Lay It On Me: Vance Joy at WayHome 2017

Two years after his first appearance at WayHome, Vance Joy returned – and this time he took over the main stage to the delight of thousands of fans in the Oro-Medonte field.

We saw James Keogh play his set in 2015 on the WayBright stage as music fans were first coming to know the Aussie sensation. Before the T.Swift tour, and just as Fire And The Flood was reaching fans, we fell for what he’s got. And this weekend at WayHome 2017, we fell for it all over again.

As soon as Vance Joy came on stage, the crowd popped. There were cheers and screams and all kinds of love. And when the music started and Mess Is Mine came through the speakers, the singing in the crowd started as well, and it rarely stopped for the next hour.

As the sun shone and more fans came to the stage, the set continued with the songs that Vance Joy fans have listened to, learned, and memorized over the last few years. There were hands in the air and dancing, and on stage, there was a million dollar smile to go along with that sweet sweet voice that makes Vance Joy a star.

Our favourite sing along moment came near the end of the set when Fire And The Flood rang through the rows with the energy and love that live music provides. It was a great moment and a great reminder of why we love concerts and festivals and singer/songwriters.

Joy is a star, there’s not arguing it or denying it. And he’s got the kind of talent that continues to translate to records and radio – which is why we expect to be seeing more of him in the future. And you should too.

WayHome 2017 Lineup Announcement!

We’ve been waiting, all of us, patiently (mostly) for this day – and now it’s here…

WayHome has released the lineup for the 2017 music and arts festival, and the time is now to get excited for July 28-30 at Burl’s Creek.

With the release of their photo clues last week, WayHome started a conversation full of guesses, predictions, rumours and more. But now the guessing is over, and the planning can start. If you’ve already got your tickets for the festival, you’re hoping that some of the names on the list aren’t performing on stages at the same time (there are always hard decisions), and if you don’t have your tickets yet – it’s time to grab them so you can see Imagine Dragons, Frank Ocean, and Flume headlining on the weekend.

The last two years at WayHome have been a lot of fun. We’ve seen some amazing performances. We’ve seen some awesome totems. And we’ve witnessed the awesomeness of people coming together to enjoy music and art. The people, you people, that come to the fields and stages and campgrounds make this whole thing pretty cool.

Check the list of 2017 WayHome performers so far, and leave a comment telling us who you’re most excited to see.

And stay tuned – because we’ll have previews, interviews, and maybe even some badass contests leading up to the end of July.

CityFolk Fest 2016: Vance Joy

I had the pleasure of photographing Vance Joy three years ago when he was just starting off, playing smaller more intimate shows. After seeing him for the first time I couldn’t wait to see him again. It’s amazing how many dedicated fans he has.  After standing in the pouring rain for hours, I didn’t see one miserable face. I’ve never seen a show where so many strangers came together sharing umbrellas, ponchos and singing his songs together. Vance Joy fans are simply amazing!! It may have been raining and cold, but it didn’t stop anyone from having an awesome night. Continue Reading

Fire and the Flood: Vance Joy at WayHome 2015

From the first WayHome artist lineup announcement, Vance Joy was sitting at the top of my list. There was something about him, something sweet and charming, authentic and compelling. Ok, at least I thought there was based on his videos. It never occurred to me that it wouldn’t translate in real life and I wasn’t disappointed.

Vance Joy WayHome Art and Music Festival

Vance took to the WayBright stage at 8:30 on Sunday nigh with a big smile on his face and like the rest of his band, it rarely left. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, I love a happy musician. Those genuine smiles that come from them appreciating us.

Vance Joy WayHome Art and Music Festival

The connection Vance had with the crowd was palpable. He played off the Dream Your Life Away album, threw in a cover, The Chain, by Fleetwood Mac and he treated us to a brand new song, Fire in the Flood. It’s fantastic and you should go check it out. But nothing compared to the final song. We’d all been waiting for it and he knew it. Vance brought out the ukulele for Riptide and when we sang along he appreciatively responded with a “You guys are fucking loud”, and we were.

Vance Joy WayHome Art and Music Festival

Vance Joy was , by far, one of my favourite performances of the weekend. There’s no question WayHome put together an amazing list of varied artists, mixing genres and mixing people in a way Ontario has never seen. Nicely played Republic Live, nicely played.

2015 WayHome Day-to-Day Schedule and Set Times

We are getting really close to WayHome at Burl’s Creek – and now it’s time to start the planning!

The WayHome Music & Arts Festival has released the day-to-day schedule with set times and stage assignments for all of the acts. Now the hard part – choosing who you’re going to see when there’s an overlap! It’s bound to happen at least once. It’s the way it is.

Have a look at Friday, Saturday, and Sunday’s schedules for the WayHome, WayBright, WayBold, and WayAway stages and let us know which stage you’re most excited for, and which conflict in the schedule you’re trying to figure out!

Note: There could be changes here and even new acts added in, nothing is really written in stone except for maybe the last 3 acts on the Main Stage each day. And as always, weather can be a factor.

5 Acts We’re Excited to See at WayHome Music & Arts Festival

WayHome Music & Arts Festival is just around the corner and I’m super excited to see headliners Neil Young + Promise of the Real, Sam Smith and Kendrick Lamar, but today I thought I’d talk about five non-headlining acts, that I’m really excited to see.

Yukon Blonde

Yukon BlondeOut of Kelowna, BC I’m happy to see lots of Canadian content on the festival line up. They’ve just released the new album, On Blonde on Dine Alone Records and it’s fantastic! At $7.99 on the iTunes store, you should go download the new Yukon Blonde album so you can sing along next month. I’m looking forward to hearing the new songs as well as some of my older favourites including Stairway, which I now can’t hear without thinking about The Blue Jays.

Yukon Blonde is on the schedule for Sunday.

The Sheepdogs

The Sheepdogs Rolling Stone CoverThis band, who calls Saskatoon home, is also on our list. I’ve been a fan since the first time I heard them on Fearless Fred‘s show on the 102.1 The Edge. I was thrilled when they got their picture on the cover of Rolling Stone Magazine.

Their sound is right up my alley and I can’t wait to see them live. They’ve already got three Junos under their belts and I’ve heard they put on a really great live show. I can hardly wait. They’re on tour until November so if  WayHome Music & Arts Festival isn’t in your neck of the woods, check out their tour schedule. They’re on the schedule for Saturday.

Vance Joy

Vance JoyI can’t get enough of Atlantic Records/Liberation recording artist Vance Joy. The singer/songwriter hailing from Australia is described as easy listening or acoustic. I’ve listened to Dream Your Life Away from beginning to end, over and over. It’s on my playlist and I love it. Vance is selling out shows across the U.S. and he’s getting rave reviews. I’m expecting an easygoing attitude, effortless melodies and jokes. Looking forward to it.

Vance Joy is on the schedule for Sunday.

Ascot Royals

Ascot RoyalsNext up The Ascot Royals, the band members are originally from Britain, Israel and Canada, they met at McMaster in Hamilton. I’ve never seen them live but I’m looking forward to seeing them up on the festival stage. They came to my attention while they were competing in the Molson Canadian Open Live competition. They’ve been busy since and I’m thrilled to see them included at WayHome. They list their influences as “everything under the sun”. That sounds perfect to me.

Ascot Royals are also on Sunday’s schedule.

Brandon Flowers

Brandon FlowersAs the frontman for The Killers, Brandon isn’t new to the festival stage. And as a fan of The Killers, I’m expecting a lot and based on the reviews of Brandon’s live shows, I won’t be disappointed. His solo album The Desired Effect gives us the Brandon we love but perhaps a slightly softer, warmer, friendlier version. I really like it and I can’t wait to see him perform songs from this album.

WayHome Music & Arts Festival Day-to-Day Lineup!

It’s Here!

With 52 days left until we descend upon Burl’s Creek Event Grounds to listen to music, take in the arts, and generally enjoy the hell out of the 1st Way Home Music & Arts Festival, we have a lineup.

Okay, so we’ve had the lineup for a while – but now we know who is playing which day – which means now all we need to wait for is time slots and stage assignments.

Previous experience may lead us to believe that the names at the top will be performing at the end of the night, and the names at the bottom in the small print will be performing on side stages in the early afternoon sunshine… but we don’t know for sure just yet.

Here’s what we do know…
