The New Music Spotlight is here with five new songs, including two collaborations that we can’t wait for you to hear.

Ready? Let’s go!

Artist: Chad Brownlee
Hometown: Kelowna, BC
Genre: Country
Related: Dallas Smith, Tim Hick, Brett Kissel
Song: Dear Drunk Me
Notes: The anticipated new single from Chad Brownlee is here, and Dear Drunk Me is a winner. The BC boy has a hot track on his hands, and Canadian country fans should be ready for this one to be big on the radio and everything they hear country music.

Artist: Robyn
Hometown: Stockholm, Sweden
Genre: Pop
Related: La Roux, Little Boots, Scissor Sisters
Song: Missing U
Notes: Robyn does what she does best on Missing U – gets us moving. In our chairs, on the dance floor, everywhere we are, we’ll be dancing when the new single from the Swedish dance-pop icon comes on.

Artist: Danielle Bradbery / Thomas Rhett
Hometown: Cypres, TX / Valdosta, GA
Genre: Country
Related: Kelsea Ballerini, Lauren Alaina, Brett Eldredge, Jason Aldean
Song: Goodbye Summer
Notes: Danielle Bradbery and Thomas Rhett have been working together behind the scenes for years, and now Goodbye Summer brings them together on the same song. The pair make a great team, continuing Bradbery’s re-emergence onto the country scene and giving Rhett another top track to add to his resume.

Thomas Rhett Links: Web / Facebook / Twitter / Instagram / Spotify / Apple

Artist: Hunter Hayes
Hometown: Breaux Bridge, LA
Genre: Country-Pop
Related: David Nail, Thompson Square, Jana Kramer
Song: Dear God
Notes: Hunter Hayes walks on the pop side of his country-pop billing with Dear God – and it works. The same country boy voice that we’ve always known from Hayes comes through on the poppy production. But what keeps it country is the lyrical content, going to God like a country song is apt to do, and a pop song may not be.

Artist: CHVRCHΞS / Wednesday Campanella
Hometown: Glasgow, Scotland / Shibuya, Tokyo
Genre: Pop / J-Pop
Related: MS MR, HAIM, Broods
Song: Out Of My Head
Notes: Surprise! CHVRCHΞS & Wednesday Campanella dropped a new summer jam on Friday morning and it’s a mover and shaker. The multi-lingual collaboration on Out Of My Head proves that a great groove will carry a song for any audience!

The Darcys + Leah Fay at 102.1 The Edge: Sugar Beach Session

Watching The Darcys + Leah Fay at 102.1 The Edge’s Sugar Beach Session was the perfect end to my day. Nothing beats a little live music to take you away. Add a sweet lake breeze, and you’re all set.

The Darcys + Leah Fay at The Edge Sugar Beach Session

In case you haven’t heard The Darcys, and Leah Fay have a brand new single out. Just Here With My Friends was released on June 22nd. It’s an upbeat song that challenges you to sit still in your seat. The Darcys’ fans have been waiting two years for new music, and this fun collaboration with Leah Fay of July Talk was worth the wait.

The song breaks away from your typical boy meets girl narrative. Instead of meeting and dancing the night away together, the song’s characters opt to stay and dance with their friends. It’s a nice change from the typical predatory boy tries to convince girl story and gives credit to both sides of the interaction. I’m a fan.

The Darcys + Leah Fay at The Edge Sugar Beach Session

Starting the set sans Fay, Jason Couse and Wes Marskell got the crowd warmed up. Leah quickly joined the pair, and we were treated to a beautiful rendition of Don Henley’s The Boys of Summer. When they got to the part where the guitar does its sweet wail, Leah sang along with the wail, and it was amazing!

It was a scorching afternoon. In the middle of the set, Fay grabbed a basket full of bottled water.  She made her way to the front of the crowd. She passed out bottles to thirsty fans with a smile on her face. It’s important that everyone stays hydrated. It was sweet and very much appreciated.

The Darcys + Leah Fay at The Edge Sugar Beach Session

They finished out the set with Just Here With My Friends. It was no surprise to me to see people singing along. The song is all over radio and climbing, currently sitting at #14 on The Edge Top 30. If you missed the Sugar Beach Session, you can still catch The Darcys (and we’re pretty sure Leah Fay) at The Bentway on August 25th. The Darcys will be hitting the stage at this unique new space along with Brave Shores, MONOWHALES, and Myles Castello. Watch this link for ticket details!

New Music Spotlight with Metric, Livy Jeanne and More

New Music from Metric, Livy Jeanne, Halestorm, Kadooh, and Tenille Arts

It’s time for another edition of the New Music Spotlight, this week with selections from the worlds of pop, rock, and country. We’ve got six new songs to share with you, so get ready to hit play, dance in your chair, and discover a new favourite for your playlists.

Leave a comment when you’re done listening to tell us which of these new songs you’ll be playing on repeat!

Ready? Let’s go!

Artist: Metric
Hometown: Toronto, ON
Genre: Rock / Pop
Related: Stars, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Tegan and Sara
Song: Dressed To Suppress
Notes: Dressed To Suppress is Metric giving us exactly what we wanted to hear when we hit play. The new single a rock/pop mix that features another strong delivery from Emily Haines. There’s a new album coming this fall from the Toronto band, and we can safely say that we’re excited for it.

Links: Web / Facebook / Twitter / Instagram / Spotify / Apple

Artist: Livy Jeanne
Hometown: Edmonton, AB // Nashville, TN
Genre: Pop / Country
Related: The Lovelocks, MacKenzie Porter, Amy Metcalfe
Song: Easy On You
Song: Wrong For You
Notes: Livy Jeanne is back with new music for the first time in… a while, and we like it. With two songs, Easy On You and Wrong For You, the Edmonton-to-Nashville singer/songwriter shows more of her pop side, with her country roots hidden just under the surface.

Links: Web / Facebook / Twitter / Instagram / Spotify / Apple

Artist: Halestorm
Hometown: Red Lion, PA
Genre: Rock
Related: Shinedown, Theory Of A Deadman, Sick Puppies
Song: Buzz
Notes: Step 1) Turn up the volume. Step 2) Let the rock and roll wash over you. Halestorm’s Buzz is another in a long line of bangers that make us want to move and shout and push into a crowd at the front of the stage at a loud rock show. The new album from Halestorm, Vicious, is available now, and you best believe we’ll be listening!

Links: Web / Facebook / Twitter / Instagram / Spotify / Apple

Artist: Kadooh
Hometown: Vancouver, BC via Hanna, AB
Genre: Country
Related: Andrew Hyatt, Shawn Austin, Brad Saunders
Song: 24 Reasons
Notes: The debut country single from Kadooh is a smooth, easy ride – perfectly fit for summer… and dealing with a breakup. 24 Reasons is a strong hello to Canadian country music from music industry vet (State Of Shock) and we’ll have this one on playlists while we wait to hear what comes next.

Links: Web / Facebook / Twitter / Instagram / Spotify / Apple

Artist: Tenille Arts
Hometown: Weyburn, SK
Genre: Country
Related: Madeline Merlo, Alee, Kalie Shorr
Song: I Hate This
Notes: Set to become Tenille Arts’ first single to US country radio, I Hate This is a sweet song that shows off her country voice and legitimate sound. If this is the start of new music from Arts in a follow up to 2017’s Rebel Child, we’re here for it!

Jocelyn Alice at the 2018 Calgary Stampede

Jocelyn Alice took over the Coca-Cola Stage at the 2018 Calgary Stampede to open for Walk Off The Earth, and did a stellar job showing off her indie-soul-pop style.

Related: Walk Off The Earth at the 2018 Calgary Stampede

The hometown, certified platinum (2015’s Jackpot), emerging star was the perfect lead-in for the night’s headliners. Jocelyn Alice brought a big smile, great energy, and a ton of talent to the stage, and the Calgary Stampede fans in attendance were there to soak it all in. And they were happy to do so.

Jocelyn Alice has plans to release her debut EP in 2018, and we’ll be ready for the new music that comes with it. And, based on her chart success with songs like I Know and Bound To You and the Gold certification of Feels Right, we know that there will be a lot of excitement from fans and the Canadian music industry too.

Be ready for a lot more from Jocelyn Alice, and catch her on a stage near you as soon as you have the chance!

Lights Illuminates at the 2018 Calgary Stampede

Lights is no stranger to the Calgary Stampede, or should we say, this isn’t her first rodeo. The 2018 Juno award winner made a second stop in Calgary, and her fans were waiting.

It had only been four months since she’d come through town with her We Were Here Tour in March, and fans started lining up to save their spots during sound check.

The We Were Here singer dominated the Coca-Cola Stage, and her fans ate it up. She danced, she sang, she chatted with the crowd, and everyone got what they came for.

Lights is a super busy performer, and in addition to her musical career, she’s also out on the road promoting her graphic novel and comic book series. She’s mingled the two artistic ventures, and there are points in the books which pull in the music. It’s a cool, and interesting use of both of her worlds. If you haven’t seen Lights live yet, you should!

Virginia to Vegas at the 2018 Calgary Stampede

Virginia to Vegas… to Calgary. The Toronto-based indie/pop star came to the Coca-Cola Stage at the 2018 Calgary Stampede to open for Lights on a Friday night… and nailed it!

The Emotions singer took the stage and put on an entertaining and energetic show. In the photos here you can see that his jacket came off, he was jumping on the stage and putting all kinds of purpose and effort into opening the show.

With a growing reputation as a fantastic performer on stage, and a growing fanbase across Canada waiting for more new music – Virginia to Vegas continues to make a name for himself on the Canadian landscape.

The Calgary crowd may have come out to the Stampede and Coca-Cola Stage on Friday the 13th to see Lights headline the show. But we know that their attention was grabbed early, and we’d be willing to bet that the next time the Ontario singer/songwriter comes to Calgary, they’ll be back to see him again!

Walk Off The Earth at the 2018 Calgary Stampede

Walk Off The Earth hit the Coca-Cola Stage on Thursday night at the 2018 Calgary Stampede – and they put on a show!

The energetic and talented band from Burlington, ON are well known as top-flight entertainers, and they showed exactly why in front of the enthusiastic Calgary crowd.

While the band may be best known for their unique covers of hit songs on YouTube, they have hits of their own in Red Hands, Fire In My Soul, and NOMAD. Their live show has always been a mix of covers and originals, keeping the audience singing and dancing along while they do their thing up on the stage.

From start to finish, Walk Off The Earth gave the Calgary Stampede crowd a show that they won’t soon forget. And we’re willing to bet some of the people from the Thursday night audience will be in the front row the next time WOTE plays in Calgary!

Quote from the pit…

Absolutely incredible show last night!

Sheryl Crow at the 2018 Calgary Stampede

Sheryl Crow is a hit-maker, a future hall-of-famer, and an influence to many artists over the last 25 years. And on Wednesday night, the nine-time Grammy Award winner took over the Coca-Cola Stage at the 2018 Calgary Stampede!

You can see in the photos that the crowd was packed in at the stage to see the If It Makes You Happy singer perform with her band. Hands were in the air clapping along, and the voices in the Calgary crowd kept their enthusiasm up from start to finish.

With an 18-song set, many fans in the crowd got to hear their favourite Sheryl Crow cuts (scroll down to see the full setlist) including All I Wanna Do, Soak Up The Sun and Steve McQueen.

Seeing Sheryl Crow live gives you a chance to enjoy everything about the performance in the moment. Her talent and charm and ability to do what she does pairs with the excellence and experience of the band to create a well-crafted, can’t miss show. It also gives you a chance to let nostalgia take over. If you’ve got memories of moments in your life that Sheryl Crow’s music triggers, you can feel them, right there in the crowd.

Check out the photos and setlist from Sheryl Crow’s show – and stay tuned because we’ve got a whole lot more coming between now and the wrap of the 2018 Calgary Stampede!

New Music Spotlight The Royal Foundry, Mike Plume Band and more

New Music from The Royal Foundry, Mike Plume Band, Billie Eilish, Tash Sultana, and Squid Cult

It’s been a little while since I’ve had a chance to put together a New Music Spotlight for you. This past week has brought some interesting stuff to my inbox and I’m happy to share it with you.

Please watch the videos, and if you find something you like, give them some love on their socials.

Let’s do this!

Artist: The Royal Foundry
Hometown: Edmonton, AB
Genre: Electro-Alt-Pop
Related: Attica Riots, Shred Kelly, Dear Rouge
Song: Lost in Your Head
Notes: The newish synthy sounds of The Royal Foundry come to life in this live video for Lost in Your Head. The band is fresh off their win for pop single of the year at the Edmonton Music Awards (All We Have) and they’ve just signed a new distribution deal with UMG who are owned by INgrooves Music Group, under a deal with the US-based indie label and publisher Luna Music Group. The Royal Foundry are headed out on tour across Canada in the fall but they’ve got some summer shows coming up too. You can check out tour dates here.

Artist: Mike Plume
Hometown: Moncton, NB
Genre: Country, Rock, Alt Folk
Related Artists: Corb Lund, Stompin’ Tom Connors, Blue Rodeo
Song: My Old Friend
Notes: Mike Plume has been making music for over 25 years. He’s shared the stage with some of the best-known names in Canadian music including Blue Rodeo, Corb Lund, Steve Earle, The Mavericks and more. Plume has released 12 studio albums and Born by the Radio‘s 9 tracks are rich with stories and Mike thinks he’s done something very right with this album. The video is straight-forward lyric video and it allows the song speak for itself.

Links: Web /Facebook / Twitter / Instagram / Spotify / Apple

Artist: Billie Eilish
Hometown: Los Angeles, CA
Genre: Electropop, alternative
Related Artists: Lorde, Allie X, Halsey
Song: Hostage
Notes: Filmed in Toronto, Billie Eilish’s latest video release is a powerful background for her haunting song Hostage. The video is the product of director Henry Scholfield (Dua Lipa: New Rules, Stromae: Tous Les Memes), and it’s a collaboration and brainchild between Mosaert aka Stromae and Luc Junior Tam, Scholfield and Billie Eilish. The beautiful contemporary dance piece, layered with Billie’s message is a powerful combination.

Links: Facebook / Twitter / Instagram / Spotify / Apple

Artist: Tash Sultana
Hometown: Melbourne, AUS
Genre: Alternative
Related Artists: Methyl Ethel, Holy Holy, Vera Blue
Song: Harvest Love
Notes: Harvest Love is a beautiful video from Tash Sultana’s debut album Flow State which is due out on August 31st on Mom + Pop Music. The video delivers a vulnerable side of Tash that we’re not used to seeing. Artful in it’s black and white delivery, it allows us to focus on Tash, her guitar, and the message. Listen for her falsetto, some vocal runs, and a little bit of growling.

Links: Web / Facebook /Twitter / Instagram / Spotify / Apple

Artist: Squid Cult
Hometown: Los Angeles, CA
Genre: Rock
Related Artists:
Song: Rattlesnake
Notes: Put together in a single day, the video for Rattlesnake is the result of original plans falling through.

“We had a big, elaborate vision for this video. And then everything fell through. We had exactly one day to put something together, so we rented a 1974 Volkswagen The Thing, asked our friends to star, and ran out to Joshua Tree. The resulting romp through human sacrifice, slime, and shaving cream was completely improvised in 20-degree weather. Along the way, we ran out of gas in the middle of the desert, lost a wallet, and probably all caught colds. But the resulting video is something we are all extremely proud of. Luckily, we the best team in the world!”

It’s fun, it’s interesting and I love the way it meshes with the music.

Elijah Woods x Jamie Fine at the 2018 Calgary Stampede

Elijah Woods x Jamie Fine are on fire, and on Friday night the Canadian duo brought that heat to the Coca-Cola Stage at the 2018 Calgary Stampede!

Their platinum single, Ain’t Easy, has put Elijah and Jamie in a bright spotlight, and the Ottawa twosome has shown over and over again that they are ready. They’ve played on stages all across Canada, showing off their talent and fun-loving attitudes and getting us excited to hear the music that will be coming from the pair next.

New Music Spotlight with Paul McCartney, Joey Landreth and More

New Music From Paul McCartney, Joey Landreth, The Darcys feat. Leah Fay, Halestorm, and Blackjack Billy

This edition of the New Music Spotlight has a legend leading off, and great music all the way through. We go from the UK to Canada and the US and from pop to roots to rock to country. Enjoy!

Ready? Let’s Go!

Artist: Paul McCartney
Hometown: Liverpool, UK
Genre: Rock/Pop
Related: The Beatles, John Lennon, Wings
Song: Come On To Me
Notes: Sir Paul McCartney has a brand new album coming (Egypt Station) and if the entire album is going to make us as happy as Come On To Me, we’ll be ecstatic. The track is more pop than rock, and the vocals and musicianship are both great. But more than anything, it’s a reminder that at 76 years old, McCartney is still amazing.

Links: Web / Facebook / Twitter / Instagram / Spotify / Apple

Bonus: Don’t miss Paul McCartney in the BEST carpool karaoke episode yet!

Artist: Joey Landreth
Hometown: Winnipeg, MB
Genre: Roots Rock
Related: The Bros. Landreth, Johnson Crook, JJ Shiplett
Song: Forgiveness
Notes: Forgiveness is the lead single from an upcoming album from Joey Landreth… and already we can hear the guitar work that we’ve always loved from the Winnipeg player. Don’t sleep on the songwriting that Landreth shows off here, there’s depth and strength and vulnerability in an equation that he knows well.

Links: Web / Facebook / Twitter / Instagram / Spotify / Apple

Artist: The Darcys feat. Leah Fay
Hometown: Toronto, ON
Genre: Pop
Related: July Talk, MONOWHALES, Said The Whale
Song: Just Here With My Friends
Notes: The Darcys recruited a pal for their new song, Just Here With My Friends, and it worked perfectly. July Talk’s Leah Fay is a great match with the boys, and together they’ve put together a fun track that makes us wanna get up and move with our friends. Nailed it.

Links: Web / Facebook / Twitter / Instagram / Spotify / Apple

Artist: Halestorm
Hometown: Red Lion, PA
Genre: Rock
Related: My Darkest Days, Sick Puppies, Adelitas Way
Song: Black Vultures
Notes: If you want the heavy, intense, in your face action that Halestorm brings, Black Vultures is here for you. Lzzy Hale is in fine form, delivering a strong performance to the song and making us feel every word of it. Add the driving instrumental behind her, and this is a “turn it up and scream along” song.

Links: Web / Facebook / Twitter / Instagram / Spotify / Apple

Artist: Blackjack Billy
Hometown: Nashville, TN
Genre: Country
Related: Tim Hicks, River Town Saints, Chris Janson
Song: Straight Line Sober
Notes: Blackjack Billy is back to do what they do with a good time party song. The boys let it all hang out on Straight Line Sober, putting their amped-up vibe on a song about a girl, and we like it. Here’s hoping they play it live at Boots & Hearts this summer!

Notes: In The Grass is the debut single from Ocean Potion (Yukon Blonde’s Jason Haberman and Zeus’ Mike O’Brien) and it’s a fuzzy, retro, hazy indie rock track that introduces music fans to the new duo. It’s also the first single from their album, coming later this year.
