and while Brett may be at the top of our list to nab that spot – we’re look at him as the direct support for someone like Zac Brown or Little Big Town on Saturday or Sunday night

Brett Young
Brett Young’s star is rising fast! We saw him this summer on tour with Lady Antebellum, and this dude has what it takes to entertain a crowd. Look for him late in the afternoon as party heats up.

Carly Pearce
Carly Pearce - Budweiser Stage 2017Pearce is another rising star in American country. Her debut album drops this fall, and with success already coming to her with her first single, Every Little Thing, we’d be surprised not to see her bring the Big Machine bus to Boots & Hearts 2018.

Dan Davidson
Dan Davidson - Rod, Gun and Barbers ParkdaleLikeable, talented, and always ready to play music, Dan Davidson is a great bet to come east to Ontario and play for the Boots & Hearts crowd. Fans already dig Found and Barn Burner, and by next summer we’re guessing they’ll be ready to sing along to even more.

Dustin Lynch
A cowboy hat, jeans, and t-shirt looks good on the Boots & Hearts stage, we’ve seen it before. And if Dustin Lynch shows up in that outfit and plays his hits (the dude’s top 10 Spotify tracks have more than 200,000,000 plays) we know the Canadian country fans would be seein’ red.

Jojo Mason
JoJo Mason BH5 Boots and Hearts 2016The first time Jojo Mason played Boots & Hearts the crowd chanted his name and made it a day he’ll never forget. Now, fans have had a chance to learn more about Jojo with his debut album, Both Sides Of The Bar, and his CCMA nomination for 2017 Rising Star. If Jojo were to come back with his energy and those songs, it’d be all good.

Kelsea Ballerini
Kelsea Ballerini has been number 1 with Dibs, Peter Pan, and Love Me Like You Mean It, and fans are in love with her voice and her style. We’ve seen her live, and the chance to see it again at Boots & Hearts with some of the biggest names in country music makes perfect sense to us.

Madeline Merlo
Madeline Merlo - Dean Brody Tour-EdmontonMadeline Merlo rocks a summer vibe like almost nobody we’ve ever known, so seeing her back on the Boots & Hearts stage on a sunny summer afternoon seems like a perfect fit. Whether she plays the main stage, or a late slot on the front porch, we know a crowd of Canadian country fans would be there to sing along with the B.C. native.

Maren Morris

A post shared by Maren Morris (@marenmorris) on

Maren Morris is quickly becoming one of the young queens of country music. Her debut album, Hero, is filled with jams from front to back, and her duet with Thomas Rhett on Craving You earned her two CMA nominations (Vocal Event and Music Video of the Year) to go along with her Female Vocalist of the Year nomination. Let’s see her on the big stage!

The Reklaws
Budweiser County Fair The ReklawsThese Boots & Hearts vets are due back to the country’s biggest summer festival after releasing a banger with Hometown Kids, and the promise of more new music on the way. Be ready to see them back at their old stomping grounds.

Thomas Rhett
Thomas Rhett Boots and Hearts 2015With main stage talent and charisma, Thomas Rhett could headline Friday night, or be the perfect lead in to Kenny Chesney or Little Big Town. I’d lean towards headlining option, only because we’ve already seen him in the direct support spot at Boots & Hearts already. Also, if you haven’t heard it yet, go listen to Thomas Rhett’s brand new album, Life Changes!

Who do you think I got right? Who do you think I got wrong? Who do you think I missed?

Giddy Up: Budweiser County Fair Toronto!

In the heart of the city, country took over. The Budweiser County Fair brought country music, BBQ, beer and more to King Street West, and country fans were there to soak it all in while they soaked up the sun.

The two day festival featured a list of rising stars on stage, and paired with the food, drinks, games, line dancing, pie eating, bull riding, and general good times, we’re calling it a win for Toronto and the live music scene in the city.

We were at the County Fair on Saturday, and to say there was a lot going on would be an understatement…

Line dancing lessons popped up between sets all day, with beginner, and more advanced dances being taught to the crowd. It was awesome to see the combination of men and women, in everything from flip-flops to broken in cowboy boots.

The mechanical bull was a hot spot all day, with some entertaining rides – and a contest that saw male and female winners take home tickets to Boots & Hearts 2017.

Budweiser County Fair Toronto

The pie eating contest was a hot mess of cherry pie filling and crust all over contestants, the table, and the ground… but it was also awesome.

There were well deserved lineups for food, including the pig roast by Chef Kevin Castonguay and the hot dogs from Chef Stephen Payne.

And the live music from MacArthur Clark, Kaitlin Kozell, Jesse Gold, The Reklaws, and Emily Reid was on point!

MacArthur Clark took the stage first with a stripped down set of tunes that showed off his rich voice. With sweet, sad, true, and real notes that come from good singer/songwriter music.

The Peterborough, ON native is strong on stage, and songs like Blinded rang through the early afternoon crowd with the kind of soul that MacArthur Clark is known for to their fans. And, the cover of Cash’s Ring Of Fire was an excellent end to the set, offering a personal take on the classic song, and a dedication to Travis Berlenbach’s dad made it extra special.

Budweiser County Fair Toronto Budweiser County Fair Toronto

Kaitlin Kozell took the stage after a break for line dancing and festival fun. And along with her band, they filled the King Street West space with the country sound we’ve heard from her at events like Boots & Hearts and Steak Stock in the past.

Songs like Highway 28 and Right As Rain gave the crowd a taste of who the singer is and what she does. Kaitlin’s crowd work was also great, with a great highlight leading into Incognito. Her request for a little help from the crowd if the form of a baseball cap lead to one dude tossing her his Detroit Tigers lid, which probably looked better on her than it did on him.

Kaitlin Kozell is one to keep your eye on… trust us.

Budweiser County Fair TorontoBudweiser County Fair Toronto

After another break for line dancing, food, games, and the search for shade, Natasha Zimbaro hit the County Fair stage, accompanied by her band and some awesome silver balloons displaying her initials.

Natasha’s energy was a perfect fit for the late afternoon crowd, with some pep in her step, and her songs, she let her strong voice and solid performing chops show everyone what she has to offer.

Tracks like Cardboard Box (now available at CMT Canada) and Obvious, as well as her covers of Rascal Flatts’ Riot and Mötley Crue’s Home Sweet Home, rang across the space, and made new fans out of the Toronto country fans.

Budweiser County Fair Toronto Budweiser County Fair TorontoBudweiser County Fair Toronto

As afternoon turned to evening, Jesse Gold took the County Fair stage, and the combination of his guitar picking + his accompanying guitar picking + and the songs he brings to the stage, he put on a show worth seeing.

The vibe reminds us of a Jack Johnson or Ed Sheeran – acoustic picking, sweet words, and the kind of music that you’re very comfortable listening to. The Electric/Acoustic hybrid on the stripped down set brought an interesting and appreciated feel, and songs like Lake Girl, and Chris Stapleton’s I Was Wrong were the hook Gold needed to grab our attention and make us take note that we’ll be seeing more of him in the future.

Jesse Gold Budweiser County Fair TorontoBudweiser County Fair Toronto Jesse Gold Budweiser County Fair Toronto

As the dinner hour passed, the beers continued to flow, and the pie eating and bull riding contests were wrapped – The Reklaws prepared for their turn on the stage.

The Hometown Kids, duo had been seen at the County Fair all day in their position as hosts, but in new outfits, with amped up energy, and their entertaining vibes turned up to 11, Jenna and Stuart hit the stage with their band, and put on the kind of show that we were hoping for.

The downtown Toronto crowd was given everything they hoped for as the brother/sister act rang through their set of originals and covers, allowing even the most casual of country fans to get in on the action.

The Reklaws Budweiser County Fair Toronto

We got to hear The Reklaws jam out to originals, Wish You Were Beer, Boys Don’t Cry, Last Call, and their current single, Hometown Kids – and they sounded great doing it. And when they dipped into their bag of tricks for covers of Shaggy’s Angel, The Steve Miller Band’s The Joker, Rihanna’s Four Five Seconds, Sum 41’s In Too Deep, and Kip Moore’s Somethin’ ‘Bout A Truck – there were jumps and sways and singing along all throughout the County Fair.

And with an awesome little acoustic medley that had everyone singing along, the Budweiser County Fair got to hear Stuart and Jenna slip together clips of Snapback (Old Dominion), Better Man (Little Big Town), Body Like A Back Road (Sam Hunt), My Church (Maren Morris), and H.O.L.Y. (Florida Georgia Line). We love a good medley, we love country music, and we loved this little addition to the set.

We know we’re going to see The Reklaws again soon, you will too.

And we’re already looking forward to next year when the Budweiser County Fair comes back to Toronto. See you there.

Please Welcome to the Stage… Boots & Hearts 2017 Predictions!

We’re just under 9 months away from Boots & Hearts 2017 at Burl’s Creek in Oro, ON – but it really doesn’t feel like that long at all!

In fact, we’ve already been thinking about B&H a lot, and while we can’t give you many details yet, we can tell you that we’re going to have some very, very exciting things coming up between now and festival season next year.

But for now we want to talk about the potential lineup for the 6th annual country music extravaganza… we don’t have any info that you don’t have. We haven’t talked to the Republic Live team for any tips or rumours. But I have come up with a list of 10 country artists that I think have a legit chance to play at Boots & Hearts next August.

This isn’t an old fashioned wish list, which is why you won’t see names like Garth Brooks, Shania, Reba, or Brooks & Dunn… although it would be really cool if any of those artists headlined. This list is made up of talent that we’ve either seen in the past and believe are a good fit for a return next year, or that we haven’t seen yet, and have a good reason to play such a sweet gig.

This wasn’t an easy list of 10 to make, which is why there are a few names at the bottom that could also be at B&H in 2017. And, I want you list too, so leave a comment!

In no particular order, here we go…

Doc Walker

With the release of Echo Road (their greatest hits record) and an upcoming album of new music in March 2017, Doc Walker are the perfect fit for B&H 2017. Whether they play the main stage, or the front porch, there’s no doubt that their collection of hits, and whatever new tunes they release will make for an entertaining set.

Bobby Wills

When The Lights Go Down Toronto Bobby Wills-8043CCMA nominations, top 10 singles, hot videos, and a growing legion of fans all point to Bobby Wills making his Boots & Hearts debut in 2017.

We’ve seen Bobby play some stages over the last few years, and we know that he has what it takes to pull a crowd in, have them singing along, and enjoying the party.

Little Big Town

In 2015 LBT had to pull out of the Boots & Hearts lineup… and we’re still waiting for them to come back and give us a show that we’ll be talking about long after they leave the stage.

We’ve seen them before and we can’t wait to see them again. Hopefully up on the main stage in front of 40,000 people.

Maren Morris

maren-morris-hero-albumMorris is on top of the world with the recognition that’s coming from singles like 80’s Mercedes and My Church. And if you haven’t heard the rest of Hero, you’re doing yourself a disservice.

We haven’t seen Morris live, but I have a feeling that a few thousand of our best friends singing along to My Church could be a highlight of the weekend.

Kelsea Ballerini

Love Me Like You Mean It, Dibs, and Peter Pan have been a strong start to Ballerini’s career. And after her performance at the 2016 Canadian Country Music Awards (where Boots & Hearts won for Country Festival, Fair or Exhibition of the Year) we know that a Canuck crowd can get behind she when she sings.

With another single sure to come soon, there’s no doubting Kelsi’s talent or popularity, or that she belongs at B&H 2017.

James Barker Band

James Barker Band SiriusXM Fan Stage BH5 Boots and Hearts 2016After winning the Emerging Artist Showcase in 2015 and performing on the main stage in 2016 the James Barker Band has certainly earned the love of the B&H crowd. And with the success of Lawn Chair Lazy and the release of Just Sayin’ – plus an EP coming in the (we hope) near future, we know that country fans are ready to cheer and sing and dance with James, Taylor, Bobby and Connor again at Boots & Hearts 2017!

Chris Stapleton

I know from talking to executive members of the Republic Live team that Chris Stapleton is just as adored internally as he is by the rest of the world. And after the success of Traveller, it’s impossible to think that the Boots & Hearts crowd wouldn’t go wild for the country crooner.

Stapleton played the main stage in 2014 – and he’d be welcome to do it again in 2017 we’re sure!

Brett Kissel

Brett Kissel CNE 2015Also a 2014 B&H alum, Kissel played the Coors Banquet Kick Off Party on the front porch stage… but he’s never been on the main stage.

In 2017, after winning the Fans’ Choice, Male Artist, and Interactive Artist of the Year awards at the CCMA’s this year, we know that thousands (tens of thousands) of Canadian country fans would be okay with the chance to sing along to Started With A Song, Airwaves, Come Pick Me Up, and 3, 2, 1. Bring it on Brett!

Runaway Angel

The first time we saw Runaway Angel they were on the Boots & Hearts stage in the Emerging Artist Showcase. And now, after having seen them grow and become more and more entertaining – we’re ready to see them back on the B&H stage.

Take a listen to No End In Sight (the debut album from Runaway Angel), close your eyes and imagine the songs coming from the stage.

Jessica Mitchell

Jessica Mitchell BH5 Boots and Hearts 2016-Jessica Mitchell stole a lot of hearts in the last year… mine included. Workin’ On Whiskey is the kind of song that gets stuck in your soul. And songs like That Record Saved My Life and Grown Up Things prove that she’s not just a one trick pony.

After opening for Kiefer Sutherland on his 2016 tour, playing a short set of her own on the Sirius XM stage at #BH5, and taking the stage as a special guest with Lindsay Ell, we know that Jessica is ready for an full sized audience of her own at Boots & Hearts in 2017.

BONUS: Keith Urban

keith-urban-ripcord-albumIf you’ve ever seen Urban live, you know he’s killer with a big crowd. And if you haven’t seen Keith Urban live, he should be on your bucket list!

Coming into the sixth year of the festival, it makes sense to try and lock up this guitar wizard for a headlining slot. If you’ve been at any other Boots & Hearts festival over the years you can expect the exact same kind of pandemonium for this set. Plus, there’s Ripcord (March 2016) to sing along to!

Also on my list, but just outside the top 10…

Darius Rucker, Lady Antebellum, Dallas Smith, Shae Dupuy, Terri Clark, Endless Summer, and Johnson Crook.

Who do you think we’ll see at Boots & Hearts 2017? Leave a comment telling us and we might just have some swag to send our favourite answers!

Boots & Hearts 2016 Preview: Jake Owen Top 5

If you asked us if we’re excited about Jake Owen coming to Boots & Hearts 2016 it would be nearly impossible for us to say no. And if we did, we’d be lying.

Jake has been on our list of dudes we love in country for a while. From Yee Haw in 2006 to American Country Love Song in 2016, it’s been a good decade for barefoot Jake… from long hair to short, blue jeans to board shorts, this lovin’, beachin’, good timin’ Florida boy has more to give as he crosses the 35 years old mark, and we’ll be here to listen.

Now, to get us all ready for Jake Owen’s headlining performance on Thursday, August 4th at Boots & Hearts 2016, we’ve got our 5 favourite tracks from his library + a bonus track featuring Jake and 6 of his most talented friends.

Have a look and leave a comment telling us what Jake Owen favourites we left off the list that you wish were here… and stay tuned because more great Boots & Hearts coverage is coming – and we might even have another contest or 2 up our sleeves 😉

Jake Owen Top 5!

What’s not to love about this song?! Number 1 on the charts, and in our hearts, Jake Owen can take us beachin’ any time… including the Coors Banquet Kick Off Party at Boots & Hearts 2016!

Barefoot Blue Jean Night

Another one of our favourites, this song is just a lot of fun. Good old fashioned fun. And that’s good enough for us. Plus, it also went #1, so you know that we aren’t the only ones who love it. Get ready to sing along!

Note: We do not recommend being barefoot too much at Boots & Hearts… better safe than sorry!

Anywhere With You

This is a sweet song, the kind that makes you want to have someone to follow anywhere… West Virginia, baby I don’t care.

Also, it’s proof that Jake Owen doesn’t need to sing a beach themed party song to make us happy.

Don’t Think I Can’t Love You

Another romantic reminder from Jake that he’s not just a barefoot beach bum… Don’t Think I Can’t Love You is a favourite – and we’re not ashamed to say it. We love love songs. And while this isn’t a traditional ballad, it works, and it’s relatable, and that might be the most Jake-like thing about it… it’s real.

Real Life

It’s short hair Jake!

The lead single from the upcoming (still untitled as far as we know) album has a decidedly Jake Owen feel to it, and that’s probably why we like it so much. There’s also a little Sam Hunt talky/singy action, which doesn’t bother us one bit, because he pulls it off just fine.

If the rest of the record is as good as this (and American Country Love Song) we should all be satisfied.

BONUS: Life In A Northern Town w/ Sugarland and Little Big Town

There’s not much more to say about this than we LOVE it. The harmonies put together by these 7 ridiculously talented people are something like heaven. There’s a reason we love choir music… and this is pretty darn close to that.

Untamed: Welcome to Cam Country!

I’m not ready to put together my “Ones to Watch in 2016” list just yet, but I promise you this, near the very top of that list (when it comes) will be Cam.

Cam - Photo credit Ninelle EfremovaWith more than 25,000,000 plays on Spotify, appearances at SXSW, Apple Music Fest in London, and the Grand Ole Opry, Cam certainly isn’t unknown any more. But she is just starting what could be a very successful country music career.

Cam Welcome to Cam Country EP CoverThe blond singer has made quite an impact with fans and the country music community with her debut EP (Welcome to Cam Country) and live appearances. Influencing countless covers with her talent and bubbly personality. Her hair, smile, laugh, voice, talent combo reminds me of both Kimberly Schlapman (Little Big Town) and Kellie Pickler… and maybe even a little Dolly Parton thrown in.

Burning House is Cam’s most popular track to date, with over 15,000,000 Spotify spins (to date), it’s a lyrically heavy track that features a strong vocal and will break your heart if you stop and listen and let it. And I love it.

Note: I’m a sucker for a ballad. And this one is so true from Cam’s heart that it jumps out of the speakers and makes you wish you could right the wrongs of your past.

But wait… there’s more!

Cam Untamed Album CoverThe announcement has been made that Cam’s debut full length album, Untamed, will be released on Friday, December 11, 2015. It’s great news for fans who love Burning House, My Mistake, Half Broke Heart, and Runaway Train.

Untamed will feature 11 tracks, including Burning House, My Mistake, and the title track. And if she stays true to form, we’re going to have catchy tracks that will be stuck in your head… and if we’re lucky, another slowed down something that will give us more of what we love in Burning House.

Already a Gold certified artist, Cam is on her way to the top. The key now is momentum, and with her new album on the way while her current tracks are still fresh in our minds and on our playlists, she’s going to have that covered.

I’ve got a big crush on Cam. She’s started strong and has a lot of potential to go places. It’s going to be a fun ride!

Sun Drunk: The Reklaws at Boots & Hearts 2015!

For the third year in a row, Stuart and Jenna Walker were up on the Boots & Hearts stage doing their thing in front of the crowd. But this year was different.

The Reklaws Boots and Hearts 2015In 2013 The Reklaws won the Emerging Artist Showcase and in 2014 they returned to play for the crowd… but in 2015 they really showed us what they had, and did it in front of the biggest B&H audience they’d ever had.

The Republic Live team announced that there were 32,000 in the park on Thursday night, and many of those fans made their way to the Front Porch stage for the start of, and during, the set that started the Coors Banquet Kick Off Party – we talked to Jenna and Stuart later in the weekend and they told us that they would have played to 6 people if that’s who was out there, but it was pretty cool to play to significantly more than that.

The brother and sister duo also told us that they knew their job was to get people pumped up for the acts that were headlining the night – and they didn’t disappoint. Opening with their current single Sun Drunk was a surprising decision, but one that worked in showing who in the crowd has been listening to country radio and has heard the band’s newest offering.

The Reklaws Boots and Hearts 2015Capitalizing on the crowd’s natural energy was key for the young singers, and as their set continued with a string of higher tempo numbers, they did just that. Covers in the set included Boondocks (Little Big Town), 4 5 Seconds (Rihanna, Kanye West, Paul McCartney), and The South (The Cadillac Three), and they all earned cheers and prompted loud singing from the accumulated mass of country music lovers.

Note: The duo closed their set with an original song dedicated to the festival and aptly called Boots and Hearts. It was a nice touch, got the fans into the action and finished their time on a nice high.

The Reklaws Boots and Hearts 2015While we were sitting down Friday we also asked about new music and an album and when we can expect that to happen… The Reklaws told us that they have lots of music written and ready, but they don’t want to rush things. They’re actively looking for the right team to put their record together and when that comes together we’ll get a better answer.

Jenna and Stuart also took care of hosting duties Friday on the Main Stage and Sunday during the Emerging Artist Showcase on the Front Porch Stage showing us that they are becoming more and more comfortable not only putting on their show, but entertaining crowds however they need to, whenever they get the opportunity.

When we asked them if they’d be back if they were asked they were 100% into the idea… maybe we’ll be seeing them again in 2016.

Check out the set list, more pics and stay tuned for more coming soon…

Who’s Coming Next Year? 10 Boots & Hearts 2016 Predictions!

It’s been less than a week since we drove away from Burl’s Creek with music playing in our heads and memories of an awesome 4 day weekend still being formed… but we’re already thinking ahead to Boots & Hearts 2016!

We’ve seen the Google searches for Boots & Hearts predictions and have even been asked on Twitter who we think will be on stage next summer, so we’ve done a little thinking, tried to stay as objective as possible, and picked 10 country music acts that we think have a very real and serious chance to be entertaining us August 4 to August 7, 2016.

Note: We haven’t read any other prediction posts so far so that we could make our own picks without being influenced by anyone else.

Here we go…

Little Big Town

Little Big TownWe all know that Little Big Town was scheduled to appear at Boots & Hearts 2015, but with Jimi recovering from vocal surgery, the quartet had to pull out of the gig… and we really did miss having them there.

It wouldn’t surprise us at all to see LBT added to the next year’s lineup… and early. They could even be the 1st headliner announced if Republic Live believes that they can fill that slot in 2016.

Darius Rucker

Darius Rucker Boots and Hearts 2015When Little Big Town announced their canceled dates in 2015 a lot of Boots & Hearts fans were calling for Rucker to fill the spot.

A member of the Grand Ole Opry, a hit maker in country music, and a dude that can bust out 90s favourites from his time with Hootie and the Blowfish, this would be an add that makes a lot of sense and would make a lot of people happy.

Brett Kissel

Brett Kissel on Stage at Boots and Hearts 2014After playing the Coors Banquet Kick Off Party in 2014, Brett Kissel could be poised to take the main stage at Boots & Hearts 2016.

We know that Brett puts on a great show, gets the crowd fired up, and has the songs it takes to fill an hour plus on stage. Don’t be surprised if we see Flat Lake, Alberta’s most famous son in Oro-Medonte next summer.

Brett Eldredge

Brett EldredgeEldredge is a rising star in country music. With some bonafide hits already to his name, we know that fans would be able to sing along to the set.

It should also be noted that Brett will be going on tour with 2015 performer Thomas Rhett, and if they talk about the idea and Republic Live makes the ask we have to think that young Mr. Rhett would have nice things to say about his time here.

Jess Moskaluke

Jess Moskaluke Boots and Hearts 2015We know that Jess has played Boots & Hearts in both 2014 and 2015, but she hasn’t yet had a turn on the main stage.

Nominated for 3 CCMA’s in September (Female Artist of the Year, Single of the Year “Cheap Wine and Cigarettes”, Album of the Year “Light Up the Night”) and with a new EP, Kiss Me Quiet, being released later that month, it might finally be time for Jess Moskaluke to come back and take her turn on the big stage in 2016.

Jake Owen

Jake OwenThis guy is pretty much the embodiment of summer, so as August rolls around and Boots & Hearts hits in 2016, it makes sense to see Jake Owen up on stage.

Whether he keeps his hair short or grows it back out, the ladies will still love him, and the crowd will be ready to sing along to his 13 Top 10 hits (and maybe more by then). Be ready for a barefoot blue jean night.

Kacey Musgraves

Kacey MusgravesMusgraves is a fan favourite, a Top 40 staple, and should still be touring 2015’s Pagaent Material when next summer rolls around.

We think Musgraves would be a great addition to either the Front Porch or the Main Stage, and don’t think it would be a stretch to have her come up to play Boots & Hearts.

Meghan Patrick

Meghan Patrick at Liuna Station Gibson at the Junos 2015Meghan wouldn’t be new to the Boots & Hearts stage, we saw her with The Stone Sparrows in 2013 – but now the singer/songwriter is on her own, having signed a new record deal with Warner Music Canada earlier this summer.

We know Meghan has been writing and working hard over the last few months, and it wouldn’t surprise us to see her on the Boots & Hearts Front Porch stage in 2016.

Johnson Crook

Johnson-Crook-outside-1111Contestants in the 2015 Emerging Artist Showcase, Johnson Crook finished just outside the top 2 spots that made it to the main stage… but we’ve heard that they were very well received by the judges panel, and being based out of Toronto doesn’t hurt their chances of being asked back.

Eric Ethridge

Eric EthridgeEthridge did a great job in the Emerging Artist Showcase, finishing 2nd to the James Barker Band – but with a polished sound, tight band, and great look, we expect that they will continue to push on with their young career in country music by putting on a show at Boots & Hearts 2016.

What do you think of our picks? Are we way off, do they make sense?

And who do you think we’ll see next year at Boots & Hearts 2016?

Canadian Takeover: Dallas Smith and Chad Brownlee at Boots & Hearts 2015!

Chad Brownlee Boots and Hearts -2542Saturday at Boots & Hearts we got a double shot of Canadian country music talent when Chad Brownlee and Dallas Smith took over the main stage back-to-back.

First up was Chad Brownlee, who we just saw at the Blue Jays pre-game – and who we are happy we saw again. This guy puts on a great show, and the fans knew it. There was a nice cheer to start off the show when the band took the stage, and the evening crowd kept filing in throughout the set to make it a pretty great group of people singing and dancing.

Chad Brownlee Boots and Hearts -2576With a selection of country radio hits to choose from, a 2015 nationwide tour under his belt, and a voice that was made to sing, this former Vancouver Canucks draft pick made people happy.

Chad is also incredibly handsome, which we saw people saying both in the crowd and on the side of the stage. It’s not news to anyone who has seen his face before, but it’s worth mentioning – just look at the pics.

But our favourite thing, and we’re pretty sure Chad loved it too, was looking over the crowd and seeing how many people knew the words and were singing along.

Dallas Smith Boots and Hearts -2747After a short turn over break, Dallas Smith came out to a great crowd reaction, which I’m sure felt good for a guy who wasn’t originally booked for that slot. In a great move, Dallas slid over from Sunday to fill in for Little Big Town, and it was the perfect decision. From the first song the Boots & Hearts crowd was jacked up and ready to party. And the rock and roll country sound was a great lead-in to headliner Eric Church.

Dallas isn’t new to the performing thing, he did with Default and now he does it country – and he’s not new to Boots & Hearts, we saw him in 2012 and 2014, and this was bigger and better and showed that this is a guy who just keeps putting in the work and keeps making new fans.

Dallas Smith Boots and Hearts -2682The 19 song set gave us a little bit of everything with a cover of Pontoon as a Get Well Soon tribute to LBT’s Jimi Westbrook, some Imagine Dragons’ Radioactive, a brand new song Kids With Cars, and all of the hits we were ready for and sing along to on the radio all the time.

Somewhere north of 25,000 people loved every minute of Dallas Smith’s set. And that includes us.

Boots and Hearts 2015 Artist Preview: Emerson Drive

What? Yes, in case you hadn’t heard Emerson Drive has been added to replace the unfortunate loss of Little Big Town. I’m disappointed we won’t be seeing Little Big Town this time around but we understand that Jimi’s health comes first. And I’m excited to see Emerson Drive back at Boots and Hearts and thrilled that they’ll be hitting the main stage on Sunday at 5:15 just before Thomas Rhett. It’s a great spot!

Note – to accommodate this change, Dallas Smith has been moved to Saturday at 7:00pm just before Eric Church another fantastic spot.

Previous headliner for the opening night party my first year, in 2013, they’re the very first
country band I saw live and it was the first step towards my love of country music!

Emerson Drive

They’ve been touring since July 4th to support a brand new EP, Tilt a Whirl, and they’ve got a brand new summer single, Till the Summer’s Gone. It’s pretty catchy and checks off all the boxes for a great summer hit. It makes us think of sun and sand, it makes us want to dance, it makes us think of long summer days and nights, for those of us not fresh out of college, it makes us think of our younger days.

They’ve won major awards here in Canada and in the US, which is not an easy thing to do. With over 30 nominations they’ve had 10 wins including Billboard Magazine’s Top New Artist, Canadian Country Music Awards Group of the Year, and Academy of Country Music’s TopNew Vocal Group. Releasing albums for 10 plus years, Emerson Drive are seasoned professionals and you can expect a fantastic show. I can hardly wait!

Who Will Replace Little Big Town at Boots & Hearts 2015

Update: We have an answer…

The Boots & Hearts schedule now shows Dallas Smith moving out of his original time slot on Sunday and into the empty slot on Saturday opening for Eric Church. Emerson Drive will now be joining the B&H lineup, taking over in Smith’s Sunday spot.

Got it? Good!

Sadly, Little Big Town has announced that they will be cancelling all of their shows for the first 3 weeks of August as Jimmy recovers from his vocal condition by doctors orders.

That means that as of right now (or whenever the announcement is made public by Boots and Hearts) there is an empty time slot of 7:00pm to 8:30pm on Saturday night. And that means we need to figure out who could replace the Girl Crush singers on the main stage before Eric Church headlines the night.

We’ve brainstormed a few options… let us know what you think.

Little Big Town Replacement Option 1: Chad Brownlee

When-The-Lights-Go-Down-Toronto-Chad-8368Chad Brownlee is currently scheduled to play before the Little Big Town slot. So why not just bump the Canadian country star up to 7pm?

It would mean adding a half hour to the 1 hour set that Brownlee has been planning, but we’re confident that he can take tracks from his 3 albums + maybe a cover of Thinking Out Loud to fill that time and keep the fans happy. We just saw him in the spring on the When The Light Go Down tour, and he was excellent!

But, if we move Chad Brownlee up to 7pm, we have to replace him from 5:30pm to 6:30pm… why not Tebey? There are no shows currently showing on his website and we know he puts on a great show. So we say get him in there and let him show the Boots & Hearts crowd why he won the 2012 Emerging Artist Showcase.

Little Big Town Replacement Option 2: Another BIG Name

If you’re itching for another big name to fill the LBT slot and leave Chad Brownlee where he is, we’ve got some options that we think could work based on availability, and awesomeness…

Darius Rucker Boots and Hearts 2015Darius Rucker: We’ve seen Rucker’s name online already as a replacement that people want to see. And we’d agree. The former Hootie and the Blowfish lead singer is on our list of artists we need to see. He’s a member of the Opry and if the Republic Live team can get him – we’ll be happy!

Kacey Musgraves: One of the hottest names in the genre right now, Musgraves is cool, talented, and pushing her Pageant Material album. We can only imagine the volume of the crowd singing along to Biscuits and Gravy, Merry Go ‘Round, and Follow Your Arrow as the evening fades and night begins.

Terri Clark Boots and Hearts 2015Terri Clark: Canadian country legend, member of the Grand Ole Opry, hit maker, crowd pleaser, all around awesome entertainer – why wouldn’t we want to see Terri Clark. With a HUGE career and a list of hits longer than your arm, Clark can own a Canadian crowd. We saw her years ago opening for Brad Paisley in Ottawa, and it was damn near a double headlining show with the pop that she got from the audience. We say yes, bring on live versions of Boy Meets Girl, The World Needs A Drink, Emotional Girl, Dirty Girl, No Fear, etc.

Brantley Girlbert Boots and HeartsBrantley Gilbert: The tattooed singer always looks like he’s having a good time, and more than anything that’s what we need to be looking for here. With the requisite hits (Country Must Be Country Wide, You Don’t Know Her Like I Do, Bottoms Up, One Hell Of An Amen) and a big attitude, he’d be a great fit leading into Eric Church!

Jennifer Nettles: We included Nettles in our 2015 predictions, but she didn’t make it to the schedule. But now she’s got Sugar to share with the world plus That Girl, Me Without You, Who Says You Can’t Go Home – and the entire Sugarland library. In fact, we’d love to see Sugarland play as a duo, but Kristian Bush has a show in Illinois on Friday night, so we’re not as hopeful about that.

Little Big Town Replacement Option 3: Eric Church

Eric Church 2015Right now Eric Church is scheduled to play from 9pm to 11pm… but what if he played longer? What if he took a page out of Neil Young’s WayHome playlist and put on a 3 hour show for the Boots & Hearts crowd?

3 hours is a long time, so we’re probably asking for too much there. But there is a way this could work. If Church comes on at 8:30pm and plays until 11pm we’ve got that covered – and if Chad Brownlee comes on from 6pm to 7:30 instead of 5:30pm to 6:30pm, we’re in better shape. A hour between sets isn’t awful, people could deal with it.

The only thing we don’t like about that plan is that it doesn’t replace Little Big Town…

Now we want to know, who do you want to see replace Little Big Town at Boots and Hearts 2015? Tell us in a comment – we’ll see you there!
